Here’s my theory: there are two types of people. One type loves going on vacation and derives the most enjoyment from being on vacation. The other type loves the planning part as much as — if not more than — the vacation itself.
If you’re one of the vacation planning enthusiasts, you might have thought about being a travel agent. Travel agents are one of the more “old school” at-home workers, and it’s a proven industry that just gets more and better suited to remote work as time goes on, internet tools get developed, and even the most remote parts of the world begin to get online.
So, if you’re the person in your family who just revels in putting together the perfect itinerary for your upcoming trip, if you know all the deal sites, travel hacks, and best ways to see the world, then maybe being an at-home travel agent is the perfect job for you! Let’s take a closer look at this gig.
Why Be an At-Home Travel Agent
In addition, the overall industry of at-home travel agent work has a lot of options. You can choose to work for a company in a more traditional employment arrangement, or pick something that’s much more entrepreneurial in nature and take on a lot of the benefits and responsibilities of freelancing.
When I spoke with Andrea Joyce, an independent vacation specialist with Cruises Inc ., I asked her why she wanted to be an at-home travel agent. Here’s what she told me:
My motivation was 15 years ago when I wanted to find a way to help provide for my family and be a stay at home mother. This job has provided me with flexibility to be there for my children when they need me, to travel, to help people put together their dream vacation, as well as providing me with the income I need.”
She really hit the nail on the head for why this type of work-at-home arrangement is so fantastic. You’re making a huge difference in the lives of your clients and customers to help them plan their ideal vacations, and you’re making a huge difference for yourself and your family by bringing in extra income from home.
As you think about becoming an work-from home travel agent, think about how much flexibility you want for your “time on” and how much you’re willing to do your own marketing — greater flexibility often comes with the need for greater marketing efforts. Just remember — marketing is something that can be learned, and most organizations that set you up to be your own independent business will also offer marketing training and resources.
If you’re an enthusiast of a particular type of vacation, or a specific location, you can put your enthusiasm and expertise to work for you. It truly is what you make of it.
Do I Work for Myself or for a Company?
As a travel agent, you can work with an agency, create your own agency, or “go big” and work for a corporation. Many travel agent jobs with major corporations will look a bit more like customer service, with set schedules and whatnot. They might not be as flexible as you’d like, but you also have the benefit of joining a well-established company.
For example, if you want to be a travel planner for a cruise line, you may need to be available by phone for customer service operations. On the other hand, if you’re part of a boutique cruise-planning agency, you might be able to have extreme flexibility as long as you’re able to be response (and take the occasional daytime call when necessary).
You can learn more about host agencies and get a feel for the right approach to you by visiting Host Agency Reviews . This site really gives you a good overview of “the lay of the land” so you can understand a bit more about how travel agencies are structured, and get a feel for where you think you might fit best.
Types of Companies That Hire Remote Agents
If you want to work from home as a travel agent, you’ve got all kinds of options. Quite a few companies and industries are hiring work-at-home travel agents, so with a bit of patience, you can find something absolutely perfect for you. You can also try a few different types of remote travel agent positions over time, once you know the lay of the land a little better.
Some of the most commonly known ways to work from home as a travel agent are with these companies:
- Cruises — Companies like Cruise.com and Cruises Inc. hire at-home agents to help customers book their dream cruises, shore activities, and more.
- American Express Travel Counselors — One of the concierge services that American Express offers its customers is the travel counselor. These at-home agents are available 24/7 to help with booking travel arrangements, event tickets, and more. It’s a high-end service and does require some background in travel agency.
- Red Butler — This opportunity is particularly interesting. Red Butler offers all kinds of virtual services for their customers, and it isn’t a travel-specific agency but it does have a travel-specific arm.
- Various Disney-oriented organizations like Travel with the Magic . Many of these are commission-based, and you receive a portion of the booking fee for every booking you make. If you’re a Disney enthusiast, helping other people plan their dream Disney vacation is a great way to make money online!
- Carnival Cruise Lines
- Working Solutions
- World Travel Holdings
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- Holland America Line
- Norwegian Cruise Lines
- Princess Cruises
- Shanty Creek Resorts
- Travel Leaders Group
- Best Western
- Hotel Tonight
- Omni Hotels
- Starwood Hotels & Resorts
- ACTIVE Network
- Carlson Wagonlit
How Flexible Are the Hours?
The flexibility you have comes down to which company you join and what type of role you’re taking on. There are two basic approaches to working from home as a travel agent. One is to take a role with a set payment of some sort, like a salary or an hourly rate. These will be a traditional employment model, except you’d be working from home instead of at the office.
The other way to be a travel agent is to look for an agency that hires agents on commission. As a commissioned travel agent, you’ll be able to take charge of your work to a much larger extent. You’ll be set up as a contractor and given access to the company’s resources, including things like software and leads.
As a commission-based contractor, your income would be tied to the amount of work you take on. You can work full-time hours 9-5, you can work evenings while your kids are asleep, or you can just book a trip here and there when you want some extra income.
The approach with this type of work-at-home setup looks more like running your own business, which offers you a lot more flexibility but also requires a bit more self-direction. (That said, your agency should offer lots of resources available to you to succeed. You won’t truly be on your own!)
What You’ll Need to Get Started
Some remote travel agent jobs — like the one with American Express — will require prior travel agent experience. Others are completely open to entry-level travel agents, which means you’ve got great opportunities no matter what your experience level is.
It’s extremely helpful to have your own travel experience under your belt so you can understand not only what it’s like to plan a vacation like the ones you’re selling, but also what it’s like to be on one. You can make recommendations based on personal experience, which your clients will find very helpful. I’m not saying you need to start taking mega vacations all the time to be successful as a travel agent — just that it’s helpful if you’ve got your own experiences to lean on.
Logistics-wise, you’ll need to have some sort of home office set up . Some positions will require specific technology (like a certain Internet speed or even a separate phone line), while others will let you conduct your working hours whenever and however you want.
What Are the Resume and Experience Requirements for Being a Travel Agent?
You don’t need special education or a degree to be a travel agent. That’s one of the great things about this line of work! The most important thing you need to be a great travel agent is an enthusiasm for helping people plan great vacations. That said, you might come across some job descriptions with specific requirements and such, like any traditional job description might have.
Most travel-related businesses that are hiring travel agents will be looking for experience either as a customer service representative or in the travel industry. It will also benefit you if you can show experience working from home. If you’ve never had the job title of Customer Service but you’ve had a role that involves dealing with the general public, you can certainly position that experience as relevant.
Many travel agent opportunities, however, will be looking more for your enthusiasm and experience planning trips than they will a specific work history. If you’ve never had a job in your life but you go to Walt Disney World three times a year and you live and breathe “the mouse,” you’ll likely interview well with a Disney-oriented travel agency.
No matter what, you’ll need to be able to demonstrate administrative skills like organization, professional interaction with customers, and the ability to work within a budget. You’ll also need to have the skills and attributes that will make you successful working at home. These include things like being self-motivated (instead of having the presence of a boss to keep you accountable) and the ability to stay organized and meet deadlines. You might, depending on the role, also need to be willing to pull some unconventional hours here and there.
Finding Work-from-Home Travel Agent Work
Depending on what type of work you want to do, the way to find it may vary. One sure-fire thing to do is check the careers pages of the organizations you’re interested in joining.
You can also search the job boards — my favorite is FlexJobs — for remote travel agent work. Keep checking these regularly to see what kinds of opportunities come up and jump on them quickly.
Some at-home travel agent opportunities (like most of the Disney-oriented ones) let you join up any time, because instead of filling an opening like a traditional employee, you’re starting your own small company, almost like an affiliate or a franchise of a larger travel company.
One thing to keep in mind with these opportunities is that there is sometimes a cost to get started. If you’re working for a traditional company, with a traditionally structured job, don’t expect to pay startup fees (aside from getting your home office up and running). But some travel agent companies will require a joining fee and/or fees for the mandatory training you’ll need. It’s commonly said that any work-at-home job that requires you to pay money to join is a scam… and while this is typically true and good advice, some of the at-home travel agent jobs you’ll find will be perfectly legitimate. As always, do your own research.
Are There Any Work-at-Home Travel Agency Scams?
As there are in nearly every profession, there is a common scam going around that tries to trap people looking for at-home work as travel agents. It’s a variation of the all-too-common check-cashing scheme.
Avoid being taken in by scammers by looking for any kind of payment arrangement that involves you receiving legitimate money from your clients and then turning around and sending a portion of that money via wire transfer to someone in another country. That’s a clear red flag that you’re being scammed.
That said, there will be time when start-up fees are required and legitimate. If you’re going to be an employment-based travel agent, your employer will most likely cover the costs of starting up your home office. But if you’re joining an agency that’s hiring you as a contract worker (and you’re therefore technically starting your own business,) you might have some start-up fees for things like insurance and special training (which is common for Disney-focused travel agents in particular).
Have you ever thought about working from home as a travel agent? I think it looks exciting, and it’d be fun to learn about all the different destinations and approaches people want with their vacations.

12 business career paths that require you to travel (and some pay well)
29 Mar 2021 9 MIN READ
Brought to you by TravelPerk , the #1 business travel platform.
Have you been bitten by the travel bug? Would your dream job see you globe-trotting around the world? Perhaps you would like a career that allows you more corporate travel to enjoy opportunities to connect with other industry professionals, share ideas, and get inspired! Maybe you would prefer the option to be based in another country or the flexibility and freedom to work from different locations throughout the year? Perhaps you speak a second language you would like to put to good use or wanderlust has you desiring to experience a different way of life? Whatever your reasons for wanting more business travel there are a variety of career options that can make this a reality.
What are the best business career options that require travel?
Sales representative.
2020 taught many companies that face-to-face interaction cannot be beaten. Whilst virtual sales meetings dominated last year, lots of industries have learned the hard way that product demonstrations and business negotiations are often best conducted in person. If you enjoy connecting with people and solving problems, a career in sales could be just the ticket.
Retail Buyer
Whether it’s food, fashion, or furniture, brands need to travel to select their product range. Larger companies will have at least one designated retail buyer. Their job is to meet manufacturers across the country or travel internationally to find the best merchandise for their target audience. Retail is one of the career paths that will fare the strongest after COVID-19. In February of this year, our data demonstrated that retail has the second-fastest recovery rate of all the industries we surveyed.
Event Planner
The hospitality industry undoubtedly took a big hit in 2020, but under normal circumstances working as an events planner will often require lots of business travel. Whether they are accompanying clients or colleagues, events planners will need to coordinate arrangements on the ground to ensure everything runs smoothly. While some events will move online, many conferences and other business events will return to being held in real life. The technology to meet and speak online has existed for years but there are significant benefits to meeting in person that businesses will be keen to take advantage of again. In some organizations, event planning can be the responsibility of the marketing team so don't rule out these positions when conducting your job searches.

Whether you work for an agency or your own business, working as a consultant can involve both national and international travel to assist companies in solving their issues. Being a consultant relies on building strong relationships with your clients and getting to know their organization in detail. This requires lots of site visits and face-to-face meetings which can mean extensive travel arrangements, especially if you are working with international businesses.
Traveling Nurse
If you are a registered nurse your profession could see you exploring cities across the country or even further afield by signing up with recruiters to be a traveling nurse. This role will have you stepping in to resolve staff shortages with temporary contracts in different locations throughout the year. Alternatively, if you opt to work as a travel nurse internationally, you could be flown out to support aid workers after humanitarian crises. Having a bachelor's degree in nursing is a benefit, but not essential. It's also a plus if you are looking to work as a travel nurse internationally to speak a foreign language.
International Aid Worker
Those with a background in health, education, or certain sciences (for example agriculture) can find a place for their skills in large international development agencies or NGOs. Some positions might see you working in a humanitarian capacity, visiting countries after they have been affected by natural disasters, famine, or war. Meanwhile, other roles might see you contracted within a developing country, using your skillset to organize initiatives with local governments. Whether you choose positions in the field or within an organization’s headquarters, working in international aid or development is a rewarding career with lots of room for growth.

Civil Servant
A career as a foreign service officer can be a fantastic way to travel the world whilst enjoying a meaningful and fruitful career. Working for the government can offer job security and great perks such as a generous pension or healthcare. Whilst ambassador might be the most well-known foreign service job there are a wealth of roles, from psychiatrist to security expert, needed to support embassies across the globe.
Teacher / Teach English
Whether you opt to study for your TEFL to teach ESL or use an existing qualification, teaching is a great vocation for those wanting to live in different countries. English teachers are in high demand in many locations, but you might need to secure your first contract outside the major cities, as competition can be fierce. Some globetrotters combine their time teaching English with being au pairs or house sitters to keep costs of living low. Teachers of all subjects looking to travel can also establish themselves as freelancers online. However, the key to finding steady clients lies in finding a niche for your tutoring business. For example, if your background is in teaching English, what qualifications did your students need to pass and how could you tutor them through these exams? Alternatively, after gaining experience, teachers with a college degree can explore new career paths working as education consultants for international aid organizations.

Travel Writer
Travel blogs have exploded in popularity in the last few years. Whether it’s for a prestigious publication or their travel blog, writers combine their skills and love of travel to forge a career while exploring the world. While the self-publishing route is tricky, after building up a following on social media, travel bloggers can earn a full-time living through sponsorships or advertising on their websites. During Covid-19, many travel writers found themselves grounded, but both leisure and business travel will return as the pandemic eases. After all, people are keen to explore new destinations on vacation, and companies want to reap the benefits of meeting clients and colleagues in person again. For businesses in the travel industry, there is high demand for content to inspire travelers and help them navigate a world of travel that will undoubtedly be different from what came before.
If you love history or are a keen foodie, then life as a tour guide could offer exciting opportunities to share your passion with others. Perhaps the most sociable of travel jobs, working as a tour guide can mean being based in one location, becoming an expert on a town or a historical site. Alternatively, this career could see you travel the world if, for example, you choose to work for a cruise line or a high-end tour operator. As more professionals seek the digital nomad lifestyle, start-ups are looking to support them by creating group itineraries where they can network and build business connections with others while traveling. These companies often need a community manager to ensure participants have a great time and want to join the next chapter. If you thrive on meeting like-minded people, this could be a fantastic chance to travel and join a budding industry that is sure to succeed after the pandemic. More professionals have enjoyed a taste of remote working, and the need for extra safety measures will likely make these types of community manager roles even more critical.
Travel Agent
Does a career in the travel industry pique your interest, but would you rather stay in your current country? You can still bring destinations to life, sharing your travel tips with clients, and enjoy frequent business trips with a career as a travel agent. In this line of work, you will likely benefit from discounted rates and other perks for your vacations, as well as opportunities to develop into product or sales manager roles. In addition, travel agencies are increasingly open to allowing sales teams to work from home if you’d prefer to keep this arrangement after the pandemic. These days, high-end tour operators tend to use the name travel specialists rather than agents, so don’t forget to use this term as well when looking for vacancies. While 2020 saw the travel business temporarily put on hold, companies are currently busier than ever planning future itineraries for clients who are desperate to travel again.
Flight Attendant
The career that will see you traveling the most is undoubtedly being a flight attendant. Crews working long-haul flights of 12 hours or more might take in 3 or 4 destinations a month. A dream job for those who love to travel, long-haul flight attendants also enjoy the perk of paid layover time both before and after their flights. From Canada to Thailand, you can often spend this downtime relaxing in fantastic destinations many people dream of visiting! Plus, both you and your loved ones can benefit from discounted airfares for your vacations, depending on your employer.
Remote Working
In 2020 many professionals got an unexpected taste of working at home. In the past doing business on the road was largely restricted to influencers or freelancers who were making money from blogging, online businesses, being a travel photographer, or web design. However, more and more companies are allowing their teams to stay remote. Plus, countries are developing visas for digital nomads looking to work in different parts of the world throughout the year. If the digital nomad lifestyle appeals to you then it's worth considering any obstacles that your business might face. Is the work you do now compatible or is there a related job that might be easier to move around with? How will you take care of insurance, visas, healthcare, and taxes?
Whichever career path you follow, arranging corporate travel can be complicated, especially with the continuing upheaval from the COVID-19 pandemic. Flexibility will continue to be essential, and keeping on top of any changes to safety measures for your business trip will be vital. Should your plans need to change, any travel bookings made through FlexiPerk are 80% refundable . Do you love to travel? Do you have wanderlust? Are you a master at finding great travel deals?
Becoming a work from home travel agent might be your ideal work at home career path!
Working as a travel agent might seem a little outdated in today’s world of Kayak and Airbnb, but in reality, many people still prefer to work with travel agents.

Experienced travel planners help travelers save money, time, and travel-related headaches.
Home-based travel agents generally work for a host agency (a company bonded and accredited by the Airlines Reporting Corporation or the International Airlines Travel Agents Network) as independent contractors.
As a travel agent, you’ll earn a commission on the travel arrangements (flights, hotels, rental cars, travel excursions , and more) you book, and you’ll often have access to special deals and travel discounts. You can choose to work in a particular niche, such as cruises or business travel, or work with clients looking into a specific type of travel (adventure, Disney vacations, eco-friendly, budget, or luxury travel).
One of the great things about becoming a work at home travel agent is that it’s a relatively easy startup business idea, and the costs are low. With a basic home office (including an internet connection, a phone, computer, printer, and website), you can get started with a host agency.
So if you love to travel or if you love to help other people fulfill their vacation dreams, you may want to start a home-based travel agent business!
What Skills Do You Need to Be a Travel Agent?
The basic skills you’ll need as a travel agent include attention to detail, excellent research and communication skills, high-level organizational skills, and a knowledge of geography and travel destinations. You’ll also need to be tech-savvy and have a solid understanding of programs like Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
If you’re working as an independent contractor, the host company will usually train you; some host agencies charge a fee, while others do not. While there are travel agent certificate programs that you can take, you may be able to break into a travel role if you have customer service, hospitality, marketing, or sales experience under your belt.
Getting Started as a Work at Home Travel Agent
According to Host Agency Reviews, travel agents with three years of experience make an average of $46,580 per year . However, there are some travel agents making six figures per year. It all depends on your experience, the number of clients you retain, hours worked, and commission and support from your host agency.
Agents who work in specific markets or on particular vacation types (like destination weddings or luxury travel) can become very familiar with their market and, thus, enjoy even greater success. Working in particular markets, like weddings or corporate travel, can also make a big difference regarding salary.
Remote Travel Agent and Consultant Jobs
If starting your own business seems intimidating, many companies within the travel and hospitality industry hire at-home travel consultants, reservationists, and planners for full-time and part-time positions. Best of all, many of these positions come with travel perks!
To start, you may want to explore:
- American Express
- Kemp Travel Group
- Vail Resorts
- Working Solutions
- World Travel Holdings
Exploring Host Agencies
Finding a good host agency is key to getting started as an at-home travel agent. If you’re just starting, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with host agency options to get a feel for what each can offer.
- American Society of Travel Advisors
- Cruise Planners
- Disney Vacation Planner
- Dream Vacations Advisors
- Dugan’s Travel
How to Select a Great Host Agency
When it comes to what they offer their consultants, travel agencies vary significantly. There are many factors to consider besides who offers the best commission.
For example, do you prefer a large agency or a small agency? Locally-based hosting can be easier for new agents who might need extensive support and training. On the other hand, national agencies may offer more flexibility and growth.
Carefully weigh your agency options and perform background research. Sites like Host Agency Reviews and Find a Host Travel Agency can help. They offer tips and ratings for finding the best travel agency that fits your needs.
Perks of Becoming a Travel Agent
Aside from being a fun business opportunity, being a travel agent offers some amazing perks .
If you enjoy travel, you might enjoy taking “FAM trips” or “familiarization trips” to various locales. Cruise lines, hotels, and tour guides know the best way for you to sell their services is for you to try them firsthand. So they offer perks, including complementary and deeply discounted fares, as well as opportunities to use their services and explore all your amazing options.
You can also save big on your own travel with great discounts! You’ll score awesome deals before anyone else even hears about them. As a travel agent, you’ll have access to discounts because, of course, the more you travel, the more business experience you rack up.
The best part? You can deduct those travel expenses from your taxes as part of your business! You can also deduct things like advertising and expenses related to your clients. This amounts to big tax savings for you!

Other Ways to Make Money in the Travel Industry
If you love the idea of working and traveling, but you’re unsure about becoming a travel agent or consultant, there are many other options available.
Traveling to another country as an Au Pair is a great option if you enjoy working with children. When you work as an Au Pair, you’ll live with a family, helping them with household chores and childcare. In return, you’ll get free room and board and a small stipend that you can use on your days off. Being an Au Pair allows you to experience life in another country for an extended period of time. Becoming an Au Pair does come with some fees you’ll need to pay, such as your flights, travel visa, and insurance.

Customer Service Representative
Customer service is an excellent way to break into the travel industry and work from home! Many companies provide full training for these roles as well as a host of benefits. You can work for airlines, hotels, cruise lines, travel booking sites, and other travel-related sites and industries. For these work from home positions, you’ll generally need your own device (laptop or computer) and a high-speed internet connection. Check out this article for a list of hospitality companies that hire remote customer service reps.
ESL Teacher
You’ve probably heard of being an online ESL tutor , but did you know you can travel to another country to teach English as a second language? Most countries require ESL teachers to have a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate. Like being an Au Pair, there will be fees for your flights, travel visa, and insurance. Depending on which host company you use and which country to travel to, your housing may be free or purchased at a reduced cost. How much you can earn will vary as well. For more information on traveling and making money as an ESL tutor, check out the resources below.
- International TEFL Academy

Local Coordinator
If you enjoy working with high school and college students, consider becoming a local coordinator . In these independent contracting roles, you’ll work with educational organizations and programs to place and mentor students interested in foreign exchange programs. These part-time positions are a flexible and easy way to make extra money from home. Some programs also offer incentive trips and perks for their local coordinators.
- Education, Travel, and Culture – Earn $700-$1,600 per student
- International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES) – Average earnings are $8,000 a year
Social Media Marketer Specializing in Travel
Do you love to travel and you’re looking for ways to earn money from home, there are plenty of opportunities to take your travel beyond Instagram snaps and shares on Facebook… but if you’re really great at social media, you could also become a social media manager in the travel industry! Many of these positions allow you to work from home for a travel-based company, sharing posts and connecting with their customers.
If you prefer to create your own schedule and be your own boss, become a local tour guide! With this idea, you’ll need to be in the know about the food, culture, and history of the area you’re helping tourists explore. With apps like Showaround and Viator , you can create your tour, book customers, and make money from your travel expertise. You can also look at local tour operators and see if they have any openings for tour guides. Explore this article for more tips on making money as a tour guide .
Travel Writer
Magazines, guidebooks, and websites are often looking for freelance travel writers to contribute their experiences and give readers recommendations. If you have writing and communication skills and you travel often, this might be an excellent option for you.
The income for travel writers varies greatly, but many writers make great money by documenting and sharing their travels. Travel writers, according to ZipRecruiter , earn an average of $76,474 annually, or $37 per hour. I think these numbers sound high, but I wasn’t able to find any other stats for how much travel writers really earn.
Travel Blogger
If you prefer to write and document your own travels, start a travel blog ! With blogging, you can make money with affiliate marketing, ad networks, sponsorships, product sales, and more! The great thing about blogging is it’s affordable and easy to set up, and there are many free ways to promote your content through social media. My friend, Julie Bonner, has a travel blog where she documents her family’s RV travels. In one year, she was able to generate $5,000 a month from her blog, all while traveling the United States and Canada.
Travel Influencer
Have you been documenting your travels on social media? Then make money while traveling the world as a social media travel influencer. Whether your specialty is Instagram , Pinterest, TikTok , or YouTube , you can earn good money through paid sponsorships, advertising, and affiliate marketing. Besides building an engaged audience of followers, you’ll need to become skilled at taking photos and videos, editing, and writing captions. How much you can earn as a travel influencer will depend on how many followers you have, your reach, your engagement, and which platforms you’re using. According to this article in Vogue , a travel influencer with 1-4 million followers can earn $31,000 per post!
Travel Nurse
If you’re a registered nurse, you can sign up to become a travel nurse. These nurses travel to areas where there are nursing shortages in work in a wide variety of settings. Nurses typically work in one location for 13-16 weeks, then move on to another location. Not only is travel nursing a great way to see the country, but it’s also lucrative. The average travel nurse can earn $56.49 per hour plus housing stipends. If you’re interested in travel nursing, check out these sites for assignments.

Travel Tips — Published March 23, 2020 | 4 minute read
The spread of COVID-19 has brought non-essential travel to a halt. Business travelers, in particular, have had their itineraries for the coming weeks and possibly months changed in a matter of days. They’ve gone from spending significant time on the road to working from home (WFH). And that’s not ideal, regardless of the circumstances.
First, we encourage everyone to stay safe. Follow updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and your local governments.
Second, make a plan to stay productive at home and stick to it. That involves creating a quality office space, detailing—while remaining flexible on—daily tasks, maintaining your routine, and communicating effectively.
What should your home office look like?
Let’s start with this: Your home office doesn’t have to be an office proper. If you have the luxury of an extra room, that’s great. But converting a corner of a room, or setting aside table space, can be just as effective.
Whatever it is, make it your own. Set up pictures, trinkets, and books around your computer as you would in a regular office.
Here are some other things for you to consider for your home office:
- Have plants (small desk plants or bigger ones) nearby, as they may have mental health benefits . (If nothing else, they look nice.)
- Set up near natural light. If that’s not possible, make it a point to step outside from time to time. Lamps are a great addition as well.
- Order vinyl wall stickers of your company logo, so they’re visible on video calls.
- Purchase a portable whiteboard to keep track of tasks. (It’s also good for doodling during breaks.)
Don’t be afraid to ask around, either. Different people like different setups, so solicit tips from your colleagues, clients, and friends to help mold your new workspace.
Detail daily tasks (and be flexible.)
This is the balance you must find working from home, especially when so many others are in the same boat: Be detailed and flexible when mapping out your day. Things change quickly, and that small aside you’d have in your office is now an email or a phone call. The happy hour you’d attend for networking purposes is no more.
How do you make up for that absence? By prioritizing your tasks with breaks built in. Those breaks could be for leisure purposes or engaging with colleagues as you normally would during work hours.
For instance, you may start your day with three tasks that you need to complete. You could detail time deadlines for each, with gaps in between for anything that comes up. If nothing does, use the opportunity to check in with clients or colleagues.
And if you’re going a bit stir crazy without the aforementioned happy hour, suggest starting a book club, or streaming a new show with your pals. Crack a beer after work and discuss away. Just because you’re not traveling doesn’t mean bleisure no longer exists.
Maintain your normal routine.
You’ll likely hear this advice more than any other as it pertains to working from home: Maintain your normal routine. That’s trickier for business travelers, whose routines involve going from the airport to the hotel to the convention center and back.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow the advice. Wake up, shower, and put on business clothes as you would any other day. If you’re a suit-and-tie person on the road, be a suit-and-tie person at home (at least during business hours). If you like to grab Starbucks before starting your day, find one near you.
It’s the new norm, and the more you mimic your actual work setting, the quicker you’ll adapt.
Communicate effectively.
Business travelers and corporate travel managers prefer face-to-face meetings . People who work from home regularly prefer email as their primary form of communication . That’s something you may have to adjust to.
Start with an email when reaching out to a client you planned to meet, and be mindful of tone— Grammarly is a useful app here —as your intent could get lost otherwise. After all, people are understandably on edge. Go out of your way to make sure you recognize the situation and offer flexibility: You're fine talking after work hours; you're open to video calls; you don't mind a delayed response.
For internal communications, Asana and Slack are two apps to facilitate teamwork and productivity while you're working from home. If your company doesn't use them yet, consider getting them.
It's also good practice to follow your clients' social media pages. In times of crisis, that's often where you'll find the latest updates. Besides, their posts can let you know when to send that email or make that phone call at an appropriate time.
Whether you stay at your house is short or long term, productiveness in any setting is a useful skill. And when it comes time to resume your business travels, you know you can go home again.

Hear from our employees.
As a 17-year employee with 30+ years of retail experience, I can say that Costco is the best company I’ve worked for. It's not just a job; it's also a career!
Vee, cashier Illinois
If you asked 18-year-old me whether I wanted to work retail, I would have said you’re crazy. Ten years and two kids later, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Ryan, manager Minnesota
One reason that I stay at Costco is because of the opportunities. We are able to coach, teach, and mentor on a daily basis.

Disabled more likely to be in lower-paid and non-homeworking jobs – analysis
While carers and retail workers had some of the largest proportion of disabled workers, GPs and headteachers had much lower representation.

Around one in seven care workers and home carers in England and Wales have a disability, along with one in six retail cashiers and check-out operators, new analysis shows.
The proportion is similar for people working in call centres or as crossing patrol officers.
But the figure is even higher for care escorts – someone who travels with elderly or disabled people to help them get to appointments – at around one in five.
A leading charity said the findings suggest people with disabilities are “over-represented” in lower-paid roles that do not involve home working.
The Leonard Cheshire organisation warned that the Government should be focused on targeted support rather than benefit cuts as part of its controversial welfare changes aimed at getting people on disability benefits back into work.
The analysis has been compiled by the PA news agency using data from the 2021 census released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The census asked respondents to self-identify as disabled, which was defined as having a long-term physical or mental health condition or illness, lasting or expected to last 12 months or more.

Among care workers and home carers the figure was 14.6%, or 124,885 people, while for retail cashiers and check-out operators it was 15.9% (12,990).
The analysis, which focused on only those occupations with at least 10,000 workers, also showed library clerks and assistants (18.8% or 3,530 people), school crossing patrol workers (15.6% or 12,005), and youth work professionals (also 15.6% or 1,820) were in the top 10 jobs with the highest percentages.

Just 5.0% of GPs told the census they had a disability (7,975 people), with an even smaller proportion of 0.6% (1,040) saying their condition limited their day-to-day lives “a lot”.
Dr Hannah Barham-Brown, a GP registrar from North Yorkshire, said she found it disappointing but not shocking to see under-representation in roles like hers.
The 36-year-old, who has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and uses a wheelchair, said: “It’s disappointing to see such a small number of disabled people in roles like GPs, though sadly unsurprising.
“As a wheelchair user myself, I always say that more disabled doctors – including more of what I call ‘roll models’ – would help both disabled and non-disabled patients. But for this to happen, attitudes need to change and accessibility must improve.”
Some 6.4% of headteachers and principals are disabled, equivalent to 3,500 people, falling to 0.8% (435) who said they were “limited a lot” by their disability.
Nic Darker, who leads Leonard Cheshire’s employment programmes, said: “The latest census statistics show disabled people are underrepresented in higher-paying jobs and more likely to hold lower-paying jobs.”
He said the organisation’s own research showed one in five employers were less likely to hire a disabled candidate, and said disabled people must be provided with more specialised, tailored jobs support.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has said the work capability assessment, used to decide how much someone’s disability limits their capability to work, will be reformed “to reflect greater flexibility and availability of home-working after the pandemic”.
The welfare changes, applying to new claims only from 2025, would see people required to take part in a mandatory work placement and threatened with losing benefits if they do not look for work.
DWP officials stressed that mandatory work experience would only be used for claimants who had been unemployed for 18 months and would not apply to those with the most significant health conditions.
Mr Darker said offering support under threat of benefit cuts and sanctions “will only result in demonising disabled people who draw on benefits, leaving many feeling the system distrusts them and no closer to equal employment opportunities”.
He added: “Although the Government attempts to justify increased sanctions by claiming that disabled people can work from home, we know that home-working options are not always available and not suitable for everyone.
“Disabled people are already over-represented in roles that do not involve home working, especially in retail and social care, as the census data shows.
“Wider statistics also show only one in ten jobs advertised this year offered homeworking as an option.
“Digital exclusion disproportionately affects disabled people, and for some a lack of access to assistive technology is a further barrier to homeworking.”

Care workers and home carers is the second most common occupation (14.6% identifying as disabled, or 124,885 people), followed by cleaners and domestics (12.7% or 75,485) and warehouse operatives (8.1%, or 38,265 people).
A DWP spokesperson said: “We know disabled people and those with health conditions face additional barriers in the workplace.
“That is why we are investing £2.5 billion as part of our Back to Work Plan, including through an expanded Universal Support scheme which places people into jobs and provides wraparound care to give the best chance of success in a role.
“We are also offering existing health claimants a ‘Chance to Work Guarantee’, allowing people to try work without fear of losing their benefits, alongside our Back to Work Plan which will support up to 1.1 million people with long-term health conditions, disabilities or long-term unemployment to look for and stay in work.”
