Google Classroom: Creating Assignments and Materials
Lesson 2: creating assignments and materials.
/en/google-classroom/getting-started-with-google-classroom/content/
Creating assignments and materials
Google Classroom gives you the ability to create and assign work for your students, all without having to print anything. Questions , essays , worksheets , and readings can all be distributed online and made easily available to your class. If you haven't created a class already, check out our Getting Started with Google Classroom lesson.
Watch the video below to learn more about creating assignments and materials in Google Classroom.
Creating an assignment
Whenever you want to create new assignments, questions, or material, you'll need to navigate to the Classwork tab.

In this tab, you can create assignments and view all current and past assignments. To create an assignment, click the Create button, then select Assignment . You can also select Question if you'd like to pose a single question to your students, or Material if you simply want to post a reading, visual, or other supplementary material.

This will bring up the Assignment form. Google Classroom offers considerable flexibility and options when creating assignments.
Click the buttons in the interactive below to become familiar with the Assignment form.

This is where you'll type the title of the assignment you're creating.
Instructions
If you'd like to include instructions with your assignment, you can type them here.
Here, you can decide how many points an assignment is worth by typing the number in the form. You can also click the drop-down arrow to select Ungraded if you don't want to grade an assignment.
You can select a due date for an assignment by clicking this arrow and selecting a date from the calendar that appears. Students will have until then to submit their work.
In Google Classroom, you can sort your assignments and materials into topics. This menu allows you to select an existing topic or create a new one to place an assignment under.
Attachments
You can attach files from your computer , files from Google Drive , URLs , and YouTube videos to your assignments.
Google Classroom gives you the option of sending assignments to all students or a select number .
Once you're happy with the assignment you've created, click Assign . The drop-down menu also gives you the option to Schedule an assignment if you'd like it to post it at a later date.
You can attach a rubric to help students know your expectations for the assignment and to give them feedback.
Once you've completed the form and clicked Assign , your students will receive an email notification letting them know about the assignment.
Google Classroom takes all of your assignments and automatically adds them to your Google Calendar. From the Classwork tab, you can click Google Calendar to pull this up and get a better overall view of the timeline for your assignments' due dates.

Using Google Docs with assignments
When creating an assignment, there may often be times when you want to attach a document from Google Docs. These can be helpful when providing lengthy instructions, study guides, and other material.
When attaching these types of files, you'll want to make sure to choose the correct setting for how your students can interact with it . After attaching one to an assignment, you'll find a drop-down menu with three options.

Let's take a look at when you might want to use each of these:
- Students can view file : Use this option if the file is simply something you want your students to view but not make any changes to.
- Students can edit file : This option can be helpful if you're providing a document you want your students to collaborate on or fill out collectively.
- Make a copy for each student : If you're creating a worksheet or document that you want each student to complete individually, this option will create a separate copy of the same document for every student.
Using topics
On the Classwork tab, you can use topics to sort and group your assignments and material. To create a topic, click the Create button, then select Topic .

Topics can be helpful for organizing your content into the various units you teach throughout the year. You could also use it to separate your content by type , splitting it into homework, classwork, readings, and other topic areas.

In our next lesson , we'll explore how to create quizzes and worksheets with Google Forms, further expanding how you can use Google Classroom with your students.

It is common for students of institutes and universities to get a task as a written assignment for a page or two. This academic type of work is widespread in the subjects of literature, history, or philosophy, but students of other specialties usually have to complete them too. For many, this becomes a real difficulty because not everyone has the talent for writing. In addition, even having decent knowledge in the field does not mean a well-executed written assignment.

How to Structure an Assignment?
To cope with assignments, you should familiarize yourself with the tips on formatting and presenting assignments or any written paper, which are given below. It is worth paying attention to the content of the paper, making it structured and understandable so that ideas are not lost and thoughts do not refute each other.
If the topic is free or you can choose from the given list — be sure to choose the one you understand best. Especially if that could affect your semester score or scholarship. It is important to select an engaging title that is contextualized within your topic. A topic that should captivate you or at least give you a general sense of what is needed there. It’s easier to dwell upon what interests you, so the process goes faster.
To construct an assignment structure, use outlines. These are pieces of text that relate to your topic. It can be ideas, quotes, all your thoughts, or disparate arguments. Type in everything that you think about. Separate thoughts scattered across the sheets of Word will help in the next step.
Then it is time to form the text. At this stage, you have to form a coherent story from separate pieces, where each new thought reinforces the previous one, and one idea smoothly flows into another.
Main Steps of Assignment Writing
These are steps to take to get a worthy paper. If you complete these step-by-step, your text will be among the most exemplary ones.
The research part
If the topic is unique and no one has written about it yet, look at materials close to this topic to gain thoughts about it. You should feel that you are ready to express your thoughts. Also, while reading, get acquainted with the format of the articles, study the details, collect material for your thoughts, and accumulate different points of view for your article. Be careful at this stage, as the process can help you develop your ideas. If you are already struggling here, pay for assignment to be done , and it will be processed in a split second via special services. These services are especially helpful when the deadline is near as they guarantee fast delivery of high-quality papers on any subject.
If you use Google to search for material for your assignment, you will, of course, find a lot of information very quickly. Still, the databases available on your library’s website will give you the clearest and most reliable facts that satisfy your teacher or professor. Be sure you copy the addresses of all the web pages you will use when composing your paper, so you don’t lose them. You can use them later in your bibliography if you add a bit of description! Select resources and extract quotes from them that you can use while working. At this stage, you may also create a request for late assignment if you realize the paper requires a lot of effort and is time-consuming. This way, you’ll have a backup plan if something goes wrong.
Planning your text
Assemble a layout. It may be appropriate to use the structure of the paper of some outstanding scientists in your field and argue it in one of the parts. As the planning progresses, you can add suggestions that come to mind. If you use citations that require footnotes, and if you use single spacing throughout the paper and double spacing at the end, it will take you a very long time to make sure that all the citations are on the exact pages you specified! Add a reference list or bibliography. If you haven’t already done so, don’t put off writing an essay until the last day. It will be more difficult to do later as you will be stressed out because of time pressure.
Writing major parts
It happens that there is simply no mood or strength to get started and zero thoughts. In that case, postpone this process for 2-3 hours, and, perhaps, soon, you will be able to start with renewed vigor. Writing essays is a great (albeit controversial) way to improve your skills. This experience will not be forgotten. It will certainly come in handy and bring many benefits in the future. Do your best here because asking for an extension is not always possible, so you probably won’t have time to redo it later. And the quality of this part defines the success of the whole paper.
Writing the major part does not mean the matter is finished. To review the text, make sure that the ideas of the introduction and conclusion coincide because such a discrepancy is the first thing that will catch the reader’s eye and can spoil the impression. Add or remove anything from your intro to edit it to fit the entire paper. Also, check your spelling and grammar to ensure there are no typos or draft comments. Check the sources of your quotes so that your it is honest and does not violate any rules. And do not forget the formatting rules.
with the right tips and guidance, it can be easier than it looks. To make the process even more straightforward, students can also use an assignment service to get the job done. This way they can get professional assistance and make sure that their assignments are up to the mark. At PapersOwl, we provide a professional writing service where students can order custom-made assignments that meet their exact requirements.

Expert Tips for your Writing Assignment
Want to write like a pro? Here’s what you should consider:
- Save the document! Send the finished document by email to yourself so you have a backup copy in case your computer crashes.
- Don’t wait until the last minute to complete a list of citations or a bibliography after the paper is finished. It will be much longer and more difficult, so add to them as you go.
- If you find a lot of information on the topic of your search, then arrange it in a separate paragraph.
- If possible, choose a topic that you know and are interested in.
- Believe in yourself! If you set yourself up well and use your limited time wisely, you will be able to deliver the paper on time.
- Do not copy information directly from the Internet without citing them.

How to change file associations in Windows 10

Changing one file type
Changing any and all, alternative options.
If you've ever run into the problem of Windows trying to open up a file in entirely the wrong application, you're not alone. Although you can get around it using the "Open With" command, there is a way to make sure you don't have to do that every time: Learn how to change file associations.
What You Need
If you aren’t sure which file type you want to change the association of, right-click your desired file and click Properties from the resulting menu. Look for Type of File at the top of the window. The three-letter designation next to that is its file type . You can do it on an individual file-type basis or change all of them from one location.
The quickest method to change a single file type is to do it from the Open With menu. If you want to change more than one file type at a time, skip to the next section.
Step 1: Right-click on a file of the type you wish to change the association for.
Step 2: Select Open With from the resulting menu.

Step 3: Windows will then offer you an app or a list of apps that can act as the default for that file type. If you see the one you want, select it, and Windows will open that file in the app you’ve chosen.
Step 4: If you don’t see your preferred app, then from the menu that appears when you select Open With , either search for one by selecting the Search the Microsoft Store option or click Choose Another App for an expanded list of already-installed applications.
Step 5: When you’ve found the app you want and it has been selected, simply click the gray OK button. You can also tick the box labeled Always Use This App to Open [Type of File] Files before you hit the OK button if you want that app to open all files of that type going forward.
Step 6: From now on, any files of that type will be opened with your chosen application.
If you want to change a few different file types — or even all of them — then the Settings menu is the best place to go.
Step 1: Press the Windows + X keys and click Settings from the resulting menu. Alternatively, search for Settings in the Windows search bar and click the relevant result.
Step 2: Select Apps from the list of options.
Step 3: Click Default Apps from the left-hand menu.
Step 4: Scroll down if needed, and click Choose Default Apps by File Type .
Step 5: You’ll then be presented with a list of all of the file types Windows 10 supports, with their associated applications on the right-hand side. If a file type doesn’t have a particular application set up to handle it, there will be a gray plus sign (+) icon instead.
Step 6: Scroll through the list to find the file type you want to change the file association for. Click the application or Plus icon to its right.
Step 7: Choose your preferred application from the list that appears and click its corresponding icon. In the case of some file types, there will be multiple options, whereas others may have none.
There are two other avenues available should you not find an offered option. Either download a compatible application from the web or select the Look for an App in the Microsoft Store option, which brings you to the Microsoft Store.
Note: In some cases, the Microsoft Store may not return any results for relevant applications for a particular file type, or it may return search results that aren’t relevant. If this happens to you, you have to decide which app will work with the file type you want to change.
Once you’ve chosen your preferred application, you’re all set. This simple change has successfully reset the default application for your targeted file type; now this program will consistently open when you select a certain type of file.
If you find that you need to change back to the original application, you can use the steps above to get back to the default settings. Alternatively, you can go to the Default Apps section of the Windows 10 Settings menu as we did before, scroll down, and then click on the Reset button located under the phrase Reset to the Microsoft Recommended Defaults .

Creating and Completing Assignments
Assignments transfer information and responsibility for task execution to the correct person. Assignments can be used, for instance, to request a colleague to look over a proposal before it is sent to the customer.
Assignments can be included in a workflow, or they can be independent. For more information on automatic assignments included in workflows, refer to Assign to user .
Video: Creating and Completing Assignments
To submit a new assignment, create a new Assignment object. Because assignments are objects, you can define the same assignment for several objects. Or, inversely, add several different objects to the same assignment. For example, you can assign several drafts to a colleague for inspection with a single assignment.
Because the assignments are separate objects, they have their own version history and permissions. For this reason, the document and assignment included in it can have separate permissions, and therefore only a user who has reading rights to the document can mark the assignment completed. The user does not need to have rights to edit the document, meaning that users with a read-only license to M-Files can also mark the assignment completed.
You have three ways to create an assignment:
- Create an assignment and add objects to it either by dragging and dropping or by using the Add File function from the context menu.
- Select one or more documents and select Assignment from the Create menu.
- Create an assignment without adding an object to it and define the entire task in the description field of the assignment.

Assignment description
Add a free-form description of the task. The assignment notice by email displays the description to the person to whom the task was assigned.
Assigned to
Select the persons you wish to assign the task to. You can add more users by clicking the plus button (+) on the toolbar. Whenever an assignment is a separate object, all persons to whom the task was assigned must mark the assignment as complete before it is switched to the "complete" state.
If desired, you can select a deadline for the assignment. The user gets an automatic reminder if he has not marked the assignment as completed when the deadline is approaching. The reminder will be sent using a common notification rule which can be deleted by the administrator.
The deadline can also be useful for creating views. The administrator or user can create a view to display objects whose deadline is approaching. For more information about views, refer to Creating a View .
Monitored by
You can use the Monitored by field to define the users you wish to notify every time a task is marked as complete. The person submitting the assignment is automatically defined as a task monitor as soon as the object is saved for the first time. Once the property has been automatically or manually added to the metadata card, you can change or add more monitors by clicking the plus button (+) on the toolbar.
Mark as complete icon
You can mark the assignment complete by clicking the icon next to the Assigned to field.

- Optional: Write a comment to the Comment field.
- Click OK to close the Mark Complete dialog.
- Optional: Depending on the workflow settings of the assignment, you may still need to add an electronic signature to authorize the assignment completion.
Completing an Approval Assignment
Once you have been given an approval assignment, you have to complete the tasks associated with the assignment and mark the assignment either approved or rejected to indicate that you, the task assignee, either approve or reject the target of the assignment. You could mark an assignment rejected, for instance, if you consider the target document to be unpublishable.
- On the metadata card, click either the ✓ or X icon next to your name in the Assigned to field. or
- In the task area , select View and Modify > Mark Approved/Rejected . or
- Right-click the assignment and select Workflow > Mark Approved/Rejected .
- Optional: Depending on the workflow settings of the assignment, you may still need to add an electronic signature to authorize the operation.

What to Know
- Win11: Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose defaults by file type > choose program.
- The whole process takes less than five minutes.
- Setting a program's default file association does not restrict other programs that support the file type from working.
This article explains the easy steps below to change a file type's program association in Windows. Instructions apply to Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP.

How to Change File Associations in Windows 11
Windows can only open one program for a particular file extension automatically, so if you like to work with your PNG files in Photoshop Elements, for example, and not Paint, changing the default file association for PNG files is required.
The Choose defaults by file type option is found in the Windows 11 Settings.
Right-click the Start button (or use the WIN+X keyboard shortcut) and select Settings . The hotkey WIN+i works, too.
Select Apps from the left panel, and then Default apps from the right.
Scroll to the very bottom, and select Choose defaults by file type .
Click or tap one of the file types in the list.
Pick a program from the pop-up list, or choose Look for an app in the Microsoft Store .
Select OK to save. From now on, Windows will now open that program when you open a file with that extension from File Explorer.
How to Change File Associations in Windows 10
Like Windows 11, Windows 10 uses Settings instead of Control Panel to make changes to file type associations.
Right-click the Start button (or use the WIN+X hotkey) and choose Settings .
Select Apps from the list.
Choose Default apps on the left.
Scroll down a little and select Choose default apps by file type .
Locate the file extension for which you want to change the default program.
If you're not sure what extension the file is using, open File Explorer to find the file and use the View > File name extensions option to show file extensions.
In the Choose default apps by file type window, select the program to the right of the file extension. If there isn't one listed, select Choose a default instead.
In the Choose an app pop-up window, pick a new program to associate with that file extension. If there isn't one listed that you want to use, try Look for an app in the Store .
Windows 10 will now open the program you chose each time you open a file with that extension from File Explorer.
When you're done, you can close any windows you opened to make these changes.
How to Change File Associations in Windows 8, 7, or Vista
Open Control Panel . In Windows 8, the Power User Menu ( WIN+X ) is the quickest way. Use the Start menu in Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
Select Programs .
You'll only see this link if you're on the Category or Control Panel Home view of Control Panel. Otherwise, choose Default Programs instead, followed by Associate a file type or protocol with a program link. Skip to Step 4.
Choose Default Programs .
Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program on the following page.
Once the Set Associations tool loads, which should only take a second or two, scroll down the list until you see the file extension that you want to change the default program for.
If you're not sure what extension the file in question has, right-click it (or tap-and-hold) the file, go to Properties , and look for the file extension in the "Type of file" line of the General tab.
Select the file extension to highlight it.
Choose the Change program button, located just above the scroll bar.
What you see next, and the next step to take, depends on what version of Windows you're using .
Windows 8: From the "How do you want to open this type of file [file extension]?" window you see now, look through the list and select the program you'd like to open when you double-click or double-tap these types of files. Try More options for the complete list.
Windows 7 & Vista: From the "Open with" window that popped up, look through the programs listed and choose the one you'd like to open for this extension. The Recommended Programs are probably the most applicable, but there may be Other Programs listed, too. Use Browse to manually locate a program.
Select OK if you see it, and Windows will refresh the list of file associations to show the new default program assigned to this file type. You can close the Set Associations window if you're done making changes.
From this point forward, when you double-click or double-tap on any file with this particular file extension, the program you chose to associate with it in Step 8 will automatically launch and load the particular file.
How to Change File Associations in Windows XP
If you still have Windows XP, the instructions are different newer operating systems.
Go to Start > Control Panel to open Control Panel.
Choose Appearance and Themes .
You'll only see that link if you're using the Category View of Control Panel. If you're instead using the Classic View , choose Folder Options instead and then skip to Step 4.
Select Folder Options near the bottom of the window.
Open the File Types tab.
Under Registered file types , scroll down until you find the file extension that you want to change the default program association for.
Choose the extension to highlight it.
Select Change in the lower section.
From the Open With screen that you're now looking at, choose the program you'd like to open the file type with by default.
If you don't see that screen, choose Select the program from a list , and then OK .
The most common programs that support this particular file type will be listed under the Recommended Programs or Programs list, but there may be other programs that support the file as well, in which case you can manually select one with the Browse button.
Select OK and then Close back on the Folder Options window. You can also close any Control Panel or Appearance and Themes windows that might still be open.
Going forward, any time you open a file with the extension you chose back on Step 6, the program you chose in Step 8 will be opened automatically and the file will be loaded within that program.
More About Changing File Associations
Changing a program's file association doesn't mean that another supporting program can't open the file, it just means that it won't be the program that opens when you double-tap or double-click on those types of files.
To use another program with the file, you'll just need to start that other program manually first , and then browse your computer for the particular file to open it. For example, you can open Microsoft Word and use its File > Open menu to open a DOC file that is normally associated with OpenOffice Writer, but doing so doesn't actually change the file association for DOC files as explained above.
Also, changing the file association doesn't change the file type . To change the file type is to change the structure of the data so that it can be considered to exist in a different format. Changing the file's type/format is usually done with a file conversion tool .
To zip a file in Windows 10 , open File Explorer, then right-click the file and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder .
Whether you want to troubleshoot an issue or edit the HOSTS file , use File Explorer to locate the file. HOSTS can be found at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.

Start, revise & submit assignments
To start your assignment, you first need to link your Google Account to Assignments. You can then open your assignment and, when you are finished, submit it for grading. If you edit your work before the due date, you can resubmit your assignment.
You can attach any file type from Google Drive or your hard drive to your assignment, including:
- Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides
- Microsoft ®️ Word ®️ , Excel ®️ , or PowerPoint ®️
- Image files
- Video files (WEBM, MPEG4, 3GPP, MOV, AVI, MPEG-PS, WMV, FLV, OGG)
Assignments automatically converts Microsoft Office ®️ files to Google Docs, then saves the files to the Assignments folder in your Google Drive.
Complete an assignment
Link your google account to assignments for the course.
The first time you use Google Assignments in a course, you link the Google Account you want to use with that course with your LMS account.
Linking your Google Account to Assignments allows it to:
- Access your Google Drive to attach files to your assignments.
- Archive copies of your submissions.
- Create an Assignments folder in your Drive that organizes files by course and assignment.
To link your account:
- Go to your LMS.
- Open the assignment.
- Sign in with your Google Account.
- If it's your first time using Assignments for the course, link your Google Account to the course.
Attach files to an assignment
Important: If your assignment is set up to grade with your LMS’s grader tool, there’s a 10 MB size limit per file.
You can attach up to 20 files to your assignment.
- To upload a new file, click Create and select a file type.
Turn in an assignment
- When you turn in an assignment, a copy is saved to your Google Drive in the Assignments folder.
- Ownership of your original file transfers to your instructor when it is graded and you can't edit your file.
- You regain ownership of your file when your instructor returns your work.
- You will never lose ownership of your files.
- Work that has been submitted to the instructor is not unsubmitted.
- The instructor sees a time stamp of the most recent submission.
After your instructor grades and returns your work, you regain ownership of your file.
Note : If you resubmit files, the instructor sees a time stamp of the most recent submission.
Unsubmit an assignment
Important: This only applies to assignments graded with Google Assignments.
If your assignment has a due date, you can unsubmit your work before the due date. Be sure to resubmit your work before the due date, so it’s not marked late. After the due date, you can’t unsubmit your work.
If your assignment doesn’t have a due date, you can unsubmit your work at any time. Be sure to check with your instructor for specific requirements.
- Open your assignment.

I made a GPT, a custom version of OpenAI's ChatGPT, and it only took me 15 minutes. Here's how.
- In early November, OpenAI unveiled GPTs, customizable versions of its AI chatbot ChatGPT.
- GPTs can be customized to focus on specific tasks like coding, creative writing, and tech support.
- It took Business Insider's Aaron Mok only 15 minutes to make a GPT, with satisfactory results.

You can now create your own version of OpenAI's ChatGPT — and it can take as little as 15 minutes.
In early November, OpenAI unveiled a slate of updates to its conversational AI chatbot, one of which includes GPTs — spinoff versions of ChatGPT that users who pay for ChatGPT Plus can build to perform specific tasks like coding, creative writing, and tech support.
The aim for GPTs, according to OpenAI, is for users to create tailored versions of ChatGPT that can be more helpful in their personal and professional lives than the basic, generalist version of ChatGPT .
After all, anybody can build a GPT since no coding skills are required. Users can simply prompt the chatbot with instructions written in plain English on what they want the AI to look like, and the AI creates itself accordingly.
Less than a month after GPTs came out, curious ChatGPT users have jumped on the opportunity to play around with the feature. Some went to X , formerly known as Twitter, to share links to their custom AI chatbots that purport to do things like code websites , conduct research, and even turn photos of humans into Pixar characters.
But not everyone is excited about GPTs. After OpenAI announced its upgrades to ChatGPT, some founders expressed concerns that OpenAI will kill their AI startups as the capabilities of the AI giant's language models continue to reach new heights.
To understand how intuitive and powerful GPT can be, Business Insider made a GPT of a personal chef who specializes in high-protein recipes.
Here's how to create a GPT.
1) Open ChatGPT, then press the "Explore" button located on the left sidebar. Click "Create a GPT" on the right to begin.
2) Write a prompt in the message box to the left telling GPT Builder what you want it to do.
3) Once you enter the prompt, GPT Builder will spend a couple seconds generating the GPT. It will suggest a name for the custom chatbot, as well as a picture, both of which can be tweaked with additional prompts until you're satisfied.
4) GPT Builder will then ask you to refine the context with specifics on what you want the chatbot to do.
5) After the GPT is generated, ask the chatbot questions to test its capabilities. Adjust the chatbot by feeding it more queries based on its responses.
Final takeaways
Overall, making a GPT is straightforward. The GPT builder gave me clear, step-by-step instructions on how to build the chatbot, which sped up the process. It took me around 15 minutes to create a GPT that met my expectations.
I was also impressed by the GPTs answers. The chatbot responds to queries like "What are some affordable, high-protein snacks?" and "Make me a recipe that has 40 grams of protein and takes less than 20 minutes to make," in great detail.
However, the chatbot isn't perfect. When I asked the GPT to include pictures along with the recipes, the photos didn't appear in subsequent recipes it generated. Additional prompting was required.
Nevertheless, I can see regular people making GPTs in an effort to automate time-consuming tasks. But if you don't have the patience to spend time tweaking the AI chatbot to your liking, you might as well stick to the free version of ChatGPT, as it will provide similar results.
