Schedule a consultation

Choose an attorney from our directory based on your state and legal issue and select an appointment time. We’ve already thoroughly vetted every attorney in our network.

Get the assistance you need

Receive a call from an attorney in your state who knows small business needs. The attorney will be ready to discuss your first legal issue and answer your questions.

Prepaid legal

What is a prepaid legal plan?

How is a prepaid legal plan different than a regular business lawyer.

Finding a traditional business attorney who is trustworthy, familiar with your area and industry, and can support your company’s specific legal needs can be difficult. Additionally, final costs can be unpredictable as business attorneys’ rates will vary for the types of legal services they provide and the number of hours spent.

With a prepaid legal plan, the heavy lifting is done for you—every business attorney on the plan is reviewed and evaluated to ensure trustworthiness, legal knowledge, and relevant experience. And because legal plans cost a flat rate that’s paid up front, pricing is more predictable.

6 ways our legal plans can help your business

During your company’s life cycle, there are numerous times where having reliable legal advice can help you make more informed business decisions. With a prepaid legal plan, you’ll always have convenient access to legal assistance from an experienced business lawyer for important events and all the times in between.

Business formation

When forming a new small business, an attorney can advise which entity type to choose, review your operating agreement and other documents, and answer any other setup questions you have.

Business growth

As your business gets bigger or expands to new markets, an attorney can advise you on adding investors, help you make key hiring decisions, or review a lease for a new physical location.

Day-to-day business

An experienced lawyer can assist with the regular course of business, such as how to navigate state laws or review a contract, non-disclosure agreement (NDA), or other legal documents.

Compliance issues

To keep your business in good standing and avoid penalties, an attorney can answer questions about any post-formation filings required by your state like operating agreements and annual reports.

Litigation risk

If your company is sued for any reason, a business attorney can guide you to understand what to do and the proper procedure for how to respond to a lawsuit.

Intellectual property

If your business needs to protect its name, logo, slogan, or other valuable creative work, a knowledgeable business lawyer can help you understand your trademark or copyright needs.

Jason, 27 years

"When considering the benefits of the LegalZoom legal plan, I actually answer as a business owner myself and as an attorney. The ability to easily access reliable guidance from a friendly and skilled professional is radically superior compared to a purely 'do-it-yourself' approach."

LegalZoom offers comprehensive and customizable legal services to assist people who want to create their own LLC. For those thinking about working with a professional LLC formation company like LegalZoom to start a business, we’ve included four of LegalZoom’s key pros and cons for you to review below.

  • Offers LLC formation packages all including a customizable website
  • Provides high-quality customer service
  • Staffed by a diverse network of legal experts with industry experience
  • Difficult-to-locate pricing for some of the extra services LegalZoom offers
  • Slow chat support on the website
  • Free package includes fewer business services in comparison to some competitors’ free packages

LegalZoom was founded in 2001 by a team of professionals committed to making legal services available and accessible to everyone. Over the past two decades, LegalZoom has grown and expanded its services.

LegalZoom has assisted entrepreneurs in starting more than two million businesses. As a result, LegalZoom customers leverage and benefit from its extensive industry experience and refined expertise.

For those looking to start a new business, LegalZoom provides a wide array of services – and not just for emerging LLCs. For instance, LegalZoom offers services to help you start a sole proprietorship, a limited partnership, a limited liability partnership, a C-corporation, an S-corporation and even a nonprofit.

But what if you’ve already started your small business? LegalZoom also offers additional legal services for existing companies that support their ongoing operation and growth. For example, LegalZoom offers registered agent services, assistance acquiring business licenses and permits, annual report services, trademark registrations and more. By partnering with LegalZoom, customers can rest assured that their business is and will continue to maintain compliance with both local and federal laws and regulations.

How LegalZoom Works

LegalZoom helps simplify the process of legally forming your own LLC by doing the bulk of the heavy lifting. LegalZoom will help identify which forms and documents you need to fill out, identify where to file your business documents and file everything for you. Depending on which LLC formation package you purchase from LegalZoom, the company will also provide further services to help you successfully set up and run your business.

LegalZoom’s user-friendly platform provides a straightforward business formation process that will save you time (and confusion). Even if you haven’t decided what organizational structure is best for your new business, LegalZoom can help you determine which option suits your needs and goals best by answering just 10 simple questions .

Alternatively, if you’ve already created your company, LegalZoom’s platform provides a comprehensive list of the legal services available to support existing businesses.

LegalZoom doesn’t require users to create an account to purchase any of its individual services or to order one of its LLC formation packages. However, customers will need to create an account eventually to access various information and their business documents later. Creating an account with your information before making any purchases will make subsequent orders easier to fill out.

After a customer has completed an order, LegalZoom will proceed to file the information with the appropriate legal body or bodies. Once the filing process is concluded, copies of the associated forms will be provided to the customer for their records via posted mail. Depending on the services provided and the nature of the associated documents, these copies will also be made available online.

If you’re ready to start your own company, LegalZoom is your one-stop shop for all your business and legal service needs. Not only does LegalZoom offer customers three tiers of customizable LLC formation packages, but it also offers a wide spread of legal services that empower business owners to get just the level of support they need.

From LLC formation services to day-to-day business operations, LegalZoom’s team of industry experts is ready to help both new and existing businesses. We’ve outlined some of  LegalZoom’s most popular services for you below.

Online Document Preparation

Starting your own LLC involves a lot of paperwork – both before filing your business with the Secretary of State and after. LegalZoom’s online document preparation services help simplify and streamline the process so you don’t have to struggle through nuanced language or worry about missing any crucial forms.

Customers of LegalZoom’s documentation services benefit from access to a repository of more than 150 attorney-drafted legal forms. Moreover, users can easily edit and customize legal documents to meet their business needs without leaving LegalZoom’s platform.

For instance, LegalZoom’s legal document library includes articles of organization forms for LLCs, operating agreements, EIN applications, DBA forms, employee non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), amendment of agreement forms, product supply agreements and more.

Business Formation

From start to finish, LegalZoom provides legal services and guidance that will help you start your new business. For example, you need to decide on a name for your new business before you can officially file your articles of organization. LegalZoom’s name check service enables customers to determine if their preferred name meets legal requirements or if an existing business has already claimed it.

Not only does LegalZoom provide business formation services for LLCs, but it also offers formation services for additional business structures. LegalZoom can help you form a sole proprietorship, a limited partnership, a limited liability partnership, a C-corporation and an S-corporation, and a nonprofit.

Operating Agreement

Since an operating agreement is an internal document private to the company, whether your business is legally required to establish an operating agreement depends on the state where your company is registered. However, even though operating agreements are not filed on a state or federal level, it’s always considered best practice to draw one up.

While LegalZoom’s upper-tiered LLC formation packages include an operating agreement, business owners can also purchase this customizable service a la carte. So whether you’re starting an LLC or a corporation, LegalZoom’s operating agreement services will help you set up parameters for how you run your business and also help you protect your assets.

Digital Welcome Packet

Customers partnering with LegalZoom to start a new business receive a special service feature particular to LegalZoom: a digital welcome packet.

Once your LLC is officially registered, the welcome packet includes a step-by-step checklist to help guide you through the subsequent stages of creating and running your business.

Articles of Organization

The articles of organization document is the very root of your new business’s existence. This form is typically filed with your Secretary of State and asks you to fill in key information about your company.

For example, articles of organization forms often require you to specify your business’s name and mailing address, as well as identify a registered agent and their contact information.

LegalZoom will help you with the necessary documentation and ensure you correctly fill out the form. Once the articles of organization are complete, LegalZoom then takes care of correctly filing your paperwork with the appropriate Secretary of State.

Customizable Website

As necessary as it is, creating a website can be a time-consuming and daunting challenge. By partnering with Wix, LegalZoom makes setting up a business website simple and painless. Customers receive a fully functional website generated by Wix that users can easily customize and tailor to their business needs.

LegalZoom provides customers of all three LLC formation package tiers with a professional business website powered by Wix.

Document Storage

LegalZoom utilizes multiple layers of encryption to enforce the secure storage of sensitive information. Customers can rest assured that all the personal and business information provided to LegalZoom is securely stored in the cloud.

In light of LegalZoom’s extensive legal services, not all documents are accessible online. In this case, your documents will be mailed to you. However, the website indicates that LegalZoom’s team may expand this feature in the future.

Legal Document Templates

Customers who purchase access to LegalZoom’s repository of more than 150 legal forms and documents can save valuable time and energy adjusting them to fit their business needs.

LegalZoom simplifies the documentation process by asking various questions relevant to the specific business form at hand. LegalZoom then plugs in the user-provided information to generate the legal document for customers to download as a PDF and print.

LegalZoom’s platform also provides a text editor that enables users to go in, edit and customize their legal documents themselves, as needed.

Some popular document templates include mutual nondisclosure agreements, independent contractor agreements, sale of goods agreements and consulting service agreements.

Legal Advice

Unlike several LLC formation service competitors, LegalZoom offers its customers legal support and advice. For those who lack a strong grasp of the legal aspects of starting a new business, this service is a key benefit of partnering with LegalZoom.

LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package doesn’t include legal advice services, but the Pro and Premium offer different levels of legal support.

The Pro package provides customers with small business and insurance guidance services. This includes discussing asset coverage options and discussions on taxes, legal compliance and other topics to help set your business up for success.

The Premium package includes the above legal support services and a subscription to LegalZoom’s Business Attorney Plan. This plan provides customers with an unlimited number of 30-minute consultations with professional attorneys. The Business Attorney Plan also provides customers with a professional legal review of business forms and documents.

It’s important to note that LegalZoom’s Premium LLC formation package only includes a free 30-day subscription to its Business Attorney Plan. After the free trial, the subscription will renew automatically every month for a fee of $49.

Registered Agent Services

To officially file and register a new LLC, you must identify a registered agent for your business on the articles of organization form. Although many companies that provide LLC formation assistance include registered agent services in their packages, it’s important to note that LegalZoom does not.

Customers purchasing any of LegalZoom’s three LLC formation packages can add registered agent services to their orders for $199 annually.

For those who have already created their LLC, you can purchase their registered agent services a la carte. However, the price differs when only ordering LegalZoom’s registered agent services. Instead of $199, this will cost you $249 a year.

Basic Package

LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package is perfect for those who are interested in starting their own business and are confident in their abilities to handle most of the legwork themselves. Costing only the fees necessary to file your LLC with the state, LegalZoom’s Basic package helps customers complete their articles of organization, access their business name check service and create a customizable business website powered by Wix.

The Basic package also provides customers with a digital welcome packet and email and chat support. The digital welcome packet includes a checklist of what to do after officially filing your LLC with the Secretary of State.

The key advantage of LegalZoom’s Basic package is its low price. However, the Basic package only provides the bare minimum to help customers legally register their new LLC. Compared with other free business formation services, LegalZoom’s package isn’t as robust.

Since the Basic LLC formation package is so limited in the business services it provides, LegalZoom pushes a lot of its add-on features and services during the ordering process.

Pro Package

LegalZoom’s Pro package carries a fee of $249 plus state filing fees. This package includes everything from the Basic LLC formation package in addition to an operating agreement, a federal tax ID number (EIN) and a financial account authorization letter. The Pro package also provides small business and insurance guidance services, including a personalized consultation with a licensed insurance agent and a consultation with a small business specialist. Lastly, the Pro package includes one year of access to LegalZoom’s library of more than 150 customizable legal forms and documents, an unlimited number of eSignatures for one year and access to customer service and support via email, website chat and over the phone.

The main advantage of LegalZoom’s pro package is that it includes essential business documents necessary for legally operating a business. However, the change in price between LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package and its Pro formation package is notably substantial. Furthermore, like the Basic package, the Pro package doesn’t include registered agent services, a legal requirement for LLCs.

Premium Package

LegalZoom’s final tier of LLC formation packages is its Premium package, which costs customers $299 plus state filing fees. The Premium package includes all of the services provided in LegalZoom’s Basic and Pro packages, along with a handful of other features beneficial for those starting a new business that need more legal support and guidance.

Specifically, the Premium package enables customers to make an entity amendment within the first 30 days of purchasing this LLC formation package. Not only does LegalZoom take care of the amendment paperwork, but it will also expedite the filing process and subsequent delivery of customer document copies. However, customers may still be subject to state filing fees (if applicable).

The Premium package also supplies customers with a free 30-day trial subscription to LegalZoom’s Business Attorney Plan, which will automatically renew for a monthly fee of $49. This feature of LegalZoom’s Premium LLC formation package provides customers with unlimited access to 30-minute attorney consultation sessions concerning legal business topics. The Business Attorney Plan also enables customers to have all their legal documents and contracts reviewed by an experienced attorney from LegalZoom’s network in addition to monthly copyright registration services.

Lastly, customers can receive support by sending LegalZoom an email, using their website’s chat feature or by giving them a phone call.

Overall, LegalZoom’s Premium package offers the best value for its price. From a financial perspective, the jump in price from the Pro LLC formation package to LegalZoom’s Premium package is minimal compared to the extra features and services included. The Premium package is a solid choice for those who would feel more at ease knowing that they’ll have access to robust legal services and support throughout the whole LLC formation process.

However, even this upper-most tier of LegalZoom’s LLC formation packages lacks registered agent services.

Starting a new business is easy with LegalZoom’s help. No matter which formation package you choose, using LegalZoom to form a new LLC is a quick and relatively straightforward process that anyone can do.

Prepare Before You Start

From start to finish, LegalZoom provides contextual information and helpful suggestions as it guides you through each step of the business formation process. Of course, you can still take steps to make the filing process go even faster and more smoothly. For example, deciding on the name of your new business is a significant first step. Each state has its own rules and legal parameters regarding the naming of LLCs. As such, it’s wise to take the time to review the regulations of the state you’re going to register your business in before settling on a name for your new business.

For good measure, we also suggest coming up with a few backup ideas in case LegalZoom determines that your first choice is already taken. However, you can reduce the chances of this occurring:

  • At a federal level, you can look up your name ideas using the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS).
  • Find out if your name ideas have already been registered in your state. For example, if you’re creating an LLC in New York, you can look up your business name ideas on the Department of State’s Corporation and Business Entity Database .

Here are some additional components of your LLC checklist:

  • The state your business will be registered in and your business’s physical address
  • The purpose or nature of your LLC and associated industry
  • Registered agent information (if you wish to appoint a person or another entity other than LegalZoom)
  • The names of the other LLC members (if applicable)
  • The official start date of your LLC

Generally, a new business’s start date is when the articles of organization are filed with the Secretary of State. However, you may be able to specify a later date instead. Be sure to check your state’s associated rules and regulations.

To help you understand what to expect, we went through LegalZoom’s formation process. You can get a feel for the process and the different add-ons in our outline below.

  • Choose your LLC formation package.

To start the formation process, you’ll need to select a pricing package. For the purposes of our review, we choose LegalZoom’s free Basic package. However, we go over the different LLC formation packages in more detail later in this review.

  • Enter your business name.

In the first official step of forming your new LLC, LegalZoom asks for you to identify the name of your business. For those who haven’t quite settled on a name for their new company, LegalZoom allows users to skip this step and continue with the process.

  • Choose the state to register your LLC.

Next, you’ll be asked to identify the state where you want to register your new business.

  • Provide contact information.

You’ll then be asked to fill out some contact information, including your email address and phone number. While this step is optional, we suggest filling in your information so LegalZoom can quickly and easily contact you about your new LLC.

  • Identify your business’s industry type.

The following step will ask you to classify the industry that best describes your new business.

  • Click on the Next button.

This page identifies some documents and legal requirements necessary to form and operate your new LLC.

  • Select and identify your registered agent.

This step asks you to appoint the registered agent for your new company. While you can identify yourself as your LLC’s registered agent, LegalZoom tries to upsell its annual registered agent services on this page.

  • Add business documents to your order.

This next step is similar to the registered agent services offered on the previous page. However, in this step, LegalZoom allows users to add legally required documentation to their LLC formation package order.

However, LegalZoom promotes three different business documentation packages for customers. In other (and maybe a little confusing) words, this step provides the option to add a package to your package.

  • Add compliance services to your order.

The following step on the next page once again tries to upsell LegalZoom’s compliance services to customers forming a new LLC.

  • Add a business license report to your order.

In the next step, LegalZoom offers customers the option to add a service to their LLC formation package: a business license report. This report essentially tells you what permits and licenses are legally required to create and run your business. Between industry, state and federal regulations and requirements, determining what licenses your new business needs can be complex and confusing.

  • Add bookkeeping services to your order.

In the next step, customers can add bookkeeping services to their LLC formation package order.

Similar to the business documentation upsell options in Step 8, this step presents users with two of LegalZoom’s bookkeeping service plans.

  • Open a business bank account.

One of the final steps of the LLC formation process offers customers the opportunity to set up a new bank account just for their new business.

  • Enhance your order.

The next step of LegalZoom’s free LLC formation process gives customers two more upsell opportunities to enhance their orders. Users can opt for expedited processing of their new business for a fee of $99 or can select standard processing for no extra cost.

Finally, customers of LegalZoom’s Basic LLC formation package can add a Founder’s Kit to their order for an additional $99.

  • Review your order.

The last thing you need to do is to carefully review your order before continuing to the checkout page and paying LegalZoom for your customized LLC formation package.

After completing your order, LegalZoom will file your business’s information with the Secretary of State. Depending on if you opted for expedited processing, the turnaround time will take somewhere between one business day and two weeks. However, this service only applies to LegalZoom’s processing and doesn’t reflect state turnaround time for state processing.

Once the LLC filing process is complete, your business documents will be made available online in your account and mailed to you.

LegalZoom Additional Services Worth Noting

Not only does LegalZoom provide LLC formation services, but they also offer additional services that can be beneficial for someone starting their own business. You can check out some of them in our list below:

  • Entity name reservation: If you’ve come up with the perfect name for your new business, LegalZoom will help you ensure someone else doesn’t take the name before you’re ready to file your LLC’s articles of organization. LegalZoom’s entity name reservation service is available for $49 plus state filing fees.
  • Doing business as (DBA): If the name registered to your new business is long or clunky, LegalZoom can help you apply for a DBA name that’s shorter or more catchy. You can register your business’s DBA name with LegalZoom for $99 in addition to state filing fees.
  • Compliance calendar: LegalZoom understands that there are a lot of different dates and documents to keep track of when running a business to remain legally compliant. LegalZoom’s compliance calendar service is available for an annual fee of $69.
  • Business advisory plan: For those who have already officially formed their new businesses but would benefit from more legal support, LegalZoom offers two different business legal plan services. Both plans include the same robust set of features but differ in their subscription options. Customers can purchase LegalZoom’s six-month business advisory plan for a monthly fee of $43.17 or its 12-month plan for $39.09.
  • Business licenses: Depending on the industry, your business will require various licenses and permits to operate legally. Starting at $99, LegalZoom takes care of this legal hassle for you.
  • Certified copies of business documents: LegalZoom can also help companies get certified copies of all business documents that have been filed with the secretary of state. LegalZoom offers a Standard Package for $45 plus state filing fees and an expedited Rush Package for $75 plus state filing fees.
  • Certificate of good standing: LegalZoom can help existing businesses obtain a certificate of good standing, a document that verifies your business has complied with all legally required reports and state fees.
  • EIN: This service is only included in LegalZoom’s Pro and Premium packages. However, the EIN service can be purchased a la carte for $79.
  • Annual reports: LegalZoom’s annual report service can be purchased a la carte for $99 plus state filing fees (standard processing and shipping) or $119 plus state filing fees (expedited processing and shipping).

Starting your own business is an exciting decision – but it’s also a big one. As such, it’s essential to carefully consider all of your LLC formation service options before making decisions.

LegalZoom vs. Swyft Filings

Right out of the gate, LegalZoom has 14 years of business formation experience over Swyft Filings. LegalZoom has helped create a substantially larger number of businesses than Swyft Filings. For people who are apprehensive about the LLC formation process, this is a significant advantage of LegalZoom.

However, Swyft Filings offers more competitive processing times than LegalZoom, including same-day LLC filing. Swyft Filings also includes expedited shipping services within its two upper-tiered LLC formation packages.

LegalZoom vs. Incfile

Unlike LegalZoom and several other LLC formation competitors, all three of Incfile’s packages provide customers with one free year of registered agent services. On top of that, Incfile’s annual renewal rate of $119 is significantly lower than LegalZoom’s yearly fee of $199.

Incfile’s free LLC formation package also offers more customer support than LegalZoom’s free package does. While customers of LegalZoom’s Basic package have access to email and chat support, customers of Incfile’s correlating package have access to unlimited phone and email support.

LegalZoom vs. ZenBusiness

Comparing the companies side by side, LegalZoom offers access to attorneys and legal expertise that ZenBusiness lacks. Legal expertise aside, ZenBusiness’s prices are more competitive than many of LegalZoom’s. All three of ZenBusiness’s LLC formation package options include more business services when compared to LegalZoom’s packages.

For example, ZenBusiness’s lowest-tiered package includes one free year of compliance support, whereas LegalZoom customers will have to add that service to their order for a fee. ZenBusiness also includes a faster turnaround time for customers of their Pro and Premium LLC formation packages, whereas LegalZoom doesn’t offer expedited processing in any of their packages. Instead, LegalZoom customers must add this service to their order for $99.

However, ZenBusiness’s Pro and Premium packages are an annually billed service, while LegalZoom’s packages are priced as a one-time fee.

Who Is LegalZoom Best For?

LegalZoom offers a plethora of legal services that provide support for both new and existing small businesses. Customers have the option to select one of LegalZoom’s three LLC formation packages that provide their preferred level of business support. On top of that, LegalZoom also offers various business and legal services that can be purchased online a la carte via its easy-to-use platform. While other companies offer more competitively priced LLC formation packages, LegalZoom’s attorney services set it apart from the competition.

With over 20 years of industry experience, LegalZoom’s team of experts has helped customers start more than two million businesses. While admittedly on the more expensive side, LegalZoom’s refined legal expertise makes it a strong choice for entrepreneurs seeking assistance to form their own LLC.

LegalZoom (LZ) can be a good service for someone with a do-it-yourself approach to business formation.

If you’re shopping around for a low-cost LLC formation package with articles of organization and name check services included, LZ’s Basic Plan will do the trick. But you’ll have to take care of your operating agreement and EIN on your own, and LZ’s registered agent services will cost you an extra $249 per year.

LegalZoom stands out amongst the competition for its unlimited 30-minute legal consultations, included with the Premium Plan for the first three months. LZ also has a 60-day, 100% satisfaction guarantee and Wix websites to build your business’s online presence are complimentary with every plan.

LegalZoom LLC overview and facts

LegalZoom was established as a tech company in 2001. Since then, LZ has added business formation services, tax filing/advising and other business and personal services to its roster. The company now has corporate offices in Los Angeles, Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area.

While LegalZoom offers a $0 LLC formation package, the price tag isn’t the only thing to look for when deciding whether or not to sign up. According to William Fry, CEO of Beacon, a company that assists with buying and selling small businesses, you should also focus on customer reviews.

“Some providers have terrible customer service,” warned Fry, “so you’ll regret going with a service that appeared cheaper on the front end but cost you more in time and headaches on the back end.”

Most customers have positive things to say about LegalZoom. On Trustpilot, over 80% of LegalZoom reviews are five stars. Most customers comment on how easy it is to use LegalZoom and their positive experiences with customer service.

LegalZoom LLC plans and pricing

LegalZoom is one of many LLC formation services that has packages starting at $0, plus state filing fees. But you should be prepared to pay state filing fees of $50 to $500 or more, and depending on your needs, the $0 package may not include everything it takes to form your business.

“Feature-wise, you definitely want filing of your articles of organization and registered agent services, but the EIN is so easy to D.I.Y. it’s not worth paying for,” said Fry.

With LegalZoom, registered agent services aren’t included in any package, so you’ll have to pay $249 per year to get the services on top of your plan’s fee. By comparison, Bizee includes complimentary registered agent services in its $0 package for the first year and charges $119 annually afterward.

While registered agent services may be cheaper through some competitors, most business formation companies charge fees for EINs and operating agreements, just like LegalZoom. However, unlike some competitors, LegalZoom’s offers live chat support, a free app and a website, regardless of which plan you sign up for.

LegalZoom’s Basic plan costs $0, plus state fees. According to LegalZoom, this plan is for someone who can do most of the work themselves and who only wants the necessities for making their business official. (Namely, filing of your articles of organization.)

For just the cost of your state filing fees, LegalZoom’s Basic plan comes with the following:

  • Articles of organization filing.
  • Name check service.
  • Wix website.

If you go directly through Wix, you’ll pay a minimum of $16 per month for a website.

The mid-tier plan from LZ costs $249 plus state fees. LegalZoom recommends the Pro Plan for customers who need the essentials for compliant operations but who can do most of the work themselves.

For the $249 Pro plan, LegalZoom customers get these additional features that don’t come with the Basic plan:

  • Operating agreement.
  • Tax consultation with a small business specialist.
  • Consultation with a business insurance agent.

If purchased separately, you’ll pay $79 for LegalZoom’s EIN filing.

The Premium plan from LegalZoom costs $299, plus state fees. This top-tier plan is recommended for customers who want upfront advice from attorneys to help ensure they properly form their business.

When you opt for the Premium plan — which is $50 more than the Pro plan — you get all of the features listed above, plus a three-month subscription to the following services:

  • Unlimited 30-minute attorney consultations.
  • Attorney review of your legal contracts and documents.
  • Monthly copyright registration.
  • Access to a library of legal forms.

Note that attorney consultations are limited to one call per business topic, and you’ll be charged $49 per month for the legal services in this plan after the month period ends. Alternatively, legal advising is available through LegalZoom’s Business Advisory Plan for $469.00 a year ($39.09 per month) or $ 43.17 per month, which would be billed at $259.00 every six months.

LegalZoom add-ons and optional features

LegalZoom’s three LLC formation packages are bare-bones when it comes to business formation features, but there are plenty of services you can add to your package for an extra fee. Add-ons can be chosen during the set-up process, and they include:

  • Registered agent services: $249 per year.
  • Compliance calendar: $69 per year.
  • Tax plan: $1,188 to $1,428 per year.
  • Legal protection plan: $469 per year.
  • Standard annual report filing: $99, plus state fees.
  • Rushed annual report filing: $119, plus state fees.
  • EIN filing: $79.

Registered agent services

Businesses must designate a registered agent in each state where they conduct business to ensure that time-sensitive legal, government and tax documents are received and promptly forwarded to the company’s headquarters.

Since registered agents are required to list their physical locations (P.O. box addresses are not allowed), Hal Brand, a CPA in southern California, suggests “home-based business owners use registered agents within their own states, so their home addresses aren’t exposed.”

LegalZoom’s registered agent services are easy to sign up for and use. They cost $249 per year per state. If you purchase these services as a stand-alone option, you will not be refunded if you decide to cancel.

LegalZoom is also among the most expensive options, with companies like BetterLegal ($90 per year) and InCorp ($129 per year) offering cheaper services.

If your company already has a registered agent designated in your formation documents, LegalZoom will file the required change in registered agent documents with the state for no additional charge.

Once any mail is received, it takes five to 14 days for documents to be scanned and uploaded to your account. In comparison, there are many competitors that offer same-day delivery of documents, like Bizee .

This service also includes access to email or SMS alerts from LegalZoom’s compliance calendar, which is typically an extra $69 per year. These alerts warn subscribers about critical tax and annual report deadlines to help avoid incurring filing penalties. LegalZoom’s registered agent services also include $1 million in identity theft protection and credit monitoring for you and your business through Experian.

If you’re on a tight budget, you might want to go with another option, especially since the registered agent services aren’t included in any of LegalZoom’s business formation packages. Like its competitors, LegalZoom offers registered agent services in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Business advisory plan

If you want the legal perks that come with the Premium plan, you might consider a Business Advisory plan instead. LegalZoom’s Business Advisory plan includes:

  • Thirty-minute attorney consultation per legal matter.
  • Contract/legal document review (up to 10 pages).
  • Annual business evaluation (with the 12-month plan only).
  • Unlimited downloads from legal form library.

These plans are available for an annual payment of $469 a year ($39.08 a month) or $259 ($43.16 a month) billed every six months.

LegalZoom customer support and experience

LegalZoom offers live chat support on its website, and you can use chat to connect to an agent in less than a minute. Phone support is also available Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on the weekends from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST.

LegalZoom vs. ZenBusiness

If you go through LegalZoom or ZenBusiness, it can get expensive to purchase all of the key business formation services you need.

LegalZoom offers a better price on one-time EIN filing, but if you also want a registered agent and an operating agreement, you could save $24 per year by going through ZenBusiness. Plus, ZenBusiness has excellent customer reviews on TrustPilot and only around 95 closed complaints on BBB for the last year, versus LegalZoom’s over 400 closed complaints.

LegalZoom vs. Bizee

Bizee is another business formation company that offers free packages, and just like LegalZoom, the $0 package from Bizee does not include an EIN or operating agreement.

It’s free to file with the IRS for your EIN, but some business owners prefer the help of an LLC service .

If you want to spring for help with your EIN, operating agreement and registered agent services, you’ll want to choose one of the LLC services paid plans. Both companies offer EIN filing and operating agreements with their mid-tier plans. However, you’ll save quite a bit of money by choosing Bizee’s Gold plan over LegalZoom because Bizee includes a free year of registered agent services with its plan.

Is LegalZoom right for your business?

LegalZoom can be a cost-effective option for someone who doesn’t mind doing most of their own paperwork. While the $0 package lacks some of the features you might eventually want, like an EIN, it can be easy enough to file for an EIN on your own .

If you spring for a pricier package, you’ll still have to pay for some of the business formation services you may need, like registered agent services. For most customers, the legal consultations that come with the Platinum plan are likely to be the most valuable feature. Still, you’ll have to budget your consultation time wisely since you only get 30 minutes of advising per topic.

There are also no discounts with LegalZoom. However, if you own a law or tax firm, you can get discounts for registered agents in multiple states through Legalinc, a fully-owned subsidiary of LegalZoom.

If weekend support is important to your business, LegalZoom offers nine hours of customer service access on Saturdays and Sundays. And some of its services, such as unlimited document storage and instant compliance alerts, are helpful tools. But, for most small businesses, a more affordable option will likely be the right choice.

Methodology

We extensively research the key competitors within an industry to determine the best products and services for your business. Our experts identify the factors that matter most to business owners, including pricing, features and customer support, to ensure that our recommendations offer well-rounded products that will meet the needs of various small businesses.

We collect extensive data to narrow our best list to reputable, easy-to-use products with stand-out features at a reasonable price point. And we look at user reviews to ensure that business owners like you are satisfied with our top picks’ services. We use the same rubric to assess companies within a particular space so you can confidently follow our blueprint to the Best LLC Services.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

LegalZoom offers all the basic services you’ll need to start an LLC, but they can get pricey if you need multiple services, like annual report filing, registered agent services or an EIN, since you may have to pay a separate fee for each one.

LegalZoom does not provide annual report filing or alerts with any of its LLC formation plans.

Their compliance package is available for $280 a year, and it includes filing of your annual reports, a compliance calendar to help you monitor upcoming filing dates and alerts . LegalZoom guarantees that they’ll pay your fine or penalty if they miss a deadline while you’re subscribed to their compliance package.

Customers with Premium plans from LegalZoom will automatically be charged $49 per month for legal service s after 30 days. Some customers have filed complaints with the BBB about unexpected, recurring charges, so you may want to monitor your payment account for unexpected transactions while using LegalZoom.

LegalZoom guarantees a refund for customers who are not 100% satisfied during the first 60 days. Refunds do not include fees that have already been paid to third parties, such as state filing fees and attorney fees.

LegalZoom offers a variety of business formation services, including registered agent services. LegalZoom also offers legal advice for business and personal matters, including:

  • Estate planning.
  • Tax advising.
  • Accounting services.

Paying an attorney an hourly fee or retainer can be very costly — and for many small-business owners, that expense may be prohibitive. That’s where LegalZoom and LegalShield come in. These online legal services can help entrepreneurs start a business and maintain it successfully in compliance with the law.

If you're considering online legal services, this review provides a comprehensive comparison of LegalZoom and LegalShield, so you can decide which might be a better choice for your small business.

Bizee

Both LegalShield and LegalZoom offer pretty much everything you’ll need (from a legal perspective) to form your business — and then run your business for years to come.

Here are some features you can expect from LegalZoom, for both business formation and normal business operations:

Formation services for Limited Liability Company (LLC), corporation, nonprofit, sole proprietorship.

Employer identification number (EIN).

Tax, license and permit services.

Business naming services.

Workplace benefits.

Bill of sale.

Independent contractor agreement.

Nondisclosure agreements.

Trademarking services.

LegalShield

Similar to LegalZoom, LegalShield offers services for starting a business as well as continuing to run that business all while remaining compliant with local and federal laws. Here is a breakdown of LegalShield’s services:

Unlimited phone consultation with your attorney.

Document and contract review.

Letters and calls on your behalf.

Debt collection services.

Trial defense.

Member discounts.

Business formation services.

Registered agent service.

While there’s plenty of overlap in features, the pricing of LegalZoom vs. LegalShield is very different. Each service provided by LegalZoom comes with its own package options and pricing. You can also price things on an individual basis, like if you needed specific documents but not the full services of incorporating. On the other hand, with LegalShield, plans are organized by the number of employees a business has. This could work in favor of some businesses, but it could be a downside for others.

For example, to get an EIN, prices start at $79. Certified copies of documents like DBA filings, annual reports or dissolutions, start at $45. To form an LLC with LegalZoom, this is how the pricing breaks down:

If you know the documents you need outside of a business formation package, finding the pricing will be simple — but if you’re unsure, it might take some searching around. If you’re looking for attorney advice, there are two options: the Business Advisory Plan (starting at $31.25 per month) and the Legal Advantage Plus (starting at $9.99 per month).

If you’re looking for LegalShield's normal small-business plans, these are the package options you have to choose from:

While all of the plans offer document review and feedback, if you need your attorney to actually draft a document for you, there are two options: You could download a free template, fill it in and then have your attorney review it or your attorney could draft it from scratch — and that’s where the 25% off hourly rate comes in, as you would receive that discount on your attorney’s hourly rate to draft a document from scratch.

LegalShield also has a program to help you form your business called Launch , and that comes with a different price. For $145 plus state filing fees, you will be connected with a local business attorney who will help you find the right business entity to form, complete all the related paperwork and file it for you. In addition to that, you'll receive legal support for three months after your business is formed.

LegalZoom and LegalShield have about the same number of pros as they do cons, but determining which are your non-negotiables will help you decide which is better for your business.

No monthly membership to be locked into.

You will get a copy of any documents that have been filed on your behalf.

Individual pricing benefits small businesses that don’t need full service legal help.

Attorney plans available for those who need more advice.

No downloads or edits of any documents.

Access to attorneys isn’t free and doesn’t come with any other package options.

Customer service gets very mixed reviews.

Have to know what documents or services you need in order to find pricing.

Access to your attorney on an unlimited basis.

Pricing based on number of employees.

Everything you need to form your business.

Member perks, like discounts at stores including Target and Verizon and hotels like the Holiday Inn.

Attorney satisfaction will vary depending on the law firm you are assigned.

Canceling membership can be tricky.

Only 39 associated law firms throughout the U.S. and Canada, so finding one in your state might not be possible or your options will be limited.

It’s fair to say customer reviews are one of the first things people search for when trying to decide if they should go with a particular company, product or service.

Taking individual experience, mood and state of mind into consideration, the most common complaints seem to be about hidden charges, LegalZoom not making it clear what is an add-on that can be opted out of and customer service. Many people noted that they were still being charged for services they hadn’t received, or that had been canceled.

When it comes to customer service, many reviewers noted long wait times or it being impossible to get in touch with anyone at all, and when they did they were met with less than ideal assistance.

However, it’s not all bad. Those with positive experiences with LegalZoom said that they were able to have their legal questions answered quickly and for much less than they would have spent if they went with a law firm. The ample options available to customers is also a huge plus. Customers were able to complete any and all documents needed for their business without having to deal with multiple different companies.

Out of all the LegalShield reviews, the negative ones seemed to have one common theme; those who were customers when it was called PrePaid Legal are not satisfied with what the company has become. They note the lawyers are of lower quality, getting in touch with customer service is tricky and people have experienced being charged for services even after notifying the company of cancellation.

Since the company continues to operate as an MLM (multi-level marketing) business, LegalShield as an overarching company doesn’t have full control over the attorneys offered and the way certain things are handled, so this may be an explanation for the varying degree of reviews.

Those who reviewed the business services were pleased with the sound advice and results they received from attorneys. Overall, those who have left positive reviews appreciate the knowledge and attentiveness of attorneys and just how much cheaper LegalShield’s services are compared to hiring an outside attorney.

Looking for online legal services, but not sure where to start? Finding a service that fits the bill can be challenging, especially since there aren’t many options available.

With nearly 4 million customers served and counting, LegalZoom deserves a look. They’re a “household name” in the industry without a doubt.

In this LegalZoom legal services review, we’ll examine some of their pros and cons, pricing, features, customer reviews and more. In a few minutes, you’ll know if LegalZoom is the right way to go, or if you should look into other options. Enjoy!

Some Pros & Cons of LegalZoom

Pros of legalzoom.

  • LegalZoom offers a money-back guarantee at any time within 60 days of purchase. Most other online legal services offer trial periods, but few this long.
  • Few competitors can match their experience. They’ve helped 3.6 million customers since opening their doors in 2001.
  • They provide access to tax professionals and an annual business evaluation by a lawyer, two features most online legal services don’t offer.
  • With LegalZoom’s Business Legal plan, you get one copyright registration per month included in your subscription. From books to photographs, you’d be surprised how many creative works are covered.
  • Starting at $31.25/mo for business customers, their rates are lower than most competitors offering comprehensive online legal services.
  • Their customer service is easy to reach by phone, and US-based agents are available from 8am-10pm ET Monday through Friday, 10am-7pm ET on weekends.

Cons of LegalZoom

  • Their customer feedback is hit and miss. On SiteJabber they average a 3.1 rating out of 5. More than half of their reviews are perfect 5-star scores, but there’s plenty of criticism to be found as well.
  • As is often the case with large companies, their customer service is a bit inconsistent. Some people have great experiences with their reps, while others feel like they’re getting the run around.
  • Reviewing documents longer than 10 pages with an attorney can get expensive. Each one will result in an upcharge of at least $39, although documents that exceed 25 pages will cost you into the hundreds.

Based on everything we’ve run through, I’d give LegalZoom ’s legal services a 4.4 out of 5. I think it's worth considering if you need access to legal documents and attorney help - while on a budget.

LegalZoom Pricing & Features

LegalZoom opts for a streamlined and simple approach to packaging, so there’s only one package available for their legal services. That being said, there are discounts available depending on payment plans.

Business Advisory Plan = $36-$31.25/mo

With the LegalZoom Business Advisory Plan, you get a ton of features for your money. In addition to the items listed in the screenshot below, you receive one copyright registration per month, as well as subscriber rates for other services like incorporation and registered agent.

Legalzoom Plans

Plus, If you hire any attorney from LegalZoom’s network, you will receive a 25% discount off of their total legal fees. As we mentioned earlier, document reviews exceeding 10 pages can get costly in a hurry.

  • 11-15 page documents: $39
  • 16-25 page documents: $99
  • 26+ page documents: Price varies by attorney

You don’t need us to tell you LegalZoom can get expensive if you need lots of document reviews, so make sure to factor that into your decision.

Customer Reviews

LegalZoom is a household name, and has the reviews to show for it. The company itself has hundreds of reviews for their Incorporation services. But since they divide their reviews by service, I’ve included their Legal Services reviews so you can get an up close look at what customers are saying about the service itself.

Customer reviews as of 9-11-2017:
  • Consumer Affairs: 3.2/5, 40 votes
  • Sitejabber.com: 3.2/5, 607 reviews
  • TrustPilot: 4.1/10, 10 reviews
  • LegalZoom (Legal Service Specific): 4.5/5, 457

Aside from the LegalZoom reviews, there are reviews on other sites that raised some pretty legitimate concerns. The complaint that I saw most frequently was that the customer service was either really hard to get a hold of, or evasive when it came to answering direct questions.

Having said that, they do still have a pretty large volume of 5 star reviews, especially about their legal services. The market for this type of product is also pretty small online, so it’s clear that customers are pleased to have this service available.

How LegalZoom Compares

LegalZoom is a great choice to provide you with top online legal services because they offer comprehensive legal assistance, and their experience and longevity are tough to beat. Still, let’s briefly look at Rocket Lawyer for a well-rounded comparison of pricing, features and more.

Pricing: LegalZoom offers one package at $36/mo, while Rocket Lawyer’s packaging starts at $39.95 and offers an additional package for $49.95. I’ll get into which one is a better value in just a bit, but if we’re only talking about price, LegalZoom is a smidge cheaper.

Features: Now Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom work a little bit different. Rocket Lawyer is a templating service and a legal resource in one, while this package from LegalZoom offers the legal resource alone. So, while the Rocket Lawyer packages are a little bit more per month, they offer a two in one service that LegalZoom doesn’t have available.

Customer Service: Looking at what customers are saying, LegalZoom has experienced issues handling customer service needs. They offer email and phone support for customers, along with the support you would receive from their on-call attorneys. Rocket Lawyer on the other hand offers email, phone and livechat support, and when we looked through Rocket Lawyer’s customer reviews noticed that most customers (for the most part) appreciated the service they offered.

Number of Businesses Served: Both of these companies have served millions of users and those numbers continue to grow. But if we’re looking at numbers alone, Rocket Lawyer wins out. LegalZoom has served over 4 million, while Rocket Lawyer serves over 20 million.

Pricing Starts at $31.25/month

Frequently Asked Questions

Does legalzoom have a free trial.

No, not technically, but they have a 60-day money back guarantee. At any point within two months of purchase, simply request a refund and they’ll return any fees paid to LegalZoom. Some competitors only offer a one-week trial!

How Accessible Is Their Customer Service?

LegalZoom has longer phone support hours than anyone else in the industry. They’re available every weekday from 8am-10pm ET, and every weekend from 10am-7pm ET. That being said, they have had issues with providing adequate customer service to users in the past. This isn’t a universal experience by any means, but it’s something you should take into consideration before deciding.

Are There Any Extra Features Included?

LegalZoom includes access to tax professionals with their online legal services, as well as one copyright registration per month. Those are features you won’t find with many of their competitors.

Should You Use LegalZoom?

Based on everything we’ve run through, I’d give LegalZoom ’s legal services a 4.4 out of 5. I think it's worth considering if you need access to legal documents and attorney help - while on a budget. That being said, if this doesn’t sound like your perfect fit, check out our  Best Online Legal Services for Business . Cheers!

LegalZoom FAQ

LegalZoom works with licensed attorneys and tax professionals with more than five years of experience. Its lawyers’ experience ensures that LegalZoom documents are legal and in compliance with federal and state laws.

If you’re not satisfied for whatever reason, LegalZoom offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Within 60 days of purchase, you can get a refund or credit on the price of services.

Yes. LegalZoom documents will hold up in court, but state and federal laws are subject to change.

LegalZoom’s prices aren’t necessarily expensive compared to the market rate. On average, independent attorneys and legal professionals charge an hourly rate between $100 and $400. Instead of charging per hour, LegalZoom uses a flat fee structure to provide small businesses and individuals with affordable legal services. Most packages and services also have state or federal filing fees, which are required by law.

Is LegalZoom legit?

Yes, LegalZoom is legitimate. Since launching in 2001, LegalZoom has helped more than 4 million people. Customers praise the company for its quick services — challenges with the legal services company occur mainly in cases where delays between government offices and LegalZoom cause the customer to contact the government organization directly. We recommend the service for small businesses looking for legal advice and individuals in need of legal assistance on important personal matters.

Excellent to speak with, extremely knowledgeable and efficient. The representative walked me through each step of (setting up an LLC) process and explained everything in detail. Thank God I decided to use Legal Zoom. I am looking forward to utilizing all of the services they offer, including accounting and legal services.

We’re grateful for your positive feedback and appreciate your support. Thank you, Robert!

I called Legal Zoom and within the hour had my new LLC set up, all my questions asked, felt comfortable and confident with the process. I highly recommend! They’ll say it takes 15 minutes but it doesn’t. Be prepared to spend 45 minutes or so because you will have questions. It’s worth it and it’s done! I had the rep stay on the phone with me and fill out the forms for me. That was easiest and best because I did have many questions along the way.

Thank you, Iona, for allowing us to be a part of your journey and for taking the time to share your experience. We wish you the best with your small business.

I have PTSD and have a hard time recently with face to face visits. I spoke to Brandi. She was calm cool and collective. She listened. She interjected her honesty and truth. She exhibited the most comfortable conversation I've had in a LONG time. She is smart, diligent, profound, intellectual, spiritual, loving, kind, funny, and most of all humble. Her energy was a delight and she was a breath of fresh air. People who answer phones have the ability to change the trajectory of a person's day and Brandie went out of her way to make an impression on my soul. That takes skills. She should be teaching these classes to the business. Encouraging, uplifting, and real. Again, thank you!!

Much love- Rebecca with **.

Your feedback has made my day! Thank you for sharing your experience, Rebecca.

I've never felt the need to write a review of any person or product before, but Davey went above and beyond to help me. I'm starting my LLC and very stressed out about all the legality and tax codes. Davey provided the absolute best customer service I've ever had. I was only able to stump him once, and rather then give me a half answer he directed me to someone that would know more. I'm recommending him to everyone in my office and anyone stressed about taxes or starting a business. 10/10. Couldn't ask for a better rep. If I didn't need his help as my LegalZoom rep I would definitely recruit him to my sales team.

This is wonderful feedback that we cannot wait to share with Davey and the team. Thank you for taking the time to provide your experience, Logan.

I contacted Legalzoom to get assistance with my inactive business which I started years ago. Life happened and I could not focus on the business and getting it set up properly. I had gotten a little behind on my fees. After a recent layoff and having the time to focus on what I wanted to do, I wanted to keep my business, keep legalzoom as my registered agent, but I also wanted to change my business name and the vision of my business. Michael was my agent and he was sooo helpful with providing me with solutions for all three and letting me know it can be done. It allowed me some breathing room with limited resources and a new way to getting the ball rolling on my business milestones. I've been with Legal Zoom for four years, have recommended them to others and I don't see myself ever starting any business and not leaning on their services.

We know Michael will appreciate this just as much as we do. Thank you for taking the time to share, Monica!

Legalzoom has been nothing short of a nightmare. I've spent over $500 on services that I thought would make life easier, yet somehow here we are... "Total Compliance" is something I assumed would help make sure my business is in... Total compliance... With state and federal laws, but it doesn't.. That information (after already paying $199) would be an additional $99 for the "Total Compliance Report". This website has not provided a single, tangible benefit to my company, other than filing the LLC. Another huge issue is not being able to look at any company documents. Every single document I try to open has the same error message EVERY SINGLE TIME, "Oops, looks like something is broken. We are working on it!". My experience with LegalZoom has been an absolute nightmare (expensive, confusing, stressful, waste of time/money). Avoid like the plague.

Legal Zoom has horrible customer service. They are a subscription service, so beware. Even after you stop using them months and years later, they will charge you their yearly subscription fee and not notify you by email or otherwise. You could paying for a service you are not using. I haven't used them in 2 years and just accidentally noticed they charged me their yearly subscription fee of $199 at the end of the 2023 in December. No phone notification. No email notification. Absolutely no notification of the charge.

When I saw it on my credit card statement, I contacted them today, and they told me it was too late to cancel. No exceptions. They tried to sell me the entire time. I have to talk to more than one person and it took nearly an hour for them to tell me they can't refund me. I then asked to talk to a supervisor. They said one would call me by end of business day. I received no call. It's horrible customer service and it's shady when platforms don't notify you of their yearly subscription service charges. I will never use their services again.

If you are new to forming an LLC and are looking to hire a company that will educate you along the way, do not hire LegalZoom. They will gladly take your money (lots of it) over & over without explaining. As soon as I noticed a charge on my account that I was not expecting, I reached out to LegalZoom to cancel the service and refund the charge. The charge went through on January 21st. I started calling as soon as I noticed the charge on January 25th. I took all the steps the first agent told me to take to get the refund. I called back, as she instructed, when all the steps were complete. The second agent I spoke with told me that she had no authority to complete a request made to the first agent but that she did see where the first agent promised a refund.

The second agent said she would send it to a supervisor and I would receive an email and the refund within 24 hours. 24 hours later, I had received no additional communication. I called again. The third agent I spoke with said that regardless of their promises, there would be no refund. I asked to speak to a manager with more authority to make such decisions. He said he would be glad to have a manager contact me within 24 hours to help me understand better that there would be no refund. If you want a company that will take care of you and not give you the run-around, choose anyone else.

Customer service Alma is very helpful in helping me set up my LLC in Houston TX. She is patient and knows what need to be done to start a new company. When a small problem occurs, she took the time to fix the problem in a timely manner. I would definitely will refer my friends to try LegalZoom.

Your willingness to share your experience has been greatly appreciated, Frank.

First time communicating with LegalZoom and the representative was extremely helpful. She was knowledgeable and was quick to answer my questions. She also referred me to a particular page on the website that provided more questions. We will be buying a product because of her knowledge and customer service skills.

Thank you for your kind and encouraging feedback, Harry!

legalzoom

LegalZoom.com , Inc. is a legal services and online business formation company that enables its customers to get legal help without necessarily having to hire an attorney. The legal technology platform largely provides personalized online legal solutions and legal documents for individuals, families, and small businesses.

LegalZoom offers these online legal services at affordable prices. Packages are built to meet your specific needs and generally range from $79 to $349, with options to tack on additional services if needed. Some common add-ons include registered agent services, tax advice, and unlimited access to the legal forms and business documents library. Many businesses also opt to pay a low fixed rate for ongoing legal advice and attorney consultations.

Most customers use LegalZoom for its fast and simple LLC formation process. You are also able to apply for licenses, permits, and tax IDs with LegalZoom. But, it doesn’t end there. While Legal Zoom offers plenty of business formation help, its service offerings extend to nearly every part of your life.

Here is a quick list of additional legal forms that LegalZoom offers:

  • Brand Protection Forms: Copyright registration, provisional patent application, trademark registration, search, and monitoring documents.
  • Wills and Trusts: Estate planning documents, last will and testament, living trust, power of attorney, and living will.
  • Family: Marriage and divorce, name change, etc.
  • Real Estate Planning : Residential lease and property deed transfer

LegalZoom: The Good and The Not So Good

LegalZoom LLC is one of the industry’s top online legal services providers. But, even this company has some room for improvement. Let’s take a further look at the pros and cons of LegalZoom, so you can decide whether it’s the right provider for you and your business.

  • Experience: LegalZoom was founded over 20 years ago. In that time, the online legal services company has helped over 2 million small business owners and entrepreneurs form their companies.
  • Range of Service Offerings: LegalZoom is a one-stop shop for all things legal services related. Whether you have personal, professional, or business legal needs, LegalZoom can help. The platform offers a wide range of services – from business formation and intellectual property protection to registered agent services and tax contracts. This level of versatility is unmatched in the industry.
  • Business Advisory: LegalZoom offers a Business Advisory Plan for business owners that want year-round attorney advice and guidance to help protect their companies. This plan is ideal for those who need ongoing help with legal forms, contracts, agreements, copyrights, etc. It’s also perfect if you want a personalized legal plan every year. This route is far more cost-effective than using LegalZoom’s one-off service every time you need assistance.
  • Money-Back Guarantee: LegalZoom has a long-lasting satisfaction guarantee period where customers can get a 100% refund if unhappy with LegalZoom’s services (no questions asked).
  • Extended Business Hours: LegalZoom offers generous customer support hours in comparison to many competitors. You can reach out to LegalZoom’s customer service team with questions or concerns seven days a week. Representatives are available from 9 am to 9 pm (EST) Monday through Friday and from 10 am to 7 pm on the weekends.

The Not So Good

  • Expensive Service: LegalZoom is not the most affordable legal service provider available. The company offers one-off services, all priced on the higher side. For example, its basic business formation package starts at $79, plus state filing fees. The costs involved do not include advanced features or tools. There are definitely more affordable options on the market, offering the exact same service. That being said, you are paying an extremely experienced and reputable provider, which is a factor to consider.
  • Multiple Upsells: In addition to its expensive one-off services, LegalZoom presents you with a series of upsells before, during, and after completing your purchase. Some of the upsells include an operating agreement and EIN, which are things that other providers include in their package selections. This makes the purchase process slow, complicated, and ultimately expensive.
  • Pricey Registered Agents: LegalZoom’s Registered Agent Services are some of the most expensive in the industry. It costs around $299 every year. In comparison, many competitors offer this service free for your first year of business and charge around $100-$150 per year after that. For example, both ZenBusiness and Northwest Registered Agent have basic packages that already include one free year of their registered agent solutions.
  • Slower Turnarounds: The LegalZoom LLC formation turnaround times are slow compared to other providers. It can take LegalZoom a full 30 business days to complete the process, while some providers have your documents ready within 7 days. You can pay more for LegalZoom’s expedited service, but even that is quite slow. The fastest option takes 10 business days from start to finish.

LegalZoom: Pricing

LegalZoom strongly believes that every business deserves comprehensive legal protection. That’s why the company provides a wide range of services – all at affordable price points.

To form an LLC, there are three filing speed packages available, Economy (20 business days), Standard (10 business days), or Express Gold (2 to 5 business days). Turnaround times will largely depend on the package you purchase, along with any state-specific backlogs. If you’re in a rush the Express Gold package offers the fastest service.

If you’re unhappy with the process of service in any way, LegalZoom offers a 60-day money-back guarantee, and refunds are processed within five business days.

LegalZoom vs. Rocket Lawyer: Which Is Right for You

Whether you need business legal services or personal legal services, you might not want to go through the complex process of hiring a law firm (especially if it’s a simple matter).

Luckily, there are online legal services like LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer that provide the legal forms required to register a business or handle a personal issue. However, small business owners and individuals just starting a business are their most popular customers.

Both LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer can help you register your business name, get proper tax IDs, and create workplace policies. Plus, the filing fees are minor compared to what you would pay using an attorney.

So, what’s the difference between the two? This LegalZoom vs. Rocket Lawyer comparison will help you determine which option is best for you.

Feature Comparison

Both LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer offer extensive features that mimic the services provided by an in-person law firm. While not every online resource can possibly provide every service needed, these platforms are considered on-stop shop options to get a head start on the legal form process.

Rocket Lawyer Services and Features

While Rocket Lawyer helps with the business formation process, they also provide services to help you continue to operate with all the necessary legal requirements, including additional legal documents that are want-to-haves versus must-haves.

Here are some of the key services and features Rocket Lawyer offers:

  • Business incorporation
  • File bankruptcy
  • Manage employees
  • Buy/sell a service
  • Non-disclosure agreements
  • Independent contractor agreements
  • LLC operating agreements
  • Swear statements
  • Update/manage a contract

LegalZoom Services and Features

LegalZoom has similar offerings to Rocket Lawyer, making it difficult to decide between the two solely based on the feature list.

Here are some of the key services and features LegalZoom offers:

  • “Doing Business As” name (DBA)
  • Operating agreement form
  • Business name availability check
  • Business name availability check and name reservation
  • Federal and state tax ID (EIN)
  • Trademarking search and name
  • Various business licenses and legal forms
  • Own registered agent service
  • Consulting services agreements
  • Bill of sale
  • Intellectual property
  • Workplace benefits

Pricing Comparison

LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer both offer comprehensive features, but there are some real differences in their pricing models.

Rocket Lawyer Pricing

Rocket Lawyer has limited pricing options and only offers two packages, which vary based on the amount and types of legal documents you need.

For example, all Rocket Lawyer services can be purchased individually. This is called the non-member package. You will pay per legal form or service, which is if your own business only has a few legal needs.

The premium membership costs $39.99 per month and includes:

  • Various legal form options that can be signed, downloaded, shared, and printed any time and anywhere.
  • 30-minute attorney consultations for new legal matters
  • 25% off their registered agent service
  • Free incorporation filing for new members (plus any state filing fees)
  • Document Defense® with on-call lawyers

Rocket Lawyer also offers a free trial for seven days. It includes everything offered in the Premium membership package, but limits you to 3 legal documents and 1 question. This is ideal for those who have never used the platform and want to test it out before committing to a monthly membership.

LegalZoom Pricing

LegalZoom has an entirely different pricing model. There are no memberships offered. Instead, every legal form and service is purchased on an as-needed basis.

As a reminder, the Standard package costs $99, the Premium package costs $119, and the Express Gold Package costs $349. For package details and features, re-visit the in-depth LegalZoom pricing review above.

Customer Support Comparison

Having to deal with important legal issues and documentation can be extremely stressful. Responsive and knowledgeable customer service representatives can make all the difference for any online business.

While both LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer offer informative support centers, there are a few key differences between the two services.

Rocket Lawyer Customer Support

Rocket Lawyer offers various resources on its site and provides excellent customer support. The company has a dedicated customer support page that discusses multiple topics like starting a business, contracts and legal forms, membership options, and technical solutions.

Further, Rocket Lawyer’s customer service options allow users to get instant help via live chat. You can also reach a representative by sending an email or calling directly (business hours: Monday to Friday, 9 am to 9 pm EST).

LegalZoom Customer Service

LegalZoom also has a dedicated resources page that covers things like starting an LLC, registering a trademark, managing your business, navigating business formation, and much more.

On a separate support page, you can read through FAQs, which mainly address technical issues and order/subscription-based questions. You can also contact LegalZoom customer support over the phone Monday – Friday between 9 am – 9 pm EST and Saturday-Sunday between 10 am – 7 pm EST. The only other option is to submit a question via an online form. There is no live chat feature or email address offered.

Best LegalZoom Alternatives

While LegalZoom is a well-established online legal services and business formation company, there are several other LLC formation services to choose from.

These are the best LegalZoom alternatives that can help you start a business efficiently and effectively:

ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness is another excellent alternative to LegalZoom. The company offers straightforward, affordable business formation packages that start at $39 plus state fees (compared to LegalZoom which starts at $79 plus state filing fees). That includes a full year of registered agent services.

One thing to keep in mind: ZenBusiness specializes in corporation and LLC formation , while LegalZoom offers legal services beyond business formation. If you only need a basic LLC service for operating agreement and articles of organization filings, opt for ZenBusiness. But, if you need attorney advice, tax help, or access to an extensive library of legal forms, it’s best to pay the extra money and use LegalZoom.

Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer is another great LegalZoom alternative (read the full comparison above). The company provides high-quality legal services past business formation – all at affordable prices. This includes free incorporation services, customizable legal templates, excellent legal advice and support, and exclusive discounts on various legal services.

LegalZoom Review

When you think of online legal services, chances are good the first name that pops into your head is LegalZoom . Many consider it to be the industry leader and today we are taking a look at this service: the good, the bad, pricing, and more.

LegalZoom has a great reputation of being a one-stop shop for all your legal needs whether it’s regarding a business, professional, or personal matter. Thought it’s not the cheapest option on the market, LegalZoom offers customers proven reliability, product versatility, and great customer support.

With all this in mind, LegalZoom should be a top contender for your next online legal services provider.

LegalZoom Compared to The Best Online Legal Services

LegalZoom has some of the most versatile service offerings in the online legal services space. Whether you want to form a business, protect your intellectual property, or need family law advice, LegalZoom can help.

For all these reasons and more, we included LegalZoom in our list of best online legal services . Here are our top picks:

  • Rocket Lawyer  – Best for most
  • Bizee (formerly Incfile)  – Best for business formation
  • LegalZoom  – Best for flat fees and versatility
  • UpCounsel  – Best for complex legal needs
  • Avvo  – Best for free legal advice
  • LegalMatch  – Best for locating an attorney near you

LegalZoom: The Good and The Bad

LegalZoom is one of the top providers of online legal services. It has a lot to offer prospective customers. But even the best providers have areas in which they could improve. We’re going to take a look at the pros and cons of LegalZoom’s offerings to help you decide whether it’s the right solution for your business.

Industry Experience : LegalZoom has been leading the online legal services industry for over 20 years. In that time, it’s helped over 2 million entrepreneurs and small business owners turn their dreams of forming their own company into a reality. With this level of experience, you can rest assured that your business’s legal needs are in extremely capable hands.

Diverse Range of Legal Services: If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop for personal, professional, and business legal needs, LegalZoom is the one for you. It offers the most versatile range of service offerings in the industry. From business formation to intellectual property protection, and registered agent services to tax contracts and agreements, LegalZoom has got you covered. You’ll have all the services you need to start and maintain your business at your fingertips when you have LegalZoom on your side.

Affordable Business Advisory Plan: LegalZoom’s Business Advisory Plan offers business owners convenient access to year-round attorney help, for an affordable, flat monthly fee. This plan is perfect for anyone needing regular assistance with contracts and agreements, legal forms and copyrights, or just general legal advice to help protect your business. It’s far more cost-effective than constantly using LegalZoom’s one-off services and it’s also one of the least expensive plans on the market.

Great Customer Support: In the past, reviews on LegalZoom’s customer support have suggested the quality of support was inconsistent and disappointing. However, in recent times, it seems as though they’ve stepped it up a notch. Current customers consistently report excellent customer support, often commending their support representative by name. The support team is friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable – exactly what you want in a support crew.

Extended Customer Support Hours: Aside from the quality of customer support being great, LegalZoom also extends generous support contact hours in comparison to its competitors. You can contact LegalZoom’s support team on all seven days of the week! The US-based support team is available via phone, email, and live chat from 5am to 7pm (PT) Monday through Friday and from 7am to 4pm on weekends.

Lengthy Satisfaction Guarantee Period: While many providers in the online legal service space offer some sort of satisfaction guarantee, nearly none of them give you two months to leverage the offer. If you’re unsatisfied with LegalZoom’s services (with the scope of their duties) they’ll correct the situation or provide a 100% refund on its services, no questions asked.

It’s great to see that LegalZoom stands behind its services like this. After all, they wouldn’t be offering a full refund for so many offerings if they expected most people to take advantage of it. But if you’re not happy, just check the LZ Guarantee terms to confirm eligibility and specific conditions for the services you’re using.

Screenshot of the LZ Guarantee badge, with a short description of LegalZoom's promise

Knowledge of Local Laws: When you access LegalZoom’s services, you can trust they will fit your location in the United States. LegalZoom operates legally in all 50 states, and it has documents that fit individual state laws. Even though LegalZoom operates nationally, it makes use of local attorneys that can ensure you are following local regulations and laws. Laws for forming an LLC vary from state to state, so it is extremely important for LegalZoom to operate in this manner.

Not the Cheapest Service Available: LegalZoom is not the cheapest provider out there, but they certainly aren’t the most expensive either. All of their one-off services are priced on the higher side. For example, the lead-in business formation package starts at $0 plus state fees and it doesn’t really include any advanced or impressive features. In saying that, you are paying for the service of an extremely trustworthy and experienced provider, which is worth a little extra in our books.

Excessive Upsells: In the instance that you’d like to form your business with LegalZoom, you’ll face a series of upsells before you reach the package selection screen. We went through the process and found it quite cumbersome. In fact, the process even assumes that you’ll utilize LegalZooms registered agent service, without providing clear advice on the costs involved. Furthermore, some of the upsells such as an operating agreement and EIN are things that other providers already include in their packages.

A screenshot of LegalZoom's product page for registered agent services, including the pricing of $249 per year.

Expensive Registered Agent Services: LegalZoom’s registered agent services are some of the most expensive options in the market, at $249 per year. In comparison, most competitors offer registered agent services for around $150 per year, with some even dipping as low as $100. Furthermore, providers such as Bizee and ZenBusiness include registered agent services for free for your first year of business.

Slow Turnaround Time: LegalZoom’s business formation turnaround times are quite slow in comparison to its competitors. Other providers out there will process your paperwork on the same day or the next business day. But LegalZoom’s standard processing time is five to 14 days. You’ll have to pay a $99 expedited filing fee for one-day processing in states where this option is even available.

LegalZoom Pricing and Options

LegalZoom offers a wide range of online legal services. The starting rates for LegalZoom’s business formation services are:

  • LLC formation: $0 plus state filing fees
  • Corporation formation: $149 plus state filing fees
  • Registered agent services: $249 per year

These prices certainly aren’t the highest in the industry. But when you take a closer look at the features you’re getting for your money, they don’t offer particularly high value, especially for forming a simple LLC .

For example, the lead-in formation packages include basic features such as comprehensive name search and paperwork filing, online order tracker, lifetime customer support, and digital access to formation documents. In other words, they include the bare minimum.

On the other hand, LegalZoom offers businesses that require ongoing legal assistance affordable access to their Business Advisory Plan. For a flat monthly fee, you’ll have direct access to an attorney to assist with reviewing contracts and agreements, personalized legal advice, and access to dozens of legal forms.

Pricing for the Business Advisory Plan is $39.09 per month over 12 months or $43.17 per month over 6 months.

LegalZoom Business Advisory plans with option for 12-month or 6-month billing cycles

We’ll expand on the pricing of each one-off service further below, but the key takeaway here is that if you’re looking for the cheapest online legal service provider out there, LegalZoom isn’t the best option for you.

But if you are looking for an experienced and reliable provider that offers excellent customer support and can help you with just about any legal need, LegalZoom is a fantastic option.

LegalZoom LLC Services

In terms of experience, LegalZoom is an industry leader in the LLC formation space, helping more than two million businesses form an LLC.

LegalZoom makes it easy for anyone to get started. The process is super simple and the packages are affordable. Starting your business is as easy as:

  • Telling LegalZoom all about your business
  • Selecting your preferred business formation package
  • Sitting back and relaxing while LegalZoom takes care of preparing and filing your paperwork

LegalZoom LLC formation landing page

You can also use LegalZoom’s free business name availability checker to make sure your preferred business name is available. If you haven’t decided yet, you can skip this step and come back to it later.

There are three different LLC formation plans to choose from:

  • Basic – $0 plus state filing fees
  • Pro – $249 plus state filing fees
  • Premium – $299 plus state filing fees

The Basic package includes your Articles of Organization and name check service.

Paid plans come with an operating agreement, EIN, business license guide, and phone consultations to guide you through the process. Attorney-assisted help is available if you sign up for the Premium LLC formation package.

Regardless of the plan you select, LegalZoom will try to upsell you throughout the checkout process. Truthfully, you don’t need many of these products, so if you want to bootstrap your business formation, skip these offerings. You can always add them in later.

LegalZoom Incorporation Services

LegalZoom is also a popular option for businesses that are looking to incorporate. It helps businesses to form a C Corporation or an S Corporation.

If you’re not sure which option is most suitable for your needs, LegalZoom’s support team is available to offer personalized advice.

business advisory plan legalzoom

Incorporating your business with LegalZoom is just as simple as forming an LLC. You’ll answer LegalZoom’s questions about your business, choose your package option, and LegalZoom will take care of the rest.

LegalZoom’s incorporation packages and pricing are:

  • Economy: $149 plus state fees
  • Standard: $329 plus state fees
  • Express Gold: $349 plus state fees

All plans include business name availability check, incorporation documents and filing, articles of incorporation, and lifetime customer support. They also include a “next steps guide” and peace of mind review. The Standard and Express Gold incorporation packages also include a deluxe organizer, official certificates and seal, and expedited processing.

If you’re willing to pay for the Standard plan, you may as well go ahead and pay the extra $20 for the Express Gold package to also receive rush processing with the Secretary of State and express shipping.

Once again, the main difference between the three plans is the turnaround time. If you’re not in a rush to form your corporation, the Economy plan with its 30-day turnaround will suffice. But if you are pressed for time, go for the Express Gold package for fast processing.

Form your corporation with LegalZoom today!

LegalZoom Registered Agent Services

There are no two ways about it–every business needs a registered agent.

Registered agents handle the acceptance of official mail on behalf of your business. This can include things like court documents (if you get served), official state mail, state tax notifications, secretary of state notifications, and annual report notices.

In other words, they help your business to remain compliant and make sure you never miss important filing deadlines.

A screenshot of a LegaLZoom webpage, listing the three main reasons to secure a registered agent and the three steps to their process for securing one.

LegalZoom’s registered agent services start from $249 per year and also include:

  • $1 million identity theft protection and credit monitoring
  • Unlimited cloud storage for important business documents
  • Access to compliance calendar with upcoming critical deadlines
  • Coverage of paperwork and fees when switching from a competing RA

It makes sense to use the same service provider to handle your business formation and registered agent needs to keep everything in place.

But if you’re looking for standalone registered agent services , you’ll find cheaper packages elsewhere.

LegalZoom Trademark Search Services

If you’re interested in filing a trademark for your business name or logo, you can use LegalZoom’s trademark search to verify the availability before you apply. This will help you avoid any potential violations, saving you time and money before you officially apply for your trademark.

The process is fairly straightforward and typically can be completed in under 15 minutes. Simply fill out the required forms to tell LegalZoom about your search, and they’ll run a report to see if your mark conflicts with any existing trademarks or pending trademarks. Based on the results of the search, you can decide whether or not to proceed with filing your trademark or if you want to try another option.

LegalZoom's trademark search page showing a woman in a blue shirt holding a phone

There are three different plan tiers for the trademark service, and the price depends on how thorough you want the search to be.

  • Federal Search — $199
  • Federal, State, and Common Law Search — $299
  • WorldScan International Search — $499

At a minimum, you’ll likely want to select the Federal, State, and Common Law search. This covers over 20 million Secretary of State records for identical and similar names. It also covers identical or similar domain names. Basically, if you’re planning to file a trademark within the US, this is what you’ll need. But if your brand is international, you’ll need to opt for the WorldScan search.

LegalZoom Trademark Registration Services

If you want to protect your business name, logo, or slogan, LegalZoom has a simple trademark registration service that you can take advantage of. This helps add protection to your brand and prevent copycats from using your name.

Trademark protection is crucial for any brand in the retail business. If someone is knocking off your products with counterfeits, an official trademark will make it easier to defend your rights and sue anyone in violation of your mark.

LegalZoom trademark registration page showing a woman sketching writing on a tablet

This is an attorney-assisted service that costs $599 plus federal filing fees. An attorney will research the trademark for you and handle all of the appropriate filings along the way. If the trademark gets rejected, LegalZoom will cover the $599 fee to register a different mark.

While it’s still up to you to enforce any infringements against your trademark, LegalZoom can make this process much easier for you.

With LegalZoom’s trademark monitoring service, you can get active trademark monitoring and monthly reports. This even includes an advanced search, which covers trademarks with just one or two letters different from yours. These ongoing monitoring plans start at $175 per year.

We have a complete guide on trademarks that you can refer to for more information. You can also check out our step-by-step guide on how to trademark a logo .

LegalZoom Copyright Registration

For businesses and creative professionals seeking a fast and simple way to obtain a copyright, LegalZoom has you covered.

Copyrights help you control how your work is used and provide you with the legal protection you need to defend yourself against infringements. LegalZoom has facilitated the delivery of over 90,000 copyrights, so it’s safe to say they have plenty of experience in this space.

LegalZoom copyright registration page showing a man wearing headphones on a computer

This online legal service works really well for protecting things like:

  • Photographs

Basically, any written, recorded, or otherwise tangible creative work can be eligible for a copyright.

LegalZoom’s copyright registration starts at just $114 plus federal filing fees. This includes the electronic filing of your application with the United States Copyright Office and a confirmation when the Library of Congress receives it.

This is backed by LegalZoom’s 100% satisfaction guarantee. So if you’re unhappy, you can get a full refund of LegalZoom’s fee within 60 days of your purchase.

LegalZoom Virtual Mail

LegalZoom’s virtual mail solution is perfect for businesses and individuals who value privacy. It’s especially useful for entrepreneurs and home-based businesses, as you won’t have to use your personal address for business correspondence.

Even if you have a traditional office space, LegalZoom’s virtual mailbox adds an additional layer of privacy to your mail. It ensures that nobody, including your employees, can access sensitive documents for your eyes only.

Getting started is easy. It’s just a matter of choosing an address, and LegalZoom takes care of the rest.

Once you’ve set up an account, LegalZoom can receive mail on your behalf. They’ll securely scan your mail so you can access it online from anywhere, which is super convenient for those of you who travel often and don’t always have access to your mailbox.

LegalZoom can filter out junk mail and even shred your mail so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands once it’s been disposed of.

You can even get packages delivered to your virtual mailbox, with free storage for up to ten days.

There are three different LegalZoom virtual mailbox plans to choose from:

  • Starter MailBox – $29 per month
  • Essentials MailBox – $39 per month
  • Premium MailBox – $79 per month

There are additional fees for things like letter storage after 30 days, check deposits, mail forwarding, and special requests. The biggest difference between the plans is volume and how many recipient names you can include with your address.

Check out our list of the best virtual mailboxes for alternatives to LegalZoom’s service.

They charge a base fee for their services and a separate state filing fee, which goes directly to the state where you form your LLC. Similar compliance services from LegalZoom cost $280 annually.

LegalZoom’s Premium plan is $299 plus state fees, and adds the fastest filing speeds ZenBusiness already includes in its mid-tier plan, and ZenBusiness Premium is $349 plus state fees. ZenBusiness Premium also includes a business website, email, and domain. In addition, you can add legal services to your LegalZoom package or registered agents and financial software to your ZenBusiness plan.

ZenBusiness vs. LegalZoom: Registered Agents

Many states require LLCs and other business entities to list a permanent registered agent, also known as a statutory agent, resident agent, or agent for service of process. This person can be the business owner or a third party, like ZenBusiness or LegalZoom. Both business formation providers offer registered agent services in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. As a registered agent, the third party’s name and address go on public record, allowing them to receive official mail from the Secretary of State and other state agencies in person or via mail.

ZenBusiness charges $199 annually for a registered agent in the state where you filed your LLC or corporation paperwork. It receives most government communications on your behalf and then scans and uploads the documents to your online portal. If a matter needs your attention, ZenBusiness will send you a notice via postal mail. To view government communications, log into your dashboard and check the Documents section.

Like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom can be your registered agent on record, meaning their physical address is on file for legal and tax matters, including if you are sued and served papers. It costs $249 per year, which is more than ZenBusiness.

However, in addition to agent availability from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, LegalZoom offers a few other benefits. They send alerts when you get important mail and provide a compliance calendar with email notifications for annual reporting and tax deadlines. Unlike ZenBusiness, LegalZoom’s RA services include a $1 million identity theft protection policy and Experian credit monitoring for you and your business.

LegalZoom has registered agents for various business entities, including LLCs, corporations, nonprofits, limited partnerships, and limited liability partnerships, whereas ZenBusiness covers LLCs and corporations.

ZenBusiness vs. LegalZoom: Features

ZenBusiness and LegalZoom provide additional tools and services along with business formation assistance. ZenBusiness has fewer offerings than LegalZoom, focusing on business formation, compliance, and finance, whereas LegalZoom covers many business aspects, estate planning, and offers attorney advice.

Through ZenBusiness, small companies can receive a report listing all required business licenses and permits or complete and file an annual report based on your state’s requirements. Its worry-free compliance services include reminders for filing and compliance activities, yearly report submissions, and two business amendment filings. In addition, ZenBusiness Money helps self-employed individuals track mileage, income, and expenses. Users have a financial dashboard for invoicing clients and finding tax deductions.

While LegalZoom offers a Wix website with business formation packages, ZenBusiness has a website builder available as an add-on or as part of its Premium plan. It also provides an add-on for business documents and templates. This paid feature gives access to service and contract agreements. However, LegalZoom has similar templates available for free on its website. Moreover, LegalZoom provides more options for protecting intellectual property and scaling your business, such as trademark filing and legal assistance.

LegalZoom assists nonprofits wanting 501(c)(3) status and companies needing a list of required local, county, state, and federal licenses. Like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom clients can purchase services for filing annual reports or amendments or select LegalZoom's total compliance for bundled tools, including a compliance calendar and yearly report submissions. Additionally, LegalZoom helps with trademarks, patents, and copyrights.

LegalZoom has a business advisory plan for legal services. This package includes 30-minute attorney consults on new legal matters, document and contract reviews, and, for entrepreneurs with a 12-month package, LegalZoom provides an annual business evaluation. And business owners can establish wills, living trusts, or comprehensive estate plans through LegalZoom services.

ZenBusiness Business Formation Services

Recommended For:

Startups and solopreneurs wanting to form an LLC or corporation

Companies needing ongoing compliance support or registered agents

Business owners looking for bundled tax, invoicing, and accounting tools

Not Recommended For:

Entrepreneurs wanting legal advisory services

Nonprofit organizations needing formation assistance

Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, ZenBusiness is a public benefit corporation (PBC) offering grants to small companies, business formation services, and accounting tools. It helps entrepreneurs plan and start their businesses, from reserving a business name to filing LLC or corporation paperwork.

Unlike LegalZoom, ZenBusiness provides formation assistance for free, meaning business owners only pay their state’s filing fee. Users can also complete other startup tasks through ZenBusiness, such as requesting an EIN or finding out what licenses they need.

For New York-based startups, ZenBusiness can handle the state’s requirement to publish LLC formation details in two newspapers within 120 days of registration. LegalZoom doesn’t offer this service. Similar to other providers in our rating, ZenBusiness has an operating agreement and compliance support.

These services come with Pro and Premium plans, or you can purchase them separately. ZenBusiness's registered agent service costs less than LegalZoom’s but more than other competitors like BetterLegal and Bizee .

Your business documents, entity information, and orders are accessible through an online dashboard, and users can add other services anytime. Once you’ve established your company, ZenBusiness helps you get a certificate of good standing and file amendments with your Secretary of State. For a one-time fee, ZenBusiness provides more than 25 templates for business waivers, contracts, and service agreements. These are available through your documents library in the ZenBusiness dashboard, convenient for frequently used forms.

ZenBusiness also lets you bundle financial and website tools with your formation subscription or purchase them separately. ZenBusiness Money Essentials is free for expense tagging and tracking, whereas ZenBusiness Money Pro includes invoicing tools, online payments, and tax prep features. Although LegalZoom offers a Wix website, it doesn’t have financial software.

LegalZoom Business Formation Services

Startups and established businesses looking to form a partnership, LLC, nonprofit, or corporation.

Entrepreneurs wanting ongoing legal or compliance services.

Business owners with intellectual property concerns.

Companies needing free LLC formation services.

Self-employed individuals wanting accounting software.

LegalZoom launched in 2001. It has offices in Austin, Texas, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles, California. LegalZoom provides professional and personal services, including business formation assistance, estate planning, and legal advice. Like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom users can reserve a business name and form an LLC, S-Corporation, or C-Corporation. However, it also supports LLPs, limited partnerships, and nonprofits, which many competitors don’t offer. Along with filing paperwork for these entities, LegalZoom assists organizations with gaining 501(c)(3) status for tax exemption.

LegalZoom customers can add services to streamline the startup process, including EIN registration, DBA (doing business as) filing, operating agreement creation, and a business license report. But it doesn’t provide New York publication assistance. LegalZoom’s compliance support covers annual filing and amendments. Unlike ZenBusiness, LegalZoom doesn’t bundle compliance services with formation subscriptions, but a free Wix website comes with all LLC formation plans.

Its registered agent program is more expensive than others in our rating of the Best LLC Services of 2024 . However, LegalZoom’s legal advisory services cost less than $40 per month. Attorneys will review business documents or contracts and answer new legal questions. LegalZoom also provides an extensive database of customizable templates in more than a dozen categories.

Companies with intellectual property can use LegalZoom to establish patents, copyrights, and trademarks. It also offers other business services, including certificates of good standing, corporate name change filing, and entity conversion. While it lacks the financial tools provided by ZenBusiness, LegalZoom has several estate planning services which can help business owners prepare for their future.

Which LLC Service Is Better?

ZenBusiness ties with BetterLegal for the No. 1 spot on our Best LLC Services of 2024 rating. It’s the best solution for cash-poor startups and established businesses wanting to form an LLC or corporation. ZenBusiness provides basic services for companies in any industry, and professional reviewers note that the pricing is easy to understand.

However, LegalZoom is the better option if you’re considering alternative entities, such as a nonprofit or LLP, or want ongoing legal advice. Its pricing structure and the sheer number of services are a bit more overwhelming than ZenBusiness, but LegalZoom provides legal, intellectual property protection, and nonprofit formation services.
