I like small or mini-projects using simple and low cost. Like diodes, transistors, digital electronics ICs and more.

Imagine you need a LED flasher circuit. You have many choices to do. first, transistors circuit. Second, 555 timer version. And later, Arduino.

Which is better? For me, Easy and cheap is better. I pick the transistor version first. Then, IC-555 or op-amp. For Arduino is so expensive for only LED blink.

Who is suitable for these? …

Inverters don’t supply enough current for the compressor to run properly. Fan motor in evaporator section is probably the motor being heard.

Perhaps in the new year you design a variable “voltage/Current” 240V ac and say 1A power supply with panel meters as well, I cannot remember the make but the usa has one but it was for their voltage only “120V ac” (was the make sencore or something). I do a little repair work ” as a hobby mostly) and i have a nice 30V 10A dc power supply but nothing for the mains side but i do use an isolation transformer.

This article is a collection of simple electronics circuits we have published over a span of 3 years, which can be used as simple electronics projects for students, beginners, engineering students and other hobbyists. The following circuits listed below can also be used for your mini project needs. But we won’t recommend any of these circuits for your final year or main project requirements.

While selecting the circuits for this article, we have taken care to serve you with popular circuits on our website which are easy to implement.

We suggest you go through all the comments before practically testing any of these circuits which will save you a lot of troubleshooting time.

All of these circuits fall into the basic or small or hobby category and that’s why we used simple electronics projects as the title. And all these circuits are free of any patents and any other legal stuff; you can experiment with them at your own free will and creativity.

So here begins the list:-

1. Simple Water Level Indicator

Objective:- To measure the level of any conductive non-corrosive liquid.

We selected this circuit first because of its simple nature. This water level indicator circuit is easy to implement and is composed of the least components. You only need 5 transistors, 5 resistors and 5 LEDs to implement this circuit; which makes it an ideal simple electronics project for beginners and students.

2. Automatic LED Emergency Light

Objective:- Implement a Lighting system/device using LED’s

This is another popular circuit that can be used for simple project development. There are 3 versions available. One is developed by the CircuitsToday team and the other by Seetharaman Subrahmanian (a great contributor of CircuitsToday). Links are given to other similar circuit applications like LED ramp circuit, street light circuit, flashing led circuit etc.

3. Infrared Motion detector

Objective:- Detect Infrared rays. This circuit idea can be modified to design simple projects like Intruder alarm, Anti-theft systems etc.

A circuit application that everyone must try out. This circuit will teach you how to deal with infrared detection (transmitting and receiving), usage of 555 IC as a monostable multivibrator inside an application, usage of ICs like LM 1458 etc.

4. 7 segment counter project

Objective:- Learn the application of 7 segment display. (This circuit will teach you how to use 7 segment display for your future applications)

A simple electronic circuit that uses two ICs – NE 555 (as an astable multivibrator to trigger CD 4033 IC) and CD 4033 for counting purposes. Apart from two ICs and a 7 segment display (LT 543), the circuit uses a minimal set of components, 4 resistors, 1 capacitor and a diode.

5. Fire Alarm Project

Objective:- Detect fire in a given area and warn using an alarm system.

Though simple in nature this circuit will help you to understand how real-world electronics systems are built. This circuit is a basic one that senses smoke to detect fire and hence produce an alarm to warn people around. It uses an LDR to detect smoke (By default LDR is kept active by a light fall; smoke will mask the light and hence LDR resistance will increase), IC UM 66 as a tone generator, IC 7805 to drive tone generator IC and TDA 2003 IC as an amplifier to drive the speakers (alarm system).

6. Lead-acid battery charger

Objective:- To charge a battery.

So why not try your hands at charging a lead-acid battery? Here is a simple electronics project that will let you charge your battery. This circuit is very simple in nature which consists of an LM317 IC (which provides correct charging voltage), a couple of resistors, capacitors and a potentiometer.

7.   Simple 10 Watt Audio Amplifier

Objective:- To design a 10-watt audio amplifier.

How can we avoid audio electronics projects? So let’s start our audio electronics journey with a simple audio amplifier project. As written in the objective, our aim is to design and implement a simple audio amplifier using IC TL081 (as a preamplifier). A much advanced audio amplifier project is given below.

8.   150 Watt Amplifier circuit

Objective:- To design an amplifier circuit and deliver 150 watt RMS to a 4-ohm speaker.

The first thing to mention is; above given project is the most popular circuit on CircuitsToday with live discussions going on (so far 563+ comments). We recommend you to g through all comments section to understand various problems faced by our readers while implementing this circuit. This will help you in your troubleshooting phase. So let us talk a little about this circuit. This is the cheapest 150-watt amplifier you can make using a pair of Darlington transistors TIP 142 and 147.  You have to go through the circuit design and description carefully as it will take a little bit of effort to get the desired output.

9. Simple Inverter Project

Objective:- To design a  simple 100-watt Inverter.

This is a simple low-cost inverter circuit that comprises IC CD 4047 and two MOSFET’s IR540 as its main components. This circuit will teach you the basics of the common application we always use in building electronics devices.

10. FM Transmitter project

Objective:- To design an FM transmitter circuit that can transmit signals up to 2 kilometres.

How about designing a local FM station for your college? A station where students can air their programs (songs, speeches, solos) and all your college mates can receive them? Here is such an interesting project.  This is a low-cost project which can be assembled using basic components.

1. water level controller using 8051 microcontroller .

Well, this is a fully functional water level controller made using an AT89S51 (8051 compliant IC from Atmel) microcontroller from Atmel. This water level controller monitors the level of the overhead tank and automatically switches on the water pump whenever the level goes below a preset limit.

2. Voltmeter using 8051 Microcontroller

This is another simple project using 8051 microcontrollers, made using the same AT89S51 IC from Atmel. With this circuit, you can measure voltages in the range of 0 to 5 volts.

3.  250W PWM inverter circuit 

The objective of this project is to build a 250W inverter circuit using the IC SG3524. You have already seen above our project for creating a 100W inverter but this one is more difficult.

4. Simple function generator

A function generator is used to generate electrical waveforms of different frequencies. The most common waves this generated are sine waves, square waves and triangular waves.

5. Digital Thermometer

You know the function of a digital thermometer, it measures the temperature of a body and displays the output in a human-readable form. This circuit uses a 3 digit display to show the output. The temperature is sensed via contact using the LM35 temperature sensor.

6. DC Motor Speed Control Using Arduino & PWM

This project is about how you can control the speed of a DC motor using an Arduino UNO board. You will also learn, what is Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) and how you can use PWM on the Arduino UNO board. 

7. Water Level Indicator Using Arduino & Ultrasonic Sensor

This is another project based on Arduino. In this project, you will learn, how you can make a simple water level indicator using an ultrasonic sensor, LCD and Arduino UNO boards. 

8. Interface common anode and common cathode RGB LEDs with Arduino

You all must have seen RGB LEDs at some point in your life. Have you ever wondered how these RGB LEDs works and how you can generate different colours using a single RGB LED? In this project, you will be learning all this. You will create a circuit using an Arduino UNO board that will control the RGB LED.

9. Arduino and BMP180 Pressure Sensor Interfacing

This is a very simple project. This project is all about how to interface a BMP180 pressure sensor with Arduino. You will also learn its working and find out the atmospheric pressure around you. Based on that atmospheric pressure you will be able to find your altitude. 

10. How to make a Digital Watch using an 0.96 inch OLED Display

An OLED is a display that can be used to display anything. You can use this display in any kind of project. Not only your projects will look cool by using this display but also you will be able to display a lot more information on it as compared to 16×2 LCD. In this project, you will be building a simple digital clock that will display the date, day and time.

In this fire alarm circuit, a Thermistor works as the heat sensor. When temperature increases, its resistance decreases, and vice versa. At normal temperature, the resistance of the Thermistor (TH1) is approximately 10 kilo-ohms, which reduces to a few ohms as the temperature increases beyond 100 C. The circuit uses readily available components and can be easily constructed on any general-purpose PCB. ________________________________________

Circuit Operation:

Timer IC NE555 (IC1) is wired as an astable multivibrator oscillating in audio frequency band. Switching transistors Q1 and Q2 drive multivibrator IC1. The output of IC1 is connected to NPN transistor Q3, which drives the loudspeaker (SPKR) to generate sound. The frequency of IC1 depends on the values of resistors R6, R7 and capacitor C2. When Thermistor TH1 becomes hot, it provides a low-resistance path to extend positive voltage to the base of transistor Q1 via diode D2 and resistor R3. Capacitor C1 charges up to the positive voltage and increases the ‘on’ time of alarm. The higher the value of capacitor C1, the higher the forward voltage applied to the base of transistor Q1. Since the collector of transistor Q1 is connected to the base of transistor Q2, transistor Q2 provides positive voltage to reset pin 4 of IC1. R5 is used such that IC1 remains inactive in the absence of positive voltage. D2 stops discharging of capacitor C1 when the Thermistor connected to the positive supply cools down and provides a high-resistance (10k) path. It also stops the conduction of Q1. To prevent the Thermistor from melting, wrap it up in mica tape. The circuit works off a 6V-12V regulated power supply. D1 is used to indicate that power to the circuit is switched on.

To help you solve this problem, you can create your own rain alarm. The system will detect rain and activate an alarm or notification. This way, you would be more prepared and you can bring your tools and equipment inside just in time.            

The materials needed for making this project are rather simple. You just need a rain sensor, power supply, breadboard , LED, a buzzer (optional), a few resistors and capacitors, and so on. You can easily buy these materials online or in any electronic store for a cheap price.

Auto Night Lamp

Similar to your phone’s screen to automatically adjusting its brightness when it is dark. You can also archive the same with any night lamp. This night lamp project would automatically switch on when it is nighttime and automatically turns off when it is daylight.

Apart from that, it is a simple project to test your knowledge of circuit diagrams. It is an easy project that does not require a lot of tools and the materials needed are relatively cheaper.

You can use a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) Thermistor for this fire alarm in order to measure the ambient temperature. You can use a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) for this DIY project as well. Rather than detecting fire through an NTC thermistor, you can use an LDR instead. NTC thermistor detects fire through changes in the ambient temperature while LDR detects fire through smoke.

Alarm Circuit for Fire with Low Cost

This project is used to detect fire and generates an alarm. Therefore, it gives an alert to the people where it is connected in the building. A BC177 transistor is used to detect the temperature generated because of the fire. A preset level can be set aside for the transistor. Once the temperature increases beyond the fixed level, then the leakage current from the transistor increases, therefore other transistors within the circuit can function. This circuit uses a relay for switching the bell load. The components used for the circuit can be attained simply & this circuit is very simple to design.

FM Radio Circuit with Single Chip

This is a simple project mainly applicable to engineering students. A TDA7000 IC is used in this circuit with an FLL (Frequency-Locked-Loop) system with a 70 kHz frequency. This circuit is very simple to design and low cost.

Wireless Lock System through OTP

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today urged taxpayers to take important actions now to help them file their 2023 federal income tax return next year.

This is the second in a series of reminders to help taxpayers get ready for the upcoming filing season. The Get ready page on IRS.gov outlines steps taxpayers can take now to make filing easier in 2024.

Here's what's new and what to consider before filing next year.

IRS Online Account enhancements

Taxpayers and Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) holders can now access their Online Account and view, approve and electronically sign power of attorney and tax information authorizations from their tax professional.

With an Online Account, individuals can also:

  • View their tax owed and payment history and schedule payments.
  • Request tax transcripts.
  • View or apply for payment plans.
  • See digital copies of some IRS notices.
  • View key data from their most recently filed tax return, including adjusted gross income.
  • Validate bank accounts and save multiple accounts, eliminating the need to re-enter bank account information every time they make a payment.

Avoid refund delays and understand refund timing

Many different factors can affect the timing of a refund after the IRS receives a tax return. Although the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on receiving a 2023 federal tax refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills. Some returns may require additional review and may take longer to process if IRS systems detect a possible error, the return is missing information or there is suspected identity theft or fraud.

Also, the IRS cannot issue refunds for people claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. The law requires the IRS to hold the entire refund – not just the portion associated with the EITC or ACTC. The IRS expects most EITC and ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by Feb. 27, 2024, if the taxpayer chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return.

Last quarterly payment for 2023 is due on Jan. 16, 2024

Taxpayers may need to consider estimated or additional tax payments due to non-wage income from unemployment, self-employment, annuity income or even digital assets. The Tax Withholding Estimator on IRS.gov can help wage earners determine if there's a need to consider an additional tax payment to avoid an unexpected tax bill when they file.

Gather 2023 tax documents

Taxpayers should develop a record keeping system − electronic or paper − that keeps important information in one place. This includes year-end income documents like Forms W-2 from employers, Forms 1099 from banks or other payers, Forms 1099-K from third party payment networks, Forms 1099-NEC for nonemployee compensation, Forms 1099-MISC for miscellaneous income or Forms 1099-INT for interest paid, as well as records documenting all digital asset transactions.

When they have all their documentation, taxpayers are in the best position to file an accurate return and avoid processing or refund delays.

1099-K reporting threshold delayed

Following feedback from taxpayers, tax professionals and payment processors and to reduce taxpayer confusion, the IRS delayed the new $600 Form 1099-K reporting threshold for third party settlement organizations for calendar year 2023.

As the IRS continues to work to implement the new law, the agency will treat 2023 as an additional transition year. This will reduce the potential confusion caused by the distribution of Forms 1099-K sent to many taxpayers who wouldn't expect one and may not have a tax obligation. As a result, reporting will not be required unless the taxpayer receives over $20,000 and has more than 200 transactions in 2023.

Given the complexity of the new provision and the large number of individual taxpayers affected, the IRS is planning for a threshold of $5,000 for tax year 2024 as part of a phase-in to implement the $600 reporting threshold enacted under the American Rescue Plan (ARP).

It is important for taxpayers to understand why they received a Form 1099-K , then use the form and their other records to help figure and report their correct income on their tax return. It is also important for taxpayers to know what to do if they received a Form 1099-K but shouldn't have .

There's no change to the taxability of income. All income, including from part-time work, side jobs or the sale of goods is still taxable. Taxpayers must report all income on their tax return unless it's excluded by law, whether they receive a Form 1099-K, a Form 1099-NEC, Form 1099-MISC or any other information return.

Understand energy related credits

Taxpayers who bought a vehicle in 2023 should review the changes under the  Inflation Reduction Act of 2022  to see if they qualify for the credits for new electric vehicles purchased in 2022 or before or the new clean vehicles purchased in 2023 or after . To claim either credit, taxpayers will need to provide the vehicle's VIN and file  Form 8936, Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit , with their tax return.

If taxpayers made energy improvements to their home , tax credits are available for a portion of qualifying expenses. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 expanded the credit amounts and types of qualifying expenses. To claim the credit, taxpayers need to file  Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits , Part II, with their tax return.

Speed tax refunds with direct deposit

Filing electronically and choosing direct deposit is the fastest way for taxpayers to get their tax refund. Direct deposit gives individuals access to their refund faster than a paper check.

Those without a bank account can learn how to open an account at an FDIC insured bank or through the national Credit Union Locator tool . Veterans should see the Veterans Benefits Banking Program for access to financial services at participating banks.

Prepaid debit cards or mobile apps may allow direct deposit of tax refunds. The prepaid debit cards or mobile apps must have routing and account numbers associated with them to enter on the tax return. Check with the mobile app provider or financial institution to confirm which numbers to use.

State’s end-of-year affordable housing bonanza likely to leave dozens of near-ready projects ‘mothballed’

Just in time for Christmas, the Newsom administration is preparing to dole out more than $500 million to build affordable housing, playing Santa to projects that promise to shelter low-wage school employees, veterans, farmworkers, people living on the street and other poor and middle-income Californians. 

Like sleepless children on Christmas Eve, nonprofit developers across California are impatiently waiting to find out who will receive a cut. But everyone already knows that most will be left with empty stockings. 

This is the second year the state’s housing department has bundled the applications for four of its low-cost loan or grant programs for affordable housing development into a “ one-stop shop ” application process culminating in a single nine-digit funding blast around the New Year. 

Competition is even more fierce this year. In July, more than 100 developers backing 240 projects with a total of more than 20,000 proposed units applied to the Housing and Community Development department’s second annual Multifamily Finance Super Notice of Funding Availability — more commonly known by its cutesy shorthand, the “Super NOFA.” 

The total amount requested by these near-ready projects: More than $3.5 billion. The state only has $576 million to award. 

The funding mismatch is even more severe for the state’s premier loan program for affordable rental construction and rehabilitation and the biggest pot of cash up for grab in this funding cycle. For every dollar available from the Multifamily Housing Program more than eleven have been requested. 

For nearly half a decade, the crux of the housing debate in California has centered on whether and how to remove barriers to the construction of new homes. This year state lawmakers churned out dozens of bills reining in “not in my backyard” activists, environmental litigants, local government regulations and other barriers to development in the face of a chronic housing shortage . Affordable housing development has been a particular beneficiary of that streamlining campaign .

Developers and housing advocates say the chasm between state funding available and the sums being requested point to a crucial fact about affordable housing: It’s expensive to build, it doesn’t pay for itself and that financial gap has to be plugged somehow. This fact is likely to shape the housing debate around California’s capitol in 2024. 

“You cannot streamline your way out of this crisis,” said Ben Winter, senior vice president at Linc Housing in Long Beach. Linc applied for more than $75 million in low-cost loans for four projects, of which three are still under consideration, according to pre-qualification letters the housing department sent them.  

“There’s a lot of opportunities out there for me to build affordable housing — a lot — because of all these new bills,” he said. “They’ll never get built if we don’t have the funding to back them.”

A calendar on the housing department’s website has the payout scheduled for December 2023 and January 2024. A department spokesperson said they did not have a more specific date.

‘Hoping to win the lottery’

If a developer wants to have any chance of winning the end-of-year funding bonanza, their project has to be pretty far along in the development. In most cases, according to housing developers with projects in the running who spoke to CalMatters, the land has already been secured, zoning issues have been ironed out and the building designs and much of the financing have been assembled. State funding is one of the final pieces of a lengthy and expensive puzzle.

“They’re just waiting to go, they just don’t have the resources,” said Mark Stivers, a lobbyist with the nonprofit California Housing Partnership, which advocates for affordable housing.

State low-cost loans and grants play an especially important role since securing some of that public support vastly improves a project’s chances of securing another: The Low Income Housing Tax Credit, the federal government’s workhorse affordable housing program. 

Projects that don’t make the cut in this year’s funding round may be able to turn to other state or federal programs, but there aren’t many of those and all of them are also intensely competitive. In most cases, a project that misses out this round will have to be put on hold.

“You mothball it…you’re gonna wait until next year,” said Linda Mandolini, president of Eden Housing, an affordable housing development nonprofit that applied for $135 million to support ten projects. 

That wait comes with a price tag — another year of payroll costs, of watching cost estimates tick up and of making interest payments on existing loans. It also gives other funders more time and more reason to reconsider their investment and pull out, delaying the project further.

“We end up with maybe 9, 10 or 11 different sources of funding that we’ve patched together over the course of anywhere from three to nine years,” said Rebecca Louie, president of San Diego-based Wakeland Housing and Development Corp, which requested nearly $45 million for five projects, though only two are still in the running. 

A project only pencils out if every one of those funding sources come together at the right time, Louie explained. That’s what makes the state funding so important, even if it doesn’t always make up a huge share of a single project’s funding.

“I like to say that my business model is that I hope to win the lottery,” said Louie. “And I have to pay like a million and a half dollars for the ticket.”

Delay also means waiting another year before an otherwise ready-to-go home for priced-out Californians can break ground. 

More funding incoming? 

The prospect of missing out on the state funding award is particularly concerning for affordable developers this year. California is facing a cash crunch , meaning housing programs won’t be able to rely as much on budget windfalls as they have in prior years . Though bond measures are likely headed for the ballot in November , the political prospects of voter-sanctioned borrowing are far from certain. 

This will-they-won’t-they approach to funding is no way to tackle twin housing and homelessness crises that California survey respondents regularly name as a top priority , said Louie with Wakeland Housing. “It should be considered infrastructure and a really important part of a healthy economy and we treat it each year as if it’s a surprise that we still need it,” she said.

Since 2012, when state lawmakers and the courts nixed California’s “redevelopment” agencies , locally-funded entities tasked with funding infrastructure, public spending on affordable housing has come in fits and starts, one state bond measure or flush budget season at a time.

The last time the cause of affordable housing went before state voters was in 2018. Nearly half of the $4 billion in borrowing authorized by Proposition 1 went to the Multifamily Housing Program. That fund is now running low, which prompted state lawmakers last year to begin mulling a new bond for 2024. 

That discussion was left on hold when the legislative session ended in September, but is sure to pick back up in January. Meanwhile, housing advocates in the San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego are planning to launch their own regional borrowing efforts, while a statewide measure is likely to make it easier to pass such campaigns. 

The other side of the equation: Cost 

Spending more public money on affordable housing is one way to produce more units. Another is to make it cheaper to build them in the first place. Lee Ohanian, a UCLA economics professor and right-of-center policy commentator, said the state isn’t focusing nearly enough on the second option. 

“There’s only so many units, we can build at a million dollars a unit ,” he said. “Just dumping more subsidies into a grossly inefficient system is just going to lead to more waste of tax dollars.”

Particularly budget-busting affordable housing projects often make headlines, but industry-wide cost data is hard to come by. That makes it difficult to diagnose where developers and policymakers should focus their cost-trimming efforts. 

In 2020, the UC Berkeley’s Terner Center for Housing Innovation analyzed project applications to one of the state’s main subsidy programs. The key takeaway: Between 2008 and 2019, total costs increased 55% per square unit . The biggest cost drivers, labor and material costs, weren’t specific to affordable housing construction, but costs that affect the entire building industry.

Things have likely only gotten worse in the years since. The industry has been hammered with supply chain snarls and resulting material price hikes, soaring insurance premiums and, most recently, sharply higher interest rates .

Ohanian said more data gathering is needed, but the state can and should still focus on “​​low- hanging fruit regulatory reforms.” Those include continuing to make it harder for project opponents to use environmental laws and historic preservation designations to obstruct new construction.

Easier said than done, said Rob Wiener, executive director of the California Coalition for Rural Housing. The “bells and whistles” that add to the cost of building affordable housing in California — be it higher construction wages, enhanced energy efficiency requirements or fees to local governments — all benefit someone. Many of those beneficiaries have lobbyists on their payroll.

“There isn’t one interest group that wants to give up its share,” he said. “So who’s gonna take a haircut?”

Affordable developers can soon dispense with many of these regulatory concerns. Among the bills that state lawmakers passed this year and which are set to go into effect on Jan. 1 is one that would shield many urban projects set aside for lower-income housing from environmental challenge . Another would make it easier for courts to toss such legal challenges out of court . A third re-upped a prior state law that clears the way for all manner of new construction in parts of the state that haven’t kept up with their housing goals set by the Newsom administration’s housing department.

Those will all add to a broad trend that has made it easier for housing — especially affordable housing — to move forward across California in recent years.

“The good news is that we have been pushing all of the local jurisdictions to identify and move projects forward and that’s actually happening,”  said Mandolini with Eden Housing. “Now we just have to figure out how to pay for them all.”
