What Is a Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your car detailing business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan

If you’re looking to start a car detailing business, or grow your existing car detailing business, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your car detailing business in order to improve your chances of success. Your auto detailing Business Plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Car Detailing Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a car detailing business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business.

The second most common form of funding for a car detailing business is angel investors. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who will write you a check. They will either take equity in return for their funding, or, like a bank, they will give you a loan. Venture capitalists will not fund a car detailing business. They might consider funding a car detailing business with a national presence, but never an individual location. This is because most venture capitalists are looking for millions of dollars in return when they make an investment, and an individual location could never achieve such results.

If you want to start a car detailing business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. Below are links to each section of your car detailing business plan template:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of car detailing business you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a car detailing business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a network of car detailing businesses.

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the car detailing industry. Discuss the type of car detailing business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of car detailing business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of car detailing businesses:

  • Full car detailing : this type of car detailing business offers a combination of interior and exterior detailing services.
  • Show car detailing : this type of car detailing business offers specialty detailing services for high-end vehicles.
  • Interior restoration : this type of car detailing business offers vehicle interior restoration services in addition to detailing.

In addition to explaining the type of car detailing business you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of vehicles you’ve detailed, revenue growth, number of repeat customers, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the car detailing business.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the car detailing industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your car detailing Business Plan:

  • How big is the car detailing industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your car detailing business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your car detailing Business Plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: vehicle owners, car collectors, companies with employee cars, and ride sharing drivers.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of car detailing business you operate. Clearly, car collectors would want different service options and would respond to different marketing promotions than Uber drivers would, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most car detailing businesses primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other car detailing businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes drive-in car washes, auto retail shops, and people who clean their own cars at home. You need to mention such competition to show you understand that not everyone who wants their car detailed will utilize a car detailing company.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other car detailing businesses with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be car detailing businesses located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of detailing services do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide superior services?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you make it easier or faster for customers to use your services?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For an auto detailing Business Plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of car detailing business that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to car detailing, will you provide lounge seating, package deals, or online reservation services?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your car detailing business. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your car detailing business located near a busy retail district, or next to a car dealership, etc. Discuss how your location might provide a steady stream of customers.

Promotions : The final part of your car detailing marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your car detailing business, including car detailing, managing inventory, and administrative duties.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to detail your 1000 th car, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to reach X number of signups for your car detailing package or launch in a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your car detailing business’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in detailing cars. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing car detailing companies or successfully running small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you detail 25 cars per week or 100? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your car detailing business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. For example, let’s say a local dealership approached you with a $50,000 contract to provide car detailing services for their fleet of unsold vehicles. Let’s further assume the contract would cost you $50,000 to fulfill in terms of increased staffing costs. Well, in most cases, you would have to pay that $50,000 now for employee salaries, supplies etc. But let’s say the company didn’t pay you for 180 days. During that 180-day period, you could run out of money.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a car detailing business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like mechanical polishers, detailing steamers, and upholstery extractors
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your location lease or a dealership partner contract.

Putting together a business plan for your car detailing business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will have an expert car detailing business plan; download it to PDF to show banks and investors. You will really understand the car detailing industry, your competition, and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful car detailing business.

The Expert’s Guide to Writing a Car Detailing Business Plan

  • Jan 09, 2020 by Scott MacDonald

If you’re thinking about starting a car detailing business, maybe you’ve heard that you should make a business plan. In this article, we’ll dive deeper into what a business plan is, why you should write one, and how you can make a business plan that’s actually useful for your detailing business.

What is a business plan?

A business plan is a written document where you outline the vision, details, and goals of your future business. Having a business plan helps you prepare for the future. You can take time to think about what you plan to do and how you’re going to do it. Being organized through a business plan will help you avoid problems down the road. A business plan normally incorporates objectives, goals, strategies, and finances as they relate to your business.

Why should you write a car detailing business plan?

You might be wondering why you need to write a business plan for your car detailing business. Here’s a good reason: statistically you’re 2.5x more likely to actually start your business after you write a business plan. A business plan helps you organize all of the ideas in your head and actually put them down on paper. Writing down your plans helps you see and maybe even catch some problems you might have down the road. Here are 3 reasons a business plan will help:

  • You can determine the feasibility of your business idea. Writing down all of the internal and external factors of starting and running your business will make you consider your opportunities and your risks in starting a business. Thinking about all opportunities and risks can help you make decisions about how you will operate your business.
  • You give yourself the best possible chance of success. Writing a business plan will point your attention to things you might forget about, like operations, finances, legal obstacles, and/or promoting your services. There are a lot of moving parts when you start a business. It’s important you give yourself the best chance at starting a successful detailing business.
  • It can help you secure funding and/or loans if needed. Starting a business takes an investment, and most new businesses need to secure funding or take out a loan to get started. If you are planning on taking out a loan from a bank, a good business plan will help your chances at securing the amount of money you need. Banks want to know that you are considering the risks of starting your new detailing business appropriately.

Types of Business Plans

There are two different types of business plans you can create for your own car detailing business idea: the traditional business plan (normally 10+ pages) and the one-page business plan . There are pros and cons to both types of business plans. With that said, the one-page business plan is probably sufficient for your new detailing business. Traditional business plans are usually used by businesses looking for investors who need a deeper level of detail about your future company.

What can your car detailing business plan include?

  • Basic information including your registered name, address of any physical locations, other contact information, and names of key people involved in the business
  • A mission statement to describe the main focus of your detailing business
  • An objective statement that explains your company’s goals
  • A business strategy that goes into detail of what your goals are and how you plan to achieve them
  • Your business and management structure that outlines key employees, managers or other owners of the business (including the percent ownership and the extent of each owner’s involvement in the company)
  • How you will package your detailing services and how you will set pricing
  • Outline the potential customers you will target, their pain points, and how your business can help solve them
  • Define your unique value and what differentiates you from your competitors
  • Create a marketing and sales plan , including messaging on why your services are worth buying and what channels will you use to promote your business
  • Financial plans including your revenue goals, start up investment required, and growth opportunities and plans

Common business plan mistakes to avoid

  • Making unrealistic assumptions The challenge of business plans is that you do a lot of planning before doing, which means you run the risk of being unrealistic. It’s important to make sure that you are thinking about real customers, what they need, and what they will buy. Try speaking to potential customers to make sure your planning lines up with what’s realistic.
  • Setting vague goals When you set vague goals, it’s difficult to know how to measure them and achieve them. We recommend setting specific goals so you can turn them into specific action plans.
  • One-size-fits-all planning Every detailing business is unique, which means that one-size-fits-all planning just doesn’t make sense. Writing a business plan that is as specific as possible to you and your business will help much more than copying someone else’s. Take some time to really think about the details of your business and answer the questions in a way that makes your uniqueness clear.

Good luck writing your business plan for your detailing business! Your business plan should be a very helpful tool for you to start and grow your business. Once you create it for the first time, it’s easy to come back and review and improve it over time.

Anyone who is considering starting a business of their own wants to ensure there’s enough demand to sustain their new venture. Between the higher prices of new cars and longer vehicle lifespans, people are buying fewer new cars and driving their current vehicles longer. This is one factor that has led to increased demand for car washing and detailing services. According to Grand View Research, the industry’s global market size is expected to grow at a rate of approximately 3.2% from 2019 to 2025.

Are you considering starting a car detailing business of your own to capitalize on this growth? For the right person, it could be a great business venture. However, it’s important that you understand everything that goes into starting such a business.

Below, we outline the major steps involved in starting a car detailing business so that you can make sure that you’re prepared for the challenges you’ll encounter before getting started.

8 steps to open a car detailing business

1. gain experience.

It might be tempting to look at this industry and think, “It’s only car washing, how difficult can it be?” But to call car detailing nothing more than car washing is a vast understatement. On top of a thorough understanding of all of the services that your customers will expect you to provide, running a successful car detailing business will require you to have at least a basic level of business acumen as it applies to the field.

That’s why, before you start your own business, it’s a good idea for you to work in the industry for at least a few years. Doing so will allow you to gain real, hands-on experience performing the services that your future business will offer — experience that will come in handy even if you aren’t the person actively working on customers’ vehicles every day. Shadowing the manager or business owner will also give you insights into the challenges they face and the logistics of running a business that you need to prepare yourself for.

Similarly, while car detailing isn’t a field that requires formal training, it can be helpful. Completing an auto detailing certification like the one offered by the International Detailing Association can help you quickly learn the knowledge and skills you need to be successful, while also giving you a point of differentiation over your competition.

2. Write a business plan

Writing a business plan is often recommended as one of the first steps for opening any business, and with good reason. The act of writing a business plan forces you to consider key details and aspects about your business — details you’ll need to successfully open your business, bring in investors or business partners or qualify for a business loan or other funding options.

Exactly what you include in your business plan will vary depending on the industry and the type of business you plan to open. That being said, the document typically defines what your business will do, how it will make money, where it will operate, how it will be structured and how you plan to grow and market your services.

Important questions for you to answer when writing a business plan for your car detailing business include: Whether you plan to operate out of a physical location like a garage or whether you want to be a mobile car detailing business, whether you plan to work alone or bring on staff, whether you will need business funding to get started and whether or not you have competitors to consider.

This is also a great time to consider the specific services that you plan to offer, as well as how you will price these services. These services might include, but by no means are limited to:

Full detail.

Engine detail.

Paint touch-ups.

Cement removal.

Black trim restoration.

Carpet dying.

Windshield repair.

Dent repair.

It’s important to ensure that you’re pricing your services at a level that the market you operate within is willing to pay; otherwise, you may find it difficult to find customers. Websites like Thumbtack and Angie's List, can be great resources to leverage to see what other car detailers in your area are charging for their services.

Not sure how to start drafting your business plan? Luckily, there are many business plan software solutions available for free (or relatively inexpensively) online.

3. Choose a business entity structure

One important step involved in completing your business plan is to select the type of business entity that you will structure your detailing business as, whether a sole proprietorship, limited liability company, general partnership, corporation or something else.

While it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the options, choosing the right business entity structure is important. The structure you choose will impact everything from your tax liability to how you bring in investors (if you choose to do so) to your bankruptcy options should the business fail. It’s not something to neglect.

Every business and every situation is unique and you should take your unique situation into account when choosing a business structure. That being said, forming an LLC is probably going to be the easiest and most straightforward option for you as you first launch your detailing business. Compared to a sole proprietorship, an LLC will protect your personal finances in the event that your business fails, preventing you from being held personally liable for your business liabilities.

Working with a business attorney or tax professional can be a great option if you’re unsure of which entity is the best choice for your business. They can help you understand the positives and negatives associated with each option and can even help you register your business entity at your local secretary of state’s office or chamber of commerce.

4. Get your business licensed and permitted

Ensuring that your car detailing business has all of the required permits and licenses isn’t just a good idea — it’s necessary. Failing to acquire the proper licenses and permits could result in fines, penalties, the closure of your business and, at worst, jail time.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to prescribe a complete list of permits that you’ll need to operate a car detailing business because the precise requirements will vary depending on where you choose to operate your business. At a minimum, you will need a basic state and local business operating license. But other common business licenses and permits you’re likely to need include zoning and land use permits, building permits, fire department permits and a certificate of occupancy — especially if you plan to operate out of a physical location.

Different states and localities may also require you to apply for and maintain a car detailing license in order to operate within that locale. In California, for instance, any business engaged in car washing and polishing must register their business to obtain a license.

Similarly, it’s important to remember that car detailing typically requires a lot of water. Individual cities and regions may have their own departments responsible for overseeing air and water pollution. You may need to register your business with this department as well and demonstrate how you will comply with regulations such as water reclamation and disposal requirements.

5. Purchase the appropriate levels of insurance

Building a successful business takes a lot of work. It’s only natural that you should want to take steps to protect that business so that you can be sure that it will last into the future. This is what makes purchasing business insurance so important.

While the types and amounts of business insurance you need will depend on your specific business, there are certain types of insurance that most detailing businesses will need. These include general liability insurance; vehicle and property insurance; and workers compensation, unemployment and disability insurance.

If you’re unsure of which types of business insurance you need, or how much coverage you need in each category, working with a business attorney can be an excellent idea.

6. Invest in the right equipment

Launching your car detailing business will require an upfront investment to purchase the equipment necessary for doing the job.

Exactly what equipment your business will need will depend on how you structure your business and what services you offer; for example, a mobile detailing business will need to invest in a truck or a van, while a detailer operating out of a garage or other physical location will need to invest in that physical space.

Commonly needed equipment may include the following:

Pressure washer.

Hot water extractor.

Water reclamation system.

Rotary buffers and orbital (dual action) buffers.

Wet-dry vacuums.

Carpet extractor.

Air compressor.

Various cleaning solutions.

Towels, buckets, sponges and brushes.

While some people may be able to cover these startup costs out of pocket, many individuals find them prohibitive. If you find yourself unable to pay for these with your savings, there are a number of financing options that can help you get your business off the ground.

An SBA loan , provided by a bank but guaranteed by the Small Business Administration is a popular option, as these loans carry low interest rates and generous terms compared to many other forms of funding. Similarly, business term loans can be a great alternative if you find that you don’t qualify for an SBA loan. Another popular option, especially when you have to purchase a lot of equipment, is equipment financing .

7. Don’t neglect your finances

One mistake that many individuals make when launching their first business is not taking steps to separate their personal finances from their business finances. They use their personal checking and savings accounts for both their private and business needs, making it incredibly difficult to track their spending and monitor their income. This can also cause confusion come tax-filing season or in the event that your business is audited by the IRS.

Taking the time to separate your business’s finances from your personal finances is a critical step to ensure long-term financial success.

Apply for an employer identification number

An employer identification number, also known as a federal business tax ID, is a nine-digit number assigned to your business by the IRS. Every business needs an EIN to apply for a business loan, open a business bank account, apply for a business credit card and — perhaps most importantly — file taxes.

You can apply for your EIN online, by mail or by fax. Depending on your method of application, you will either receive your number instantly or within a few days or weeks.

Open business checking and savings accounts

In order to keep your business’s finances separate from your own, you will need separate accounts with which to save and spend your business’s money.

This is why most businesses will open one or more business bank accounts, such as a business checking account (to make payments and purchases with readily available cash), a business savings account (to save money which is not immediately necessary for the day-to-day operation of your business) and a business credit card (to make essential payments and purchases when you do not have cash readily available).

Purchase business accounting software

You may have a goal to eventually hire an in-house or freelance accountant or bookkeeper to help crunch the numbers, but if you’re like the vast majority of small business owners, when you first start out you will be keeping track of your own finances. Choosing business accounting software that aligns with your needs will undoubtedly make running your car detailing business that much easier in the long run.

8. Establish a marketing plan for growth

A thoroughly thought-out marketing strategy can help you to both drum up demand when you first launch your detailing service and keep your business growing after those initial first few months.

Registering a domain, signing up for Google My Business and building a web presence for your business are great places to start and are more or less essential for modern businesses. Similarly, designing a logo for your business and using it in your signage, business cards and other print assets can go far in establishing your brand.

The bottom line

While starting any business comes with its own unique challenges, the right level of preparation and forethought can remove many of the variables and confusion associated with starting your car detailing business. Ensuring you have the right training and certifications, drafting a thorough business plan, ensuring your business is licensed and registered and establishing a financial plan are all critical steps to your success.

Auto Detailing Business Plan Outline

Home » Getting Started With Your Auto Detailing Business » Auto Detailing Business Plan Outline

Creat e A Business Plan

Ever y business needs a business plan. It ’s a living document that can be edited and updated as needed. Creating a business plan is one of the first and most critical things to do if you want to start, operate, and grow any small business – more importantly a professional and successful car detailing business. A business plan is comprised of many components which we will outline for you!

Mission Statement:

Determine what you want the company to be within your community. Develop an Auto Detailing operation that provides its customers the best quality product that meets and exceeds the customer’s needs and expectations. Quality will be defined as the right product to meet the customer’s requirements from a basic hand car wash, complete detailing to a ceramic coating that includes paint correction along with all of the services listed in this business plan sample component: Services Offered.

The purpose of the company is to provide not only quality service, but a livelihood for the owners and its employees. Along with the ability to provide the community with assistance as needed and that is within the means of the company.

Note: Decide if the business location will be a fixed location, work from home, or operate mobile.

Determine where the customers are and how you will reach them. A competitive study should be conducted to determine the feasibility of such a company in the general area of __________________. It may be determined that four such operations exist in the area where you plan to operate your business.

None of these companies below offer the menu of services that (your company name) will offer.

  • Joe’s Body Shop is limited to exterior cleanup only
  • ABC Auto Dealer offers detailing only to customers who have purchased a vehicle from them.
  • Car Wash Inc. only offers express detailing and not full service detailing.
  • Calvin’s Custom Detail Center appears to offer the most complete service options of all of the reviewed detail businesses in the area. They should provide the best competition and will be the benchmark for your startup efforts.

The ten mile radius of your proposed location (fixed or mobile) shows there are four high end neighborhoods with homes ranging in price from $400,000 to $1,500,000. These four areas contain approximately 350 homes all within 10 miles of your business location or mobile territory. In addition, there are two industrial parks, two hospitals and numerous office building complexes with approximately 8,000 employees. The local private airport and a marina are also within that 10 mile radius.

Determine how much funding you will need! Every small business has different needs, and no financial solution is one-size-fits-all. Your personal financial situation and vision for your business will shape the financial future of your detailing business. Once you know how much  startup funding you will need, determine how you will obtain it.

Also known as bootstrapping, self-funding lets you leverage your own financial resources to support your business. Self-funding can come in the form of turning to family and friends for capital, using your savings accounts, credit card, or even tapping into your 401(k).

By self-funding, you retain complete control over your business, but you also take on all the financial risk yourself. Be careful not to spend more than you can afford and be especially cautious if you choose to use retirement accounts early. You could face expensive fees or penalties or hurt your ability to retire on time. Check with your plan’s administrator and a personal financial advisor before you tap into your retirement account.

Venture Capital From Investors

Investors can provide you funding to start or grow your detailing business in the form of venture capital investments. Venture capital is normally offered in exchange for a percentage of ownership in the business.

Venture capital is different from traditional financing in many important ways. Venture capital typically:

  • Focuses on high-growth companies
  • Invests capital in return for equity, rather than debt (it’s not a loan)
  • Takes higher risks in exchange for potential higher returns
  • Has a longer investment perspective than traditional financing

Most venture capitalists will, at a minimum, want a seat on the board of directors. So be prepared to give up some portion of both control and ownership of your detailing business in exchange for funding.

How to get venture capital funding

There is no guaranteed way to get venture capital, but the process generally follows a standard order of basic steps.

Search for an investor   Look for individual investors, sometimes called “angel investors” or venture capital firms. Be sure to do enough background research to know if the investor is reputable and has experience working with startups.

Provide your business plan   The investor will want to take a look at your business plan to make sure it meets their investing criteria. Most angel investors concentrate on the various industries, geographic areas, or stage of business development.

Due diligence  The investors will want to look at your company’s management team, market, and services, corporate documents, and financial statements.

Discuss the terms  If they want to invest in your detailing business, the next step is to agree on a term document that describes the terms and conditions for the fund to make the investment.

Get the investment  Once you agree on the terms, you can get the investment! Once a venture fund has invested, it becomes actively involved in your detailing business . Venture funds normally come in what is known as “rounds.” As your detailing business meets its achievements, further rounds of financing are made available, with adjustments in price as your business executes its plan.

Use crowdfunding to fund your detailing business

Crowdfunding raises funds for a business from a large number of people, called Crowd funder. Crowd funder’s aren’t technically investors, because they don’t receive a share of ownership in your detailing business and don’t expect a financial return on their money.

Instead, crowd funders expect to get a “gift” from your company as thanks for their contribution. Many times, that gift is the product or service you plan to sell.  Offer a free full detail or even a ceramic coating depending on how much the individual crowdfunder invests.

Crowdfunding is popular because it’s very low risk for business owners. Not only do you get to retain complete control of your detailing business, but if your business fails, you’re typically not under obligation to repay your crowd funders. Every crowdfunding platform is different, so be sure to read the small print and understand your complete financial and legal obligations.

Obtain a small business loan

If you want to have complete control of your detailing business, but don’t have enough money to start, consider applying for a small business loan. To increase your chances of getting a loan, you should have a solid Business Plan, and financial projections for the next forty eight months. These tools will give you a good idea of how much you will need to ask for and will help the bank know if they are making a good choice by loaning you the funds.

Once you have your documents prepared, contact banks and credit unions to apply for a loan. You will want to compare offers to get the best possible terms for your small business loan. Use “Lender Match” to find lenders who offer SBA (Small Business Association) guaranteed loans.

If you have issues getting a traditional small business loan, you should look into SBA guaranteed loans. When your local bank thinks your business may be too risky to loan money to, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) can agree to guarantee your loan. That way, the bank has less risk and is more willing to loan you the funds.

Market Niches in order of importance:

  • Retail clients in the upscale neighborhoods defined in the demographic section.
  • Companies that have been identified within the industrial parks and office building complexes in the area.
  • Other automotive businesses
  • Real estate agencies
  • Insurance companies and claims departments
  • Apartment and condominium complexes
  • Car dealerships
  • Auto body shops
  • Car rental agencies
  • Senior citizens centers
  • Parking garages
  • College universities
  • Automatic tunnel car washes
  • Boat marinas

 Marketing Plan:

The marketing plan will vary from season to season throughout the year. The important issues of the plan include the following items.

  • Development of a website to ensure a solid presence on the internet.
  • Join the local chamber of commerce to gain immediate exposure to the businesses in the area. Create a special pricing for all chamber of commerce members and their families to promote growth.
  • Development of a plan for exploiting the social media platforms on the internet and the smart phones in use.
  • Create proper signage, logos, service menu and business cards for use by the company and its employees.  (Branding the Business)
  • Develop a plan to send weekly, biweekly, or monthly emails to your prospects and past customers.
  • Face to face meetings with each auto related business to foster a relationship with so that they are aware of your business and how you can help each other. Place flyers and business cards at their locations to create customer awareness.
  • Advertising mediums should be monitored and controlled to determine success in terms of customer and revenue growth.

Cost and Profit Model:

Have a cost and profit model to project the number of detailing services you expect to complete in the next twelve months. Follow that by your income and expense projections for the next twelve to twenty four months. Use this tool to project your income, expenses, and net income for the next four years. Understand your fixed and variable costs, your profit margin, and your cost per hour to operate your business profitably .

Equipment and consumable products:

Build and list your equipment and product needs, include the sources. Create a list of consumable products including polishes, cleaners, dressings, ceramic coatings, along with all detailing accessories you will need to provide the services that you listed in the Services Offered section of the business plan.

  • Pressure washer
  • Foam cannon
  • Rotary Buffers
  • DA Polishers
  • Ozone generator
  • Vapor steamer
  • Heated soil extractor
  • Exterior brushes
  • Interior brushes
  • Spray and polish bottles

  • Dressing applicators
  • Tornador interior cleaning tool

  • Carpet dyes
  • Window tint and installation accessories
  • Glass repair kit
  • Paint protection film
  • Plotter to cut films
  • Portable vehicle lift
  • Car covers
  • Car dusters

Methods and Procedures:

Consider what methods and procedures you need to start and maintain your detailing business. Start by determining what is important to you and to the success of your detailing business. Detail King provides a methods and procedures document at all of their live seminars. You can also view all of the components of this document on the Detail King website by searching “Auto Detailing Methods & Procedures Guide.”

Licenses and Permits:

List all permits, and licenses needed to be compliant with the local, state, and federal regulations. Review legal requirement with counsel and accounting professional.

EPA and local environmental regulations:

It is important to understand the regulations and the potential equipment needed to comply. Be sure to search them out and list them in your plan so that your mentor or legal counsel can assist you with understanding and complying with them. These requirements are different in each area and will require your attention.

Business Structure:

While starting a business involves a number of practical considerations, structure remains the primary determination to be made at the outset. Many entrepreneurs do not consider forming a business entity. Instead, the business will default to a sole proprietorship in the case of an individual owner, or a general partnership if there are multiple owners.

Those two types of businesses have significant disadvantages, mainly in the form of unlimited liability: Creditors of the business can recover the owner’s personal assets for business liabilities. The main advantage of those entities, pass-through tax treatment, means that profits are not taxed at the business level. By not incorporating you do not have liability protection.

Limited Partnerships (LPs) and Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) – Both of these entities are formed by filing documents with the Department of State and are largely governed by internal agreements between the owners. While at least one owner of a limited partnership must serve as general partner and be subject to unlimited liability, all members of an LLC are afforded limited liability. LLCs, however, may be subject to a state’s capital stock tax. Your personal assets are protected by incorporating your business. Being a small business, your accountant may advise you not to become a “C” corporation but rather and LLC or an LP.

S corporations are the most common entities that provide the owner personal protection with pass-through tax treatment. To create any corporation, the owner must file Articles of Incorporation with the Department of State, make an election to be treated as an S Corp., adopt bylaws, and hold initial meetings of shareholders and directors – among other organizational tasks. Your detailing business can incorporate as an LP or LLC and still be an S corporation. Best advice is to meet with a good small business account, review your situation and determine what is best for you and your new business.

Growth Plans:

Try to anticipate your growth relative to volume of customers, employees, equipment, and marketing needs. Consider forecasting customer and revenue growth along with retained customers. This will tell you that your overall plan is working. Forecast customer growth and revenue for 12, 24, 36 and 48 months.

We hope you are able to take away the key points from this business plan outline. You will need to fill in the blanks and insert your own information but by using this outline, you can make sure that you have all of your bases covered and that you aren’t missing anything! Once you are ready to start your auto detailing business you may want to consider one of Detail King’s Auto Detailing Business Start Up Kits .

The industry is also projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.5% from now until 2030. The most significant growth in the industry is seen in companies that diversify their offerings and implement value-added services (such as interior cleaning, rim shining, etc.). In 2023, per capita disposable income is expected to rise, presenting an opportunity for the industry.

Furthermore, eco-friendly or waterless detailing services are popular because customers are aware of the negative effects of wasting too much water and using chemicals, and 35% of consumers are willing to pay significantly more for eco-friendly services.

The automotive industry as a whole is going through digitalization and a significant increase in technology adoption. On-demand mobile detailing apps for consumers are also on the rise. John Smith, the business owner, has been in the automotive detailing business for over 10 years. With an emphasis on quality work and exceptional customer service, John was able to work his way to being the lead detailer for a local car dealership and increasing sales for his department.

John Smith will be the lead detailer and will be assisted by two additional detailers that he has trained to provide the same level of service as he does. Starting out, the detailers will work 40 hours a week at $25 per hour, plus bonuses.

During peak periods, independent contractors will be hired to assist with customer jobs.

This includes describing why you are starting this type of business, and what problems it will solve for customers. This is a quick way to get your mind thinking about the customers’ problems. It also helps you identify what makes your business different from others in its industry.

2. Products & Services Offered by Your Car Detailing Business.

The next step is to outline your products and services for your car detailing business.

When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my business?
  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?
  • Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.

If you don't have a marketing plan for your car detailing business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

A good marketing plan for your car detailing business includes the following elements:

Target market

  • Who is your target market?
  • What do these customers have in common?
  • How many of them are there?
  • How can you best reach them with your message or product?

Customer base

  • Who are your current customers?
  • Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
  • How can their experience with your car detailing business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

Product or service description

  • How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
  • Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
  • Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
  • How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

Competitive analysis

  • Which companies are competing with yours today (and why)?
  • Which ones may enter into competition with yours tomorrow if they find out about it now through word-of-mouth advertising; social media networks; friends' recommendations; etc.)
  • What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

Marketing channels

  • Which marketing channel do you intend to leverage to attract new customers?
  • What is your estimated marketing budget needed?
  • What is the projected cost to acquire a new customer?
  • How many of your customers do you instead will return?

4. Write Your Operational Plan.

Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step
  • Milestones & KPIs
  • Location of your business
  • Zoning & permits required for the business

What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a car detailing business?

To run a Car Detailing business, you will need the following equipment, supplies and permits:

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Towels, sponges and other cleaning supplies
  • Polishes, waxes and sealants
  • Chemicals and special cleaners
  • Interior cleaning tools such as brushes
  • Pressure washer for exterior cleaning
  • Business license from your local government

5. Management & Organization of Your Car Detailing Business.

The second part of your car detailing business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your car detailing business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Car Detailing Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a car detailing business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a car detailing business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your car detailing business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your car detailing business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your car detailing business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
  • Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.

How to Start a $75K/Month Car Detailing Business (2023)

Auto detailing can be highly profitable with a low barrier to entry and equally low overhead costs. We’ll show you how to start a car detailing business.

Let us demonstrate how owning a car detailing business isn’t complicated or expensive.

We gathered expert advice from GoDetail founder and owner Alan Tursunbaev. He started the auto detailing business for extra money between high school and college. At 22, he’s making $75K per month. Even better, he’s increased revenue by 50% in the last six months. Best of all, he offers $10 discounts for every referral a customer sends.

We’ll explain the step-by-step process of how to start a car detailing business. By the end of this article, you’ll understand more about:

  • Car detailing business skills
  • Mobile detailing services
  • Car detailing business plans
  • Cleaning business names
  • Business structure and other legal requirements
  • Cleaning business finances
  • Safety during business operations
  • Equipment for mobile detailing businesses
  • Mobile car detailer marketing
  • Employee management structure
  • Processing documentation

Are you ready to start a successful car detailing business?

Step 1. Learn more about the car detailing business

There are three areas you should understand before starting a car detailing business:

  • Car detailing industry
  • Detailing technical skills
  • Soft skills

Learn about the mobile detailing industry

Someone starting a car detailing company needs to understand the $14.7 billion car wash and auto detailing industry. We’ll answer some common questions about how to start a mobile detailing business.

How much do car detailers make?

According to IBISWorld Report 81119A , there are over 67,000 companies under NAICS Code 811192. That means the average company makes around $220,000, but it varies dramatically.

GoDetail makes approximately $900K per year, making it over four times the revenue of the average company.

How much does a car detailing business owner make?

The net income for the industry is 17.1% of revenue, which means that the average small business owner makes approximately $37,620 in profit plus any salary they take from mobile car cleaning. But, Alan told us:

We make around 60% gross profit. (That converts to about 42% net income, or over $300K net income)

Check out our first interview with Alan below:

How much does it cost to start detailing business operations?

Alan started his mobile car detailing business with $500. So you don’t need much money when starting a mobile detail business. If you are starting a detail business with a physical location, it may cost $20,000 to $10 million, depending on the cost of land, equipment, and labor in your area.

Now, just because you can start this business with $500 doesn’t mean that’s the best choice. A larger investment at the start can often help you grow faster so you’ll end up with more money in the long term. This doesn’t need to mean taking out a massive loan, either. A business line of credit gives you access to funds when you need them and you’ll only accrue interest on the money you use, making it a flexible and cost-saving way to get a quick cash infusion for a new detailing business.

The good news is that starting an auto detailing business doesn’t require a ton of experience. Over 90% of US households have access to at least one vehicle. So, services catering to automobile owners aren’t going anywhere!

Let’s get into the “details” about starting a car detailing service.

Skills for a mobile car detailing business

So what are the skills you’ll need? You’ll need to be able to do the following when starting a detailing business:

  • Air compressor operation
  • Car washing and drying by hand
  • Leather conditioning
  • Pressure washing
  • Upholstery cleaning
  • Wet and dry vacuuming

Learn and practice these skills, and you’re on your way to becoming a successful auto detailer!

IMPORTANT: If you want an in-depth tutorial on how to start a detailing business, check out Alan’s course . He’ll walk you through setting up everything you need for a new business, including the automations and marketing to get more customers and save money. Use coupon code “UpFlip” to get 25% off.

Alternatively, you can watch YouTube auto detailing videos or read Detailing 101 . Simple, right?

Auto detailing certification

Automotive detailing doesn’t have as many certifications as other cleaning businesses do. Here are a few you might consider when you start a detailing business:

International Detailing Association (IDA)

The IDA offers four levels of certification. With each one, you get uniform badges, branding materials, and a listing on the IDA website. Check out their certifications:

  • Certified Detailer (Phase 1) : 10 tests you can take online that cost $400 for nonmembers (NM) or $200 when you buy a $110 per year membership .
  • Skills Validated Detailer (Phase 2) : Same pricing as Phase 1 but requires four mobile detailing skills tests.
  • Recognized Independent Trainer : Requires active membership, Phase 2 certification, three years of training experience, references, and an outline of the training to be considered.
  • Marine Certification : If you want to be a mobile detailer who works on boats, you’ll have to take the Phase 1 exam, then take the $400 NM or $200 member five-part certification exam.

Detail King

Starting a car detailing business is easier with Detail King. You might want to consider Detail King because they are:

  • A Pennsylvania accredited technical school for detailers.
  • A supply house for everything mobile auto detailing related (You’ll get discounts on cleaning business startup kits and supplies.)
  • Paint restoration trainers, which means you’ll have a chance to expand revenue streams.
  • Ceramic coating trainers, which helps mobile detailing businesses offer a service that starts at $1,000, and improves resale value by documenting it on Carfax. Ceramics protect against scratches, small dings, and corrosion.
  • Offering licenses which are the equivalent of a franchise without the franchise fees.

Not-so-technical skills

The key to Alan’s success is incredible customer service and looking at the big picture. He adds value to his mobile detailing service by:

  • being personable
  • learning names
  • sharing detailing tricks with customers

The common denominator of successful businesses, especially startups, is excellent customer service.

Don’t neglect these soft skills:

  • communication
  • trustworthiness

Alan told us:

Customers prefer over-communication rather than under-communication.

He added that you need to hire employees, automate, and create scripts to build this into your mobile detailing business model and grow.

The International Detailing Association ( IDA ) published a code of ethics you might want to check out.

Here’s the formula

The formula for gaining skills and experience for starting a car wash business is:

  • Learn technical skills.
  • Pay close attention while detailing cars.
  • Nurture those soft skills.

There are even more mobile auto detail tips available on Detail University !

It’s that simple. Now shake that up and spray it over any areas of doubt you had about how to start a detail business.

Step 2. What type of detailing business is right for you?

GoDetail provides both home auto detailing and commercial fleet detailing services, but there are many types of detailing businesses. For example, your small business can concentrate on:

  • at-home car detailing
  • commercial fleet inventories, such as a car dealership
  • recreational vehicles (RVs)
  • shop, garage, or car wash-based operation

Stationary or mobile?

Alan and his crew have both mobile and stationary car detailing. Mobile sounds convenient, right? Keep reading to decide what works for you.

Stationary car detailing businesses need a garage, lobby, office, adequate plumbing, parking lot, and other infrastructure. It’s easy to realize that this is the more expensive option. Nevertheless, it can be very profitable. Read more about costs and garage setup when starting a car detail business.

Two types of stationary detailing shops

There are generally two types: high-volume and boutique.

How to start a car detail business with high volume

A high-volume business location serves customers looking for lower-cost services. These small businesses offer:

  • convenience
  • fast service
  • high volume (of course)
  • more workers with fewer skills
  • A mix of automation, self-serve, and manual service

People might vacuum their own car at these. Some local businesses even require the owner to hand wash the car.

Most businesses that require a customer to wash their own car have gone out of business. If you find one, you might want to buy it because you can add automation without needing to pay for as many construction costs.

Starting detailing business: Boutique

Alternatively, boutiques attract customers with luxury vehicles who appreciate first-class treatment and advanced services, such as paint corrections. A boutique detailer provides:

  • high prices
  • services for high-end vehicles
  • small, well-trained staff
  • specialized services, including ceramic coatings

Don’t assume less work and more money is always better. If your personality isn’t refined, a boutique may not be right for you. Maybe you want to do something else involving motor vehicles like:

  • Become an auto mechanic
  • Start a food truck

In essence, consider your options and make the best choice for you.

How to start mobile detailing business

Mobile detailing is better for many small business owners because it requires less capital and experience.

Notto Jensen, the owner of Attention 2 Detail attributes much of his success to this decision:

Starting small and being mobile…turned out to be an asset.

Here’s the magic: All you need is a van and some supplies. Alan estimates startup costs for supplies are around $500. You can get a used van with under 100K miles for $10K to $20K.

Take the next step by researching how to accept payments. Start by reading this: “ Invoices & Receipts 101 for Auto Detailers. ” There’s good stuff there.

The competitive advantage of a mobile car wash business

Notto realized that starting small, being mobile, and not being able to afford overhead initially benefited him. He says:

I found that very busy people couldn’t believe that we would come to their house and take care of it.

We also interviewed Isaiah Barhoum of Big’s Mobile Detailing.

There’s plenty of business ideas you can consider. Check out our courses here .

Step 3. Write a car detailing business plan

I know what you’re thinking: I can learn how to start a car detailing business from home and watch the profits shine. Well, there’s more to it than that. The deal is that a car wash business plan is your roadmap to long-term success.

Business plan sections are pretty standard. Make sure to include:

  • auto detailing insurance
  • competitive analysis of car detailing in my area
  • detailing supplies
  • financial projections
  • ideal physical location
  • licenses and permits
  • marketing plan
  • strategies to make money

And the best part is that UpFlip’s guide steers you through writing a business plan, including a free template to download. It’s worth your time to check it out.

Step 4. Choose a name

Now, it’s time for some fun!

Choosing a name is an exciting part of the entrepreneurial process. Enjoy being creative, but consider the following points:

  • Add your details: You want people to know what you do, but don’t constrain yourself too much. GoDetail and Attention 2 Detail both state what they do, but Attention 2 Detail can be expanded to any niche.
  • Easy and clear: Potential customers may be put off by a name they struggle to spell or pronounce. Keep it simple.
  • Location: Consider including your location to attract customers in your area and establish yourself within the local region.
  • Branding: Ask yourself if you can easily incorporate your name into branding elements, such as logos and graphics. For inspiration, read the histories behind famous car logos .

Set up a dot com

Using a dot com in your website address looks very official. Run your name through this domain name search to see what’s available. Also, it’s worth your time to read UpFlip’s guide on creating a website .

Lock it all in

Run your business name by some trusted friends and family (and Google Trends ) and then register it legally, which brings us to our next step below.

Step 5. How to start a car detailing business

Establishing a legal structure is vital and legally necessary, and it might require professional help . The experts at CorpNet understand all the ins and outs of what it takes to set up and run a business legally. They can also be helpful down the line with things like payroll tax registration and other legal matters that will come up as you grow. If you’re just looking for more information, check out their Learning Center for comparisons of different legal structures and other helpful knowledge.

Your new detailing business will likely need assorted licenses, permits, and tax forms. Find out what you’ll need from the Small Business Administration ( SBA ) and Municode Library .

The Municode Library is great, but most of us aren’t lawyers. Fortunately, I went through and gathered the information for cleaning businesses and most of it will apply to mobile detailing.

Business structure & car detailing license

There are several types of business structures you may want to use. You can file for most of them on the Secretary of State website for your state.

  • S-Corporation : Best for high earning companies that want to lower business owner taxes. Limited number of stockholders, provides personal liability protection, requires business owners to receive salary (and optional dividends), no double taxation.
  • C-Corporation : Best for companies trying to change the world. Unlimited stockholders, provides personal liability protection, high compliance costs, and double taxation. Business owners can earn money through multiple income streams with different tax codes.
  • Limited Liability Company : Best for companies that want to separate business entities from personal assets. Provides limited liability, pass-through income, and no double taxation.
  • Sole Proprietorship : Best to just get started. Doesn’t provide liability protection or create a separate business entity, and is considered personal income. Don’t use a sole proprietorship if you hire employees.

To learn more about business structures, check out our blog on 11 structures . You’ll also want to get your business licensed. Some states let you do it all at once. Don’t forget to grab an employer identification number from the IRS . It’s like a social security number for your business.

Open a business bank account

To run a successful business, you need to open a business bank account because you need to separate your business and personal finances. Business bank accounts can be either online or from banks and credit unions.

Online banks tend to have better offers, but they might not offer the range of business credit card accounts you can open in the legacy banking system. If credit accounts or making cash deposits are important to you, go with the legacy banks. Learn more .

Get business insurance

You’ll want to get business insurance including:

  • General liability insurance
  • Property damage insurance
  • Workers compensation insurance
  • Cyber Security Insurance (You have people’s credit cards, names, and addresses.)

Consider Simply Business  t o get the most competitive insurance quotes for your business.

Step 6. Set up your car detailing business finances

Let’s talk numbers. You already have a budget from your business plan and know what the industry profit margin is. How are you going to fund the business?

The auto detailing industry’s barrier to entry is low, but funding is an important step. Try business financing through one of our partners. Other sources provide a boost, such as:

  • angel investor
  • business partner(s)
  • credit cards
  • crowdfunding
  • government programs
  • home equity loan
  • friends or family
  • personal finance through savings or wages
  • rollover for business startups ( ROBS )

Each method has its pros and cons. For example, personal funds help you possess full ownership and avoid interest, but they might place you in a risky position financially.

Pricing structure

Rather than charging per hour, Alan set prices for car detailing based on the size of the car. Make sure to have a price list for common cars. Notto charges per foot for boat detailing. Customers appreciate transparency.

Charge extra on the initial detailing or when the vehicle has extra grime. Explain to customers that a routine detail will cost less per cleaning because it keeps the car cleaner.

Once you have a price locked in for a customer, put it in writing. If needed, create a contract with crystal clear terms. It makes sense, right?

Revenue and profit

We currently clean about four to six cars a day.

He has 18 employees, bringing in revenue of around $75,000 per month. For more information on how to profit from detailing services, take Detail King’s advice for a spin.

Step 7. Establish safety protocols

Training and adhering to safety guidelines , such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ) guidelines, are essential in this business. Take them seriously to keep all parties safe from injury, fines, and legal action.

Know your stuff

Be familiar with detailing chemicals and equipment operations, and investigate locations before performing a mobile detail. Here’s the truth: good practices mitigate risk and prevent fines over violations.

Environmental concerns

Both mobile and brick-and-mortar detailers must be mindful of issues and regulations about the environment, like the Clean Water Act and Ozone Transport Commission ( OTC ).

IDA explains environmental concerns on their website. Also, you can offer eco-friendly products for your service.

Step 8. Get equipment and supplies

Equipment and supplies for a detailing business vary for mobile or stationary, with items in common. Let’s open the door and hop in.

Common supplies

Car detailing businesses need the same essential items, such as brushes, polishers, and a vacuum. Learn more by reading IDA’s list of essential equipment for detailers. It’s worth your time to check it out. You’ll also need to get some software to run your business.

Software for Mobile Detailing

A solid CRM software is a must for any mobile business, ensuring your employee and customer communications are organized and that no tasks are falling through the cracks. The Monday Sales CRM platform is our favorite at UpFlip because it integrates your sales pipeline and lead management into your customer engagement portal so everything’s in one convenient place.

Alan uses Housecall Pro, a software built for the mobile detailer . Housecall Pro CRM has features built-in to increase customer satisfaction, transparency, and communication, while simplifying your employees jobs.

Don’t buff out the importance of a polisher

As Notto puts it, your “main muscle” is your buffer, which you can purchase easily from retailers . There’s also a ton of options for wax . Notto suggests finding two or three that work for you. There’s no need to buy them all.

Water reclamation

Some detailers collect and dispose of greywater with a water reclamation system. Detail King offers guidance , but that’s only part of the story because certain states regulate greywater . So, be sure you comply with applicable laws.

Alan prefers to use Optimum No Rinse (ONR) because it reduces the water needed down to a bucket. Requires one ounce of ONR and two gallons of water per car.

At the time of writing this article, costs for important detailing equipment you’ll need are as follows:

  • Absorber (Notto’s favorite towel) $20 for two
  • All-purpose cleaner $7
  • Buffer $120
  • Hoses and nozzles $75 to $100
  • Leather cleaner and shoe brush $15
  • Pressure washer $159 (You don’t need this if you’re using ONR)
  • Shop-Vac $100
  • Small tools, such as grout brushes $13
  • Business cards $30

Imagine running out of drying towels at a customer’s house. Instead of watching water droplets form white spots on the great wash you just performed, plan with backup supplies and equipment.

Acquire what you can at first, but heed Notto’s advice that not having them can “stop you dead in your tracks.” Don’t let this be you.

Mobile detailing business

A mobile detailing setup requires a heavy-duty vehicle , such as a van, SUV, or trailer. Be sure it’s reliable, presentable, and has plenty of space for supplies and equipment. Notto stresses vehicle reliability as the key to success .

Are you wondering where the water comes from to wash all these vehicles?

Some mobile car detailing businesses utilize the customer’s residential water supply, while other mobile car wash businesses have a water tank . There are also “ waterless ” detailing supplies like ONR.

Step 9. Hire employees

Alan had a lot to say about hiring employees. He’s hired 18 of them and told us:

I use Indeed to hire. It is $14 per application that you keep.

He went on to explain:

They should contact us somehow. I want them to want to work for us. If they just click send resume, they aren’t who I am looking for.

Alan emphasized the importance of paying them well and commission.

Our mobile detailers make between $1,500 and $2,500 every two weeks. We pay them 30% of jobs plus tips. This structure encourages them to act like a business owner because it impacts their earnings.

Once you get busy enough, Alan recommends hiring employees, then a receptionist, and finally a manager. He cautioned people against one of the biggest mistakes when hiring:

Don’t expect them to change. If they aren’t reliable, it’s better to fire them and hire someone new.

Watch our interview with him below.

According to Notto:

Finding the right people, rewarding them, giving them a little bit of ownership. . . and just making sure that you have that same vision.

Some of the qualities of a good employee include:

  • enthusiastic
  • safety-conscious
  • team player

It also helps if they possess technical skills, which can be taught. Also, here’s a great new hire checklist for a car detailing business.

Step 10. Develop a sales and marketing strategy

Marketing is super important, and sales bring in revenue. So, don’t skimp on your sales and marketing budget.

Don’t have all your eggs in one basket.

His marketing budget is $3,500, and it’s divided evenly between:

  • Print materials
  • Business cards

According to , an excellent selling point is that a regularly cleaned car increases its resale value and promotes pride in ownership. Keep reading to learn more about your sales audience.

Market Research: Identify your customer

Create an ideal customer persona to help you pinpoint your ideal demographic. Narrowing down the characteristics of your ideal customer will help you build your customer base.

Read more about identifying ideal customers and creating a customer persona.

Do some research to figure out who is willing to pay for the services you provide in your area. Once you’ve narrowed it down, go out and find some customers!

Digital marketing

In the digital age, your online presence is how customers find you. A website, social media accounts, email newsletters, and digital advertising are all practical marketing tools. Check out Upflip’s helpful guide on creating a website.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

Hire an expert. Don’t try to do it yourself. you have too much going on.

Be sure to implement SEO for the best results. Services like Surfer can help you with that. And the best part is you can always perform a quick test to determine if your SEO is working.

Check out what has to say about finding a reputable SEO company. And once you have your website, don’t forget to explore the following opportunities to improve SEO:

  • featured snippets
  • Google Business Profile
  • optimization of your site for speed

Digital business card

Try a digital business card service, like Popl , that allows you to link your contacts, websites, social pages, payment apps, and promotional material all from one page.

Social media

Instead of spending too much time scrolling through social media, make it work for your business! Facebook and Instagram provide free insights on business accounts, with opportunities to run paid ads.

Managing multiple social media platforms can take a lot of time, and that’s something most small business owners don’t have to spare. Tailwind makes this easier by managing your email and social media marketing across platforms, and is an especially useful tool for small detailing businesses that don’t have the budget for dedicated marketing staff.

Email newsletter

A newsletter is an excellent way to keep in touch with customers and send them coupons. Mailchimp and Constant Contact provide awesome email marketing tools.

Digital advertising

Take your ad dollars one step further with broader digital marketing efforts. Consider pay-per-click (PPC), marketing automation, and other avenues.

Printed materials

Print marketing can be very effective, but tailor it based on the target market.

Consider creating mailers, brochures, business cards, car magnets, flyers, t-shirts, and other promotional swag as a way of getting your name out there. Use an application like Canva to help. Alan told us about his car detailing business cards:

We have a scratch-off that reveals a QR code with a discount. Feel free to steal the idea.

Direct contact

Cold-calling and door-to-door advertising are less common these days than they were when Notto started in the mid-nineties, but these methods can still be effective if done responsibly.

Polished appearance

Like the vehicles you clean, everything about your appearance should sparkle. Be a rolling advertisement by ensuring your crew, equipment, and fleet vehicles look polished.

Consider simple uniforms and vehicle branding to look professional and maximize advertising.

Get reviews to feed the crews

Don’t forget reviews! They’re a cost-effective way to appeal to customers online. Excellent service with a friendly approach will result in good reviews.

You need to focus on building the team, marketing, (and) getting reviews. Everything else you can pay someone to do.

In addition, actively seek reviews ! Alan uses Housecall Pro to have reviews automatically sent to his customer base. However, he’s building his own CRM that will fix some of their problems and cost each car detailing business about half as much.

Otherwise, only negative reviews will prevail. For bad reviews (warranted or not), respond professionally .

Good feedback leads to new customers and encourages repeat business. It’s a car detailing shop, so you know customers will need recurring service. Simple, right?

Step 11. Document business processes

Establish good processes that scale easily and that others can follow. You won’t let go of the wheel completely, but it will help you smooth bumps in the road. Use Lucidchart to document them in a process map .

Here’s a basic “process” for working through your options:

  • Set a goal for your process mapping session.
  • Include all roles involved in the workflow.
  • Identify the issue you hope to solve with the map.
  • List all activities.
  • Determine the triggers, inputs, and outputs.
  • Flow out the steps and decisions because you can’t always depend on the “ideal” path.
  • Make the final draft, get all roles to agree, and sign off on the process map.

Create a successful car detailing business

The internet won’t replace the service industry. Making cars clean and shiny isn’t going anywhere soon. Before starting your auto detailing business, ask yourself two fundamental questions:

  • What do I need to research?
  • Am I capable of providing a great experience through top-level customer service?

It might seem like a lot, but don’t overcomplicate it. In truth, you can start a car detailing business quickly.

Have the vision to provide outstanding service, have fun, make money, and make people happy. That’s all you need to succeed. Now buckle in and drive through the wash bay to come out as a clean, mean detailing machine.

Take the next step in learning more about vehicles—and potential customers—by reading about car rental and charter boat businesses.

What are some of the best strategies you have found to improve your business results?

I’m looking for a company providing the services of car wash/car detailing. Carpets cleaning garden care. All you need to do is to provide the services at the doorstep of the customer. The customers’ booking will be provided to you according to your schedules. It will increase your sales and profit and it will be a pleasure for me if we will work together. I hope we will have a positive reply after this. Thank you.

Looking forward to learning in building my business

Hi there, thanks for the article

Hi there, Thanks for sharing such an awesome blog with us. Thanks to google to make me land such a fantastic blog

We recently started our new mobile car detailing company and came across this article.

Really appreciate you taking the time to educate us on this. Especially when it comes to SEO as we’re currently working on setting ourselves apart from our competition in our local area.

There’s a lot of different aspects when it comes to actually setting up the business of your auto detailing company correctly, but you did an excellent job breaking it down. It felt like I was back in school taking my favorite subject and my teacher would explain the topic in a simple yet elegant manner!

Thanks a ton!

We’re glad it helped!

I really like all the points you’ve made. With this post I’ve learnt a lot. I visited your website, it’s really impressive.

I own my own detailing business in SouthWest Florida “Bustin Suds Mobile Detailing, LLC” and am having trouble getting clients and business. Wondering if theres any help yall could provide

Hi Noah. We have several blogs regarding getting cleaning clients and cleaning contracts. You might want to read those to see if they help. If you aren’t taking before and after pics, you might want to start doing that and posting them on social media. While reviewing customer relationship management tools, I found that Housecall Pro was really easy to use and would help with Google rankings. There is a ton that goes into business visability you can reach out to me using my [email protected] email and I am happy to discuss with you.

As a Detailer myself I must point out that there are several GREATLY misleading things in this article that could realy… send you up stream.

1. Chemicals. On the low end you will spend about $500 on chemicals. A gallon of ok degreaser starts minimum $50. Not sure where that $14 price tag came from. Word of advice: if walked in to a store to buy your chemicals then you will never have a fighting chance. You need to find an actual distributor who will give you the CORRECT chemicals with charts and everything showing the ratios of dilution and every active ingredient. Go buy that Eagle One rim cleaner and spray it on a nice car with visible brake pads. I dare you. You’ll have fun explaining how you have permanently ruined a Porsche owners brake pads because you bought your stuff at autozone.

2. SUPPLIES!!! I can’t believe how little insight they give you. First of all you need a vehicle that can properly store everything plus extra. I’ve replaced entire pressure washer parts, vehicle issues, electrical issues, pneumatic issues, etc on site at a job. If you don’t have proper back up or tools then you are done. Expect these things to break. New or old. I promise it will happen. Power and water. NEVER EVER AND I MEAN EVER USE A CUSTOMERS POWER. If you blow the main fuse because you are buffing, have your vacuum hooked up, or electrical pressure washer, you’ll again… be in very serious trouble. Maybe you can flip it back on and all is well. Maybe you fry something, short out your own equipment because it most likely won’t have surge protection. OR poor grandma is hooked up to machines like oxygen in the back of the house and you may or may have not just left them with life saving electricity. Water pipes and hoses burst. One minute all is well then next you have water spraying all over who knows what. Then the no brainer!! What if there is no hook up or it is unusable? You need a giant water tank made for this specific purpose or you need to redneck it together. Also not cheap. You NEED at least 100 gallons to do 3 details on medium sized vehicles in a gravity fed set up. The weight of the water won’t be enough to feed your pressure washer otherwise. Spray bottles…. VERY expensive. You’ll need 10 at all times and they are about $15 a piece for a medium tier one. Towls. Don’t wash these like a cheap…. person. It will cost you time and money to re-wipe surfaces because of fuz or residue from something. Or worse… a tiny piece of anything is cought in it and you go to wipe black paint then boom. Nice fresh scratches. Haven’t even started to discuss how expensive it is to run air hoses, electrical chords, and pressure washer hoses. All 3 things are very pricey and you’ll need back up for those as well. I keep mentioning pneumatics btw because if you don’t use air your literally wasting thousands of dollars in time. Just small examples. Didn’t go in to specific types of buffers, the right one for you, and the price of pads….

3. IDA. Don’t ever fall for that money scheme. In the last gosh maybe 6-7 years and hundreds upon hundreds of customers I dealt with working for shops, marines, RV guys, mobile detailing, and body shop detailing I’ve literally never once in my life had a customer who asked about a detailing certification or were even aware that such a thing exists. The absolute worst detailing company I ever worked for had several people IDA certified. It doesn’t mean a thing. They take $2000 from you to take online tests that they offer no help or schooling for. Just so you can have a tiny patch and a sticker for your van that no one will ever care about or notice saying “hey i know how to turn on a vacuum and spray chemicals!” The most successful detailers in my area avoid them like the plague. It’s an absolute scam. 150% of what they feed you is garbage to make them more money off of you. No human on earth outside of detailing knows what the IDA is so don’t ever expect leads. Help will cost you more despite the now several thousand you have spent. Oh and that lovely 5% discount on random chemicals you’ll most likely never order or need because a real detailer uses a legitimized distributer.

I could touch bases on MANY more things… not trying to be a jerk but this article could realy hurt somebody trying to start out. Don’t tell people about some kid who started with $500 more then a half decade ago because his business model and finances have zero relevance today. He has a great model NOW because he has changed it entirely and a GARUNTEE there is much info left out of story and the reality of it.

Hi Dylan, I am happy to go over your comments and review the article to incorporate some of the information. May I suggest filling out this form: It seems you could be a good contributor if you communicate what you find more useful.

‍1. Creating a Business Plan is an important Step in Establishing Your New Business

Writing a sound business plan can be a key indicator of future success. Use it as a foundational document to help you grow and thrive and update it occasionally to incorporate new ideas and opportunities. When writing your business plan, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Don't be long-winded, as long plans are less likely to be used as intended
  • Let your passion come alive in the document
  • Know and address your audience
  • Provide supporting documentation and reference data like appendices, customer personas and product demonstrations
  • You can never do enough research
  • Clearly demonstrate why your business is different from the auto detailer down the street
  • Be objective when doing research
  • Avoid jargon and language that customers won't understand
  • Don't be afraid to change it when the industry changes

2. Purchasing Vehicles and Equipment to Start a Car Wash Business

The biggest outlay of money you will have will be the vehicle or vehicles you need to transport your automotive detailing equipment, accessories along with yourself and any employees working for you.

For transportation, you'll need either a cargo van, minivan or a pickup truck. A cargo van is your best choice as these vehicles are manufactured for hauling equipment and supplies. Using a pickup truck can be tricky, as getting the necessary steam cleaning equipment into the flatbed can be tricky. You'll also have to buy a hardtop or a locking tarp to keep your equipment safe when not in use.

Cargo vans or minivans are more accessible, especially when you use a device like the Fortador Cargo Slider, which helps slide your heavy equipment easily in and out of your van. Minivans must also undergo a conversion, either as a DIY project or have professionals convert it for you, adding to the expense.

Mobile Auto Detailing Business Van

2.1 Selecting Your Small Business Work Vehicle

Many new businesses want to save as much money as possible in the initial stages, which is a good idea for an upstart as you'll need money for marketing and advertising. Consider buying a used van that is only several years old, as you can often save $10,000 off the purchase price.

The Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster and Mercedes-Benz Metris are the most popular and widely available cargo vans used to haul mobile car wash cleaning equipment and supplies. New Ford and Ram vans start at about $26,000, while the Mercedes-Benz is much pricier, starting at $34,000. A less expensive new alternative is the Nissan NV200, with a base price of about $24,000. However, you should note that the Nissan van is much smaller. If you are going the used route, try to find vans only a few years old with 40,000 miles or less so the vehicle will still be reliable.

A sound vehicle will also set the stage for the long-term branding of your company via graphics on the side of the van.

2.2 Budgeting for Equipment and Supplies

Car Steam Cleaner for moile auto detailing

The next biggest outlay for your mobile car wash business will be steam cleaning equipment . Consider purchasing a machine with multiple functions like the Fortador PRO Max or PRO Max Deluxe, starting at $10,999. A machine with multiple functions and hoses saves money in the long run. The Pro Plus has both a steaming function and a shampooing/extraction function, along with three hoses to allow use by multiple operators. A less expensive option is the Fortador PRO and PRO Deluxe, starting at $7,499. Upstart small businesses may also consider the Fortador Volt Electra, starting at $7,350.

Other products to consider include the Fortador Cargo Slider at $2,250 or at a discounted $1,750 when purchased with a steamer. Adding a Kevlar Coating kit that will help protect car exteriors and interior seats, carpets and hard surfaces will give your mobile detailing business another service to offer. New business owners should also budget for a starter set of detailing shampoos and other chemicals.

If you ask for funding as part of your car detailing business plan, knowing your exact needs at the startup time is crucial to help investors understand how you intend to make money, and more importantly, where profits will come from and how you intend to pay it back. Don't forget to include the price of insurance, both for your vehicle and for general liability, as well as for health insurance and benefits for employees.

2.1. What equipment is needed for a mobile car wash?

  • Auto Detailing minivan, Car Wash trailer or pick up truck to carry
  • Auto detailing steamer
  • Power source like generator or powerbank
  • Dry vacuum for prelimenary cleaning
  • Light source
  • Set of brushes

  • Set of detailing chemicals with spray bottles
  • Extencion power cords
  • Polishers for offering paint correction service
  • Air compressor
Learn more about microfiber towels you will need to detail your car

3. General Business Plan Information

All business plans must have certain information that will convince investors that your mobile detailing business is worthy of support. You'll need to include your goals, direction and future planning and should include market research competitor analysis, financial documentation, an overview of your marketing strategy and the cost of licenses and permits. Essential components include:

  • An executive summary that briefly introduces your business and its purpose
  • Company description along with a wider description of the mobile detailing industry
  • Market analysis and opportunity, describing how you will differentiate your business
  • Analysis of your mobile detail competitors
  • Operations, development and management personnel
  • Your marketing plan
  • Financial history and projections

3.1 Profitability of Mobile Car Washing

All business plans require that you show that your intended company will serve a need in your area of operation. Owners can do this by showing how they will fulfill services that consumers need or maybe even don't know they need. One way that you can do this is by coming up with services that no one else provides. If you know of direct competitors in the area, you can counteract their services by packaging them differently.

3.2 Demonstrating Mobile Detailing Profitability

Before starting your new business, you need to organize the types of service you will offer. Create special offers and packages that will make sense to customers. For instance, you may want to offer different packages for customers with cars, recreational vehicles, motorcycles and boats. Developing a professional service program will give your customers an easy way to understand your services, but it is also an essential element of your car detailing business plan.

You can offer exterior and interior services as separate packages, or as full-service detail, or express detail packages. Things to think about include specifying a price range for different size vehicles and extra charges that will apply when a vehicle is extremely dirty. Some services can also be priced separately as add-ons.

3.3 Building Your Menu

Performing market research to determine what competitors in your service area are doing will also help you build your services menu and its pricing. By pricing your packages correctly, you will remain competitive in your market. When you offer services that competitors do not, you give new customers another reason to engage your services while also offering the potential for greater profitability.

Higher-level services like paint restoration, Fortador ceramic coating and stone chip removal are excellent add-on services. Give your audience options for taking care of their vehicles. Bundle services into packages that make sense and offer a la carte services for something specific.

3.3.1. Exterior Detailing

Include the following with descriptions:

  • Exterior detailed wash, nothing that you use a steam cleaner and why you use this method
  • Paint correction and shine restoration, which lets customers consider if their vehicle looks faded
  • Wax services with an express spray or by hand or machine for a long-lasting shine
  • Paint sealant as an alternative to wax to protect the vehicle's exterior
  • Engine wash and detail with a steamer to remove grease and grime
  • Tire and wheel wash and polish to remove brake dust and other build-up
  • Headlight wash to remove insects and dirt

Ordinarily we can successfully run a normal car wash and auto detailing business without the stress of going through the required protocol of setting up a new business including writing a detailed business plan, but because of the nature of the kind of car wash and auto detailing business we want to establish, we don’t have any option other than to follow due process.

We hired the services of Mr. Dennis Long – John, an HR and Business consultant with bias in startups to help us conduct SWOT analysis for our company and he did a pretty job for us. Here is a of the result we got from the SWOT analysis that was conducted on behalf of Pristine® Automobile Detailing Services Ltd;

Pristine® Automobile Detailing Services Ltd is a new business which is owned by an individual (family), and we may not have the financial muscle to sustain the kind of publicity we want to give our business. As a new business, we are also quite aware that it will take time for us to build trust with our clients.

  • Opportunities:

Generating Funding/Startup Pristine® Automobile Detailing Services Ltd

Pristine® Automobile Detailing Services Ltd is a business that will be owned and managed by Richard Long – John and Family. They are the sole financial of the business which is why they decided to restrict the sourcing of the start – up capital for the business to just three major sources.

These are the areas we intend generating our start – up capital;

  • Generate part of the start – up capital from personal savings and sale of his stocks
  • Generate part of the start – up capital from friends and other extended family members
  • Generate a larger chunk of the startup capital from the bank (loan facility).

N.B: We have been able to generate about $100,000 (Personal savings $80,000 and soft loan from family members $20,000) and we are at the final stages of obtaining a loan facility of $250,000 from our bank. All the papers and document has been duly signed and submitted, the loan has been approved and any moment from now our account will be credited.

14. Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

Part of the plans we have in place to sustain Pristine® Automobile Detailing Services Ltd is to ensure that we continue to deliver quality services, improvise on how to do things faster and cheaper. We are not going to relent in providing conducive environment for our workers and also the required trainings that will help them deliver excellent services at all times.

From our findings, another factor that kills new business is financial leakages. In order to plug financial leakages, the management of Pristine® Automobile Detailing Services Ltd adopts the use of payment machine and accounting software to run the business.

We are quite aware that our customers are key component to the growth and survival of our business hence we are going to continuously engage them to give us ideas on how to serve them better. We will not waste time in adopting new technology, best practices and diversifying our services; expand our product and service offerings once the need arises.

Marketing Analysis of auto detailing business

The most important component of an effective car detailing business plan is its accurate marketing analysis. If you are starting on a smaller scale, you can do marketing analysis yourself by taking help from this auto detailing business plan sample or other car detailing business plans available online. On the other hand, if you are starting a car detailing business on a larger scale, it is always best to seek the counsel of marketing experts.

The success or failure of a business totally depends upon its marketing strategy which can only be developed on the basis of accurate marketing analysis.

Therefore, it must be considered before you think about how to start car detailing business . Samuel acquired the services of marketing experts to carry out the marketing analysis for his mobile auto detailing business plan .

5.1 Market & Industry Trends

Immigration business plan.

Before you start an auto detailing business , you must analyze whether the market is feasible for startups or not. For analyzing the market trends, you can also take help from this car detailing business plan template . According to IBISWorld, the car wash and auto detailing industry generate £11 billion in revenue every year in the United States. As of 2018, there are more than 65,000 businesses in this industry which are responsible for employing more than 212,000 people in the United States. The number of car wash and auto detailing companies has been increasing over the past years while the industry is growing at an estimated rate of 3.1%. Considering the number of established businesses in this industry, the environment has become extremely competitive especially for the startups. Starting an auto detailing business is easy but sustaining it and making it profitable is something which can only be achieved by impeccable planning and effective marketing.

5.2 Marketing Segmentation

Our primary target market is the residential community living in San Jose. Nearly all people based in the area have their own vehicles either new or leased. Our secondary market will be the car dealerships located in the vicinity. Our experts have identified the following type of target audience which can become our future consumers:

The detailed marketing segmentation of our target audience is as follows:

5.2.1 New car owners:

This group comprises of customers who have recently bought a new car. These customers are very conscious about their cars and want them to look new as long as possible. Our detailing services will provide the perfect solution to them. In addition to exterior and interior detailing, these customers are also expected to have their vehicles ceramic coated by us for preserving their new look.

5.2.2 Sports car owners:

Many young and middle-aged men in the neighborhood own expensive sports cars. These people will also need our services for maintaining the exquisite looks of their expensive vehicles.

5.2.3 Luxury car owners:

Luxury car owners have totally different requirements and they can easily spend a lot of cash for maintaining their high-end expensive cars and keeping them in the best possible shape. These customers prefer quality to cost that’s why we will offer premium packages for them.

5.2.4 Local businesses:

Since we will be located in the main commercial district of the city, we will be surrounded by several companies and local businesses, most of which have fleets of small vans and cars. Although these businesses own a lot of cars, their contribution to our revenue and sales will be negligible since they seldom require car detailing services.

5.2.5 Dealerships:

There are 5 car dealerships within 6 miles of our location. These car dealers sell old as well as new cars and need their cars to be in the best possible state. That’s why they will regularly require our auto detailing services. The detailed market analysis of our potential customers is given in the following table:

5.3 Packages Pricing

Considering the competitive environment, we have priced all our services in the similar ranges as of our competitors except for the interior detailing. While many of our competitors offer interior detailing services for about £100 on average, we have priced this service in relatively lower ranges. This is done to achieve a competitive advantage since interior detailing is the most frequently availed detailing service. Our services are priced as follows:

  • Exterior detailing starting at £50
  • Interior detailing starting at £80
  • Waxing & paint correction starting at £200
  • Ceramic coating starting at £400

The pricing varies with the type of car and will generally be 30% more for SUVs and trucks.

5.4 Target of the Company

Our main business targets to be achieved as milestones over the course of next three years are as follows:

  • To become the best auto detailing service in San Jose within next five years of launch by providing high-quality services
  • To achieve the net profit margin of £10k per month by the end of the first year, £15k per month by the end of the second year, and £25k per month by the end of the third year
  • To balance the initial cost of the startup with earned profits by the end of the second year

After identifying the market demand, market trends, and the potential customers of the startup, the next step is to define an effective strategy for business attracting those customers.

Aqua Hydro Solutions

Aqua Hydro Solutions Alex and team are very professional, courteous and patient through out our business development. They helped our multi million dollar company advance to the next stage within our original business plan and strategies. We look forward to working with them on our next development and strongly recommend their services to any serious company that is evolving from start up and/or in the growth stages. Kirk

Like marketing analysis, sales strategy is also an important component of a mobile car detailing business startup and must be properly planned before you think about to start your own car detailing business .

6.1 Competitive Analysis

As mentioned earlier, there are more than 65,000 similar businesses in the United States and for surviving in such intensely competitive environment, one needs to have certain competitive advantages. Our biggest competitive advantage is our location which is nearly ideal to start mobile car detailing business . We are located in the main commercial district but the residential zone is just at a ten minutes’ drive from us. Secondly, we have priced our interior detailing service in relatively lower ranges as compared to our competitors so as to promote our sales and build trust among customers. Another aspect which will distinguish us from other similar businesses will be our unparalleled and exceptional customer service. At our company, all esteemed customers and their valuable vehicles will be dealt with utmost respect and care.

6.2 Sales Strategy

After carrying out a detailed analysis, our experts came up with the following brilliant ideas to advertise and sell our services.

  • We will advertise our company on social media.
  • We will make a company webpage by which our customers can make a reservation with us.
  • We will offer various discounts on special occasions to attract new customers.
  • We will initially offer 20% discount on all services for first three months.

6.3 Sales Monthly

6.4 sales yearly, 6.5 sales forecast, personnel plan.

Personnel plan is also an important component of a car detailing business plan since it gives you an estimate of the staff required for your startup as well as the costs incurred on their salaries. So, make sure to duly consider it before thinking about how to start a car detailing business . The personnel plan of ProStar Auto Detailers is as follows.

7.1 Company Staff

Samuel will act as the General Manager of the company and will initially hire following people:

  • 2 Sales Executives responsible for marketing and discovering new ventures
  • 10 Workers for manually washing the cars and providing detailing services
  • 3 Technicians for operating the equipment and machines
  • 1 Driver for driving the mobile van to customers
  • 1 Technical Assistant for managing the company’s official website and social media pages
  • 1 Customer Representative for interacting with customers

To ensure the best quality service, all employees will be selected through vigorous testing and will be trained for a month before starting their jobs. Since the traffic for car detailing service varies month to month so part-time workers will also be hired to facilitate the company staff in the busy summer months.

7.2 Average Salary of Employees

The following table shows the forecasted data about the salaries of the employees for the next three years:

Financial Plan

The last component of car detailing business plan is an in-depth financial plan. The financial plan crafts a detailed map of all the expenses needed for the startup and how these expenses will be met by the earned profits. It is recommended that you hire a financial expert for guiding you through all financial aspects needed to be considered for starting an auto detailing business . The company will be financed by Samuel himself and he will control the direction of the business to make sure that it is expanding at the forecasted rate. As for the car detailing business start up , no equity funding or outside loan will be required. With the help of financial experts, Samuel has developed the following financial plan for his auto detailing start up business , which outlines the financial development of ProStar Auto Detailers over the next three years.

8.1 Important Assumptions

The financial projections of the company are forecasted on the basis of following assumptions. These assumptions are quite conservative and are expected to show deviation but to a limited level such that the company’s major financial strategy will not be affected.

8.2 Brake-even Analysis

Do you know how to start a home-based car detailing business on the side? Cars are not only considered a luxury but a necessity that needs to be kept in good condition. This is the purpose of this document as we attempt to show you how to start a car detailing business from home.

It is a fact that people will want to keep their cars in top shape or the best conditions. This opens up a huge opportunity for persons willing to take advantage of them. Without further ado, let’s get to details.

Is a Car Detailing Business the Right Choice?

You need to provide a satisfactory answer to this question because such an answer will determine if you are well suited for the job or not. To provide an answer, you need to know how passionate you are about vehicle maintenance. A lot of car detailing businesses have failed because such entrepreneurs were driven by the wrong reasons.

How to Start a Home-Based Car Detailing Business

Car detailing has a lot to do with the appearance of automobiles. It is common knowledge that after a vehicle leaves the stands, it deteriorates with the accumulation of debris and dirt. Without the most basic maintenance, this could lead to damage.

If you find this work enjoyable, then you have a higher chance of success than one who does it for wrong reasons such as money, or the “only business option available.”

Writing a Business Plan

Whether you want to start a car detailing business from home or a rented space, you need to plan for this undertaking. This is where your business plan comes in handy. This document is crucial to the success of your car detailing business and shouldn’t be rushed.

If possible, you should seek the help of experts (business consultants and legal experts) when putting your plan together.

Startup Capital

This is an important aspect of starting a car detailing business. Without this, there is little you can achieve.

Thankfully, a car detailing business does not require so much startup capital. In fact, starting a car detailing business from home will cut down your overhead significantly. You need to have this properly figured out as it could mean the success or failure of your car detailing business.

One of the most common ways to raise capital for your home-based car detailing business is through savings. A lot of successful car detailing businesses today have raised their startup funding in similar ways.

Equipment Required

Car detailing depends on the availability of detailed equipment. Thankfully such equipment is quite affordable.

The equipment takes up the bulk of your startup costs. Some of the most basic equipment you should have include sponges and towels, car polishers and pad washers, vacuum cleaners for vehicles, water hoses, interior and exterior brushes, sealants and wax, leather cloths as well as professional cleaning products.

Other equipment includes pressure washers, a mobile water supply, a generator, buckets, and q tips among several others. These make your work much easier and more professional.

Having the Experience

Experience counts a great deal in your quest to set up a car detailing business.

Without experience, you will have little knowledge of how to use the tools listed above. You are also likely to carry out a shabby job. It is important to learn the skill and have the experience necessary. Learning the skill won’t take you years.

By visiting an existing car detailing business and also trying out learned skills, you will be able to learn faster.

Practice! Practice!! Practice!!!

Before opening your doors for business, you need to test your car detailing skills. There is no better way to do this than using your car for your test. You can also offer to provide free car detailing services to your friends and family members.

These will form the bulk of your first clients too. Practice gives you the confidence to accept jobs from clients.

Ensure your business is legally compliant

When operating a business, you want to ensure it is started on the right footing and free from all forms of backlash resulting from illegality. Hence, there are certain things to consider such as determining the form of legal entity your business will take.

Others include applicable tax registrations, obtaining permits and licensing, opening a business account as well as applying for insurance.

Other ways to ensure the viability of your business including marketing your business. This can be achieved through several ways that include using the power of social media as well as creating a website that informs the visitor about all they need to know about what you do.

Check your State’s Water Discharge Laws

Before you purchase your first car detailing business tools, it is important to check with your state’s water discharge laws. This is important as it helps you operate within the confines of the law.

Other Considerations

While you will want to grow your business, there should be limits especially those concerning car detailing fees. Your charges should be appropriately fixed. Also, you should try as much as possible to ensure that is not under-priced.

This keeps you profitable and allows your business to stay afloat.

It is also important that you purchase only high-quality equipment/tools and consumables. This will determine the quality of work done and will ensure that your clients see reasons to return the next time.

In addition to this, you should actively seek out new clientele. There are several places to look at. One of such is used car dealerships.

GUIDE: Cost Of Car Reupholster

We have focused on how to start a car detailing business from home. This is a business opportunity that is easy to set up yet profitable. The added advantage here is that you have cut down your overhead significantly by starting from your home.

How To Write a Winning Mobile Detailing Business Plan + Template

Business Plan-DG

Creating a business plan is essential for any business, but it can be especially helpful for mobile detailing business owners who want to improve their strategy and/or raise funding.

A well-crafted business plan not only outlines the vision for your company but also documents a step-by-step roadmap of how you are going to accomplish it. In order to create an effective business plan, you must first understand the components that are essential to its success.

This article provides an overview of the key elements that every mobile detailing business owner should include in their business plan.

What is a Mobile Detailing Business Plan?

A mobile detailing business plan is a formal written document that describes your company’s business strategy and its feasibility. It documents the reasons you will be successful, your areas of competitive advantage, and it includes information about your team members. Your business plan is a key document that will convince investors and lenders (if needed) that you are positioned to become a successful venture.

Why Write a Mobile Detailing Business Plan?

A mobile detailing business plan is required for banks and investors. The document is a clear and concise guide of your business idea and the steps you will take to make it profitable.

Entrepreneurs can also use this as a roadmap when starting their new company or venture, especially if they are inexperienced in starting a business.

Writing an Effective Mobile Detailing Business Plan

The following are the key components of a successful mobile detailing business plan:

Executive Summary

The executive summary of a mobile detailing business plan is a one to two page overview of your entire business plan. It should summarize the main points, which will be presented in full in the rest of your business plan.

  • Start with a one-line description of your mobile detailing company
  • Provide a short summary of the key points in each section of your business plan, which includes information about your company’s management team, industry analysis, competitive analysis, and financial forecast among others.

Company Description

This section should include a brief history of your company. Include a short description of how your company started, and provide a timeline of milestones your company has achieved.

If you are just starting your mobile detailing business, you may not have a long company history. Instead, you can include information about your professional experience in this industry and how and why you conceived your new venture. If you have worked for a similar company before or have been involved in an entrepreneurial venture before starting your mobile detailing firm, mention this.

You will also include information about your chosen mobile detailing business model and how, if applicable, it is different from other companies in your industry.

Industry Analysis

The industry or market analysis is an important component of a mobile detailing business plan. Conduct thorough market research to determine industry trends and document the size of your market.

Questions to answer include:

  • What part of the mobile detailing industry are you targeting?
  • How big is the market?
  • What trends are happening in the industry right now (and if applicable, how do these trends support the success of your company)?

You should also include sources for the information you provide, such as published research reports and expert opinions.

Customer Analysis

This section should include a list of your target audience(s) with demographic and psychographic profiles (e.g., age, gender, income level, profession, job titles, interests). You will need to provide a profile of each customer segment separately, including their needs and wants.

For example, customers of a mobile detailing business may include individuals, small businesses, and large corporations.

You can include information about how your customers make the decision to buy from you as well as what keeps them buying from you.

Develop a strategy for targeting those customers who are most likely to buy from you, as well as those that might be influenced to buy your products or mobile detailing services with the right marketing.

Competitive Analysis

The competitive analysis helps you determine how your product or service will be different from competitors, and what your unique selling proposition (USP) might be that will set you apart in this industry.

For each competitor, list their strengths and weaknesses. Next, determine your areas of competitive differentiation and/or advantage; that is, in what ways are you different from and ideally better than your competitors.

Marketing Plan

This part of the business plan is where you determine and document your marketing plan. . Your plan should be clearly laid out, including the following 4 Ps.

  • Product/Service : Detail your product/service offerings here. Document their features and benefits.
  • Price : Document your pricing strategy here. In addition to stating the prices for your products/services, mention how your pricing compares to your competition.
  • Place : Where will your customers find you? What channels of distribution (e.g., partnerships) will you use to reach them if applicable?
  • Promotion : How will you reach your target customers? For example, you may use social media, write blog posts, create an email marketing campaign, use pay-per-click advertising, or launch a direct mail campaign. Or, you may promote your mobile detailing business via word-of-mouth marketing.

Operations Plan

This part of your mobile detailing business plan should include the following information:

  • How will you deliver your service to customers?
  • What infrastructure, equipment, and resources are needed to operate successfully?
  •  How can you meet those requirements within budget constraints?

The operations plan is where you also need to include your company’s business policies. You will want to establish policies related to everything from customer service to pricing, to the overall brand image you are trying to present.

Finally, and most importantly, in your Operations Plan, you will lay out the milestones your company hopes to achieve within the next five years. Create a chart that shows the key milestone(s) you hope to achieve each quarter for the next four quarters, and then each year for the following four years. Examples of milestones for a mobile detailing business include reaching $X in sales. Other examples include adding a certain number of new customers or launching a new service.

Management Team

List your team members here including their names and titles, as well as their expertise and experience relevant to your specific mobile detailing industry. Include brief biography sketches for each team member.

Particularly if you are seeking funding, the goal of this section is to convince investors and lenders that your team has the expertise and experience to execute your plan. If you are missing key team members, document the roles and responsibilities you plan to hire for in the future.

Financial Plan

Here you will include a summary of your complete and detailed financial plan (your full financial projections go in the Appendix).

This includes the following three financial statements:

Income Statement

Your income statement should include:

  • Revenue : how much revenue you generate.
  • Cost of Goods Sold : These are your direct costs associated with generating revenue. This includes labor costs, as well as the cost of any equipment and supplies used to deliver the product/service offering.
  • Net Income (or loss) : Once expenses and revenue are totaled and deducted from each other, this is the net income or loss.

Balance sheet.

Include a balance sheet that shows your assets, liabilities, and equity. Your balance sheet should include:

  • Assets : All of the things you own (including cash).
  • Liabilities : This is what you owe against your company’s assets, such as accounts payable or loans.
  • Equity : The worth of your business after all liabilities and assets are totaled and deducted from each other.

Cash flow statement.

Include a cash flow statement showing how much cash comes in, how much cash goes out and a net cash flow for each year. The cash flow statement should include:

  • Cash Flow From Operations
  • Cash Flow From Investments
  • Cash Flow From Financing

Below is a sample of a projected cash flow statement for a startup mobile detailing business.

You will also want to include an appendix section which will include:

  • Your complete financial projections
  • A complete list of your company’s business policies and procedures related to the rest of the business plan (marketing, operations, etc.)
  • Any other documentation which supports what you included in the body of your business plan.

Writing a good business plan gives you the advantage of being fully prepared to launch and/or grow your mobile detailing company. It not only outlines your business vision but also provides a step-by-step process of how you are going to accomplish it.

Now that you know what goes into a winning business plan, it’s time to get started on your own. The template we’ve provided is a great starting point, but don’t forget to personalize it to fit your unique detailing business. If you seek funding, your completed mobile detailing business plan will help you in successfully getting it.
