- School Address Assignment Plan Unless there are programmatic student needs such as Special Education or ESOL services, the Wichita Public Schools assigns students to schools based on residential address. If a particular address is located within a boundary of a school, the student will be assigned to that school. Special Assignments
Students that wish to attend a neighborhood school other than their address assigned must complete and be approved for a special assignment. The special assignment process should always begin with the address assigned neighborhood school and then be forwarded to the requested school. Special assignment request forms should be available at all neighborhood schools. Be aware of the fact that approval for special assignments is not guaranteed. The approval is dependent on the recommendation of both the address assigned (sending - base school) and the requested schools' administrators. In order to recommend approval or denial for a special assignment, school administrators will look at a variety of factors that, among others, include school/grade level capacity, ESOL availability, and Special Education services.
Special Assignments are considered a privilege and certain conditions must be met in order for the assignment to not only be approved, but also continue throughout the school year. Transfers are contingent on the following:
- Students approved for special assignments must provide their own transportation.
- The student must have good attendance, behavior, and academic performance (grades).
- Classroom space availability.
- All personal information must be kept accurate and up to date with the school office.
- Parents must be responsive and supportive of their student’s teachers and school.
- Administrative Decision.
Grades 7th through 12th Only: Athletic/activity may be forfeited with a special assignment request. Please direct all questions to the Sending Principal and/or Athletic Director prior to finalizing the request.
Non-Resident Enrollment
Students that wish to enroll in our schools, but reside outside of USD 259 boundaries may request a special assignment to enroll as a non-resident student. T he special assignment request forms for these students only need to be approved by the USD 259 school requested. Please note that special assignments are not used to gain acceptance into our magnet schools.

- Magnet Schools Any student (Kg – 12) who prefers the thematic approach to instruction offered by the magnet school programs is eligible to apply regardless of academic ability. The decision to apply for a magnet school program should be driven by the student’s interest in pursuing essential skills through a specific theme or teaching style for learning. Magnet school programs require an application and subsequent random selection process that assures accessibility to all student populations. Local tampa bay news, now’s the time to make special requests for pinellas schools.
Do you want your child to go to a public school other than your zoned school? Now’s the time to act.
PINELLAS COUNTY – The Pinellas School District’s special assignment request period opened Monday (April 4) and runs through April 18. This online application process is for parents who would like their children to attend a non-zoned, non-magnet school for the 2016-2017 school year.
All requests submitted during this initial SAR period are considered equally, using a random selection process. Siblings of students already attending the non-zoned school will be given priority. Parents making requests for more than one child for the same school during this period need to apply separately for each child, but will be able to indicate during the application process that the children are siblings. Special assignment requests are granted three times before the start of the 2016-2017 school year. Parents will be informed whether their application was accepted.

There's Still time to ask for school outside your zone
Parents who would like their children to attend a school other than their zoned school in 2014-15 can make a special assignment request through April 21. They must apply using the Student Reservation System at reservation.pcsb.org. Those without a password and User ID to get into the system can get them by visiting any school in the district. To apply for a special assignment, students — including incoming kindergarteners and other new students — must first be registered at a school. For more information, visit pcsb.org/new or call the district's Student Assignment office at (727) 588-6210.
Eckerd student wins Goldwater scholarship
Colleen O'Brien, an Eckerd College junior, has been awarded the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship, established by Congress in 1986 to support students pursuing careers in science, math and engineering. O'Brien is majoring in marine science and biochemistry. She will spend this summer in Beaufort, N.C., studying how salt marshes respond to sea level rise. After graduation, she plans to pursue graduate work in oceanography and hopes to conduct research in marine biochemistry.
